This thing has gone on for so friggin long it almost makes me gag... If you ignore the trolls they will go away, come on a pay site just to not have to argue with an idiot... who wins? THE IDIOT !! I love R.P. but would I pay for it ( short of the benefits I have played in support of it), Prob. not, and ecspecially if it will be the same as this free version minus an idiot or 2 . This is a forum and there for is open to some strangeness take it at face value and move on.
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood

This subject has touched a nerve...Weighing in on this one, I agree that it would be a bad idea. There are sections on here to "shop talk". And I agree with what's been said about alienating "non-musicians". I play an instrument or two, I write songs and music, I support local music, I am great friends with some local musicians, I buy cds, BUT I'm not in a band. I guess I'd be "out". Too bad for me.
I get on RP to see where bands are playing, to read some local music news, and to possibly become a new fan of some band that I haven't seen or heard yet. I mostly read and rarely post. Lately, RP just helps me realize that there are some bands that I'm not sure I want to support. Yes there are "trolls" but I find it insulting to be lumped in with assholes just because I'm not in a band. I have seen people ruin threads that are musicians. You don't have to be a "troll" to be an asshole. I LOVE music and it's people like me that help "musicians" be able to support themselves or to have an audience doing what they love. I don't get drunk at shows, I don't scream out songs for bands to sing, I don't bitch about paying covers, I don't "search out" bands to become friends with so I can be "cool", and I spend my hard earned money on merchandise from local bands.
So go ahead and pay to talk to each other but remember that it is me who pays to see you.

This is a pretty good quote, too.SavageHeart wrote:You don't have to be a "troll" to be an asshole.
We've all been an asshole at some point in our lives to someone. The problem is when you can't recognize that you've been one.
It's been said here before: This is a community, made up of people with different personalities; different viewpoints on different issues. There will be disagreements, arguments -- sometimes fights. But that's life, not just here on Rockpage.
Do you choose to stay mad at someone who's taken a different angle on topic than you in a debate, or do you respect their right to have a opinion -- even if you feel it's ridiculous -- and remain friends; "neighbors" in a community?
There's nothing wrong with disagreement. It's healthy to have convictions and to defend them. You have to be willing to not take it personally when someone expresses an opinion that differs from yours. You will NEVER agree with anyone 100 percent of the time. That's what makes us people.

Rockpage is a little different than just any other generic online commmunity, because for the most part, we're all local to each other. Many of us have met in person, so there's a lot more personal weight attached to whatever we post. I made it a rule that I won't post anything that I wouldn't say to someone in person. When I type out a post, I'll sit and think, "Okay, would I say this in real life." If there answer is no, I don't hit the submit button (and there have been times that I didn't hit the submit button).
People are going to argue; have disagreements; and yes, a certain contingent of people are going to be downright assholes. I have neighbors that are annoying pricks, but I ignore them and only deal with them when I have to. I finally had a weekend off, so I went out and caught shows on both nights (Friday: The Grimm, Saturday: .00 Buck and The Hurricanes). I must say, we have some of the nicest and most passionate people here in this music community, and they far out number the assholes and pricks.

If you want to have support for the board. Put a paypal link or something of the sort somewhere on each page. Then if someone wants to help support it they can click on the link to help.
Here is a start: http://www.paypal.com/
Also, is the account for this a limited bandwidth account, or a package account ?? is it a shared server or a dedicated server. My forum for example: It's a shared server and I pay 7.00 a month and get 50 gig of bandwidth. I seen packages for a lot more than that for less. Here is a good place to check if you would like to look into that:

Great Post, SavageHeart. The subject of the Thread didn't bother me - whether or not Musicians did so wasn't going to change how I feel about Music, the people I know, et cetera!
The area specifically on RockPage for "Shop Talk", I've never even visited it and don't plan visiting it any time soon. What I found very amusing...nah, better not say.

So...what about us fans that are musicians too? 99.9% of the time I only visit RP to see who is playing where, and this is only the 2nd time that I have ever posted anything, but this subject of "pushing the fans aside and confining them to their own little space", in a manner of speaking,....well....it's just not healthy. The instrument (s) that I play, flute-piccolo-oboe, are ones that you would hardly ever find in a rock band, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the kind of music that other musicians do. Where would a band be without their fans? I don't think that a band would last very long if it didn't have any fans to support them. FAN input can be a very powerful tool to help band members. Not all of us are "trolls". Learn to pick out the comments that can be helpful, and ignore the ones that can lead to disaster.
I am very puzzled as to why anyone would want to make their fans "go away", so to speak. Eventhough we happen to be musicians, haven't we ALL been a fan of someone elses band at one point or another? I am a long time fan of all forms of music, because being able to express thoughts and feelings through music is truly a great gift, and appreciating everyone.....the music makers.....and the music lovers.....is the greatest gift of all.
So, please....if you feel the need to get away from all the mindless clutter, tune it out.....but don't shut yourself off from your loyal followers.....because it can get awful lonely out there without them.

Sounds like
Get a Life? Come on man you posted it. You asked a question and got an answer. I think that the majority speaks well here for themselves.
Never anything personal but don't ask if you aren't willing to accept the public opinion..
Also I don't think that anyone meant to rip on you, as it turns out there are a lot of people on here that are not musicians who contribute a lot to the discussions.

PattyZ, one of the Instruments you mentioned, the Flute, is awesomely utilized by Homer's Army, The Nightcrawlers and when Kent Martin joins in with Felix and The Hurricanes, it's always a treat! He joined them with his Flute Saturday at Burgi's, had his Keyboard along and I gratefully caught a bit of it.

I think some fans are upset that some musicians won't give them full access to everything they do and say, and I say.... tough. I play music for me first, then "fans," and while an audience is a very cool thing, liking my music does not mean you can be in my face all the time. Music is a craft, and sometimes I want to talk with other craftsmen on a professional level, without interference.
I say this over and over and over: You can be the biggest fan ever. You can be married to a musician. You can love music more than anything else in your life. You may have the most beautiful karaoke voice ever. These are all wonderful, admirable things. But until you tread the boards, and pay your dues, you cannot know what we know, or feel what we feel in our hearts. I'm sorry if that leaves you feeling left out. Start a band, play some gigs, dedicate yourself, and even if you suck at it, you will be welcomed as a musician. I promise.
I realize this will get me flamed, and piss some off, but it's how it is. It's why there are bouncers stationed at the backstage entrance at your favorite concert. It's why most pro concert stages are shoulder-high with no steps in front. It's why you have a lock on your bathroom door, for Christs sake (is watching you poop acceptable?).
I love that people like the music I make... it's humbling in a real and continuing way. I feel people's adulation in my heart, and appreciate it immensely, but I like the cameradery of other musicians as well. THAT'S why I come here.
The ONLY reason it's even been suggested to have a seperate area for muso's is because the bad actors here are nearly always "fans" who think they know more than they do, having never actually done what they give advice for. I don't want to alienate fans... I'm friends with lots of fans here, and friendship goes beyond music (one of the few things to do so), so maybe if fans were a bit more understanding of us, we wouldn't need a seperate board. See, sometimes it ain't us.--------->JMS

that was really moving songsmith, i started to tear up

but what does 'uninterupted' mean?
pick any thread. do you muscicians stay on topic? never, not one thread on here. so, a few interested fans posts that are so intolerable because they 'can't know what its like'? its not like you can't skip over a post or two.
you really do feel special dont you?

I dont agree with some of what songsmith wrote - sounds a bit elitist, but whatever, its his opinion.no surrender wrote:that was really moving songsmith, i started to tear up![]()

I dont ever reply to your moronic, rambling, nonsensicle, antagonistic posts or threads no surrender because you are a complete waste of time. Ill go one step further and give you credit for actually being smarter than anyone here gives you credit for. Your smart because you KNOW you can get a rise out of people and its fun for you in some sick, perverted way.
This thread was started because of YOU. I dont believe you are clueless to that fact. I cant imagine getting an orgasm off of knowing people dislike you so much.
Rockpage has become so miserable with flame wars, bickering and trolls that it really isnt much of a music forum anymore. Im sure this wasnt the spirit of which this board was intended and thats a shame. Now that I think about it, the only time I post anymore is to pimp the band or bitch about all the negativity - and its getting old. Sooner or later the members, fans and musicians will get tired of it and will stop coming here. If it hasnt already.
Yeah I pick and chose the threads I want to read - there are precious few of them.
There I threw the troll a bone - Merry F***NG Christmas - choke on it.
heres a quick pimp...........

In an area like ours that the scene has been slowly dyin for years it is probably best to let as many fans that want to post ANYTHING they want so they are not alienated any further than this thread has already done. Besides, look at all the non-music related posts and topics that are started by musicians themselves.
I get on the live audio web board all the time, there are seperate areas for pro's and areas for amitures and novelists as well as questions. There is a rules page that the mediators make the members follow to the letter and it keeps out all the garbage and it is always a usefull place to go.
This forum is a little different, it not only should allow fans to come on here it should be doing more to attract them instead of alienating them. After all as PROFESSIONAL musicians these folks ARE our bread and butter, and if it bothers you taking opinions from the people that you should be considering FANS or future FANS you are only hurting the music in the long run.
Trolls are pathetic but they are funny sometimes and yes, if you ignore them they will go away. But if you want the site to be B.S. free change the rules on the site then follow them to the T.
The live audio board I mentioned above is a national SOUND MAN ONLY sight. If you want a MUSICIAN ONLY sight, thats cool but call it something else and for God's sake DO NOT charge for it.
