Band Hatred!
Band Hatred!
I just read a couple of really good posts about how bands come together for good causes and how band try to support each other.
Most of these posts are from you people in Altoona, in Central PA, and, well, everywhere else but Johnstown.
It seems that, over here, every band just absolutely hates every other band.
Sure, you'll see Johnstown bands come together for a cause, and then mumble about each other behind each other's backs.
Yes, there are a couple of REAL idiots over here who just don't get it and never have.
I was just wondering if it's that way everywhere or just here in the asshole of PA.
Can't we all just get along?!?!

Ive said this before, and Ill say it again. The Harrisburg scene is probably the best scene in Pennsylvania for the excact opposite of why Altoona-Johnstown-Pittsburgh are the worst. Its simple, the Harrisburg bands are all about brotherhood in music, they go to shows when they aren't booked.. just to see their friends and brothers - they respect the fans, they never have a bad word to say about the other bands, and if they do, they say it to the band and that band only. There are crews, but at the end of the day - they're all inter-twined in a sort of way.. Ill give you 2 examples..
BNR - Brand New Rome
consists of bands such as ThrodL (Reading), Subskin (Nanticoke), Kickface, and a few more in the Lehigh Valley/Harrisburg metroplex
- these guys are basically some of the best bands in Central and NE Pennsylvania. Yet they work with absolutely EVERYBODY they can - ThrodL, being one of the best bands in Pennsylvania, period. Their attitude and demeanor is just amazing, they treat everyone with respect, and conduct themselves quite well..
BFL Bands - NE Pa chapter.
these guys are everywhere.. period.
80 Grit Krew - Lebanon/Dauphin county
consists of bands such as Adrenaphine, From Dissension, Lost in the Flood, and From Their Eyes - they also associate with bands like Spinebelt, Anthrophobia, Deamon Dog Sperm, many other bands..
the point is, these 3 associations work together a lot, espically recently between the 80g and BNR. This is what makes a scene great - they bring themselves, and the people with them - this is why a scene can survive - you dont see this too much in the altoona/johnstown/pittsburgh area as far as original music goes.. with exception to the BFL bands that call that area home

Thats great, I know the Harrisburg scene is like that, but I would have to disagree about it being the opposite in Altoona. I think the camraderie among bands is GREAT in Altoona. You live in Palmyra...do you play here too and have experienced this? I have never heard a musician around here badmouth other bands, and EVERYtime I see a band play here are other musicians there supporting them and usually jamming with them. Johnstown and Pittsburgh may have this problem but Altoona definitely doesn't. IMO.The Harrisburg scene is probably the best scene in Pennsylvania for the excact opposite of why Altoona-Johnstown-Pittsburgh are the worst. i may live in Palmyra, but E.o.A is from Huntingdon County - and yes we have played Altoona - they have had good times, but most of time is negativity, now keep in mind - when i say bands, in a way i dont mean bands like hexhed, dragon fire, choking faith, second offense, or 4 days dirty, or any of the bands that are on rockpage - i mean the other bands in the altoona - there is a lot of negativity, but not all of the bands, and not as much as in johnstown..
edit: thinking about it ill give you a few examples without going into too much detail.. one of our friends bands, called The Heartbreak Scene - played at the Lions Den in altoona, about a year back - and they found themselves in a bad situation being an emo band in a hardcore show - basically these kids in altoona, got so fed up of these guys, they decided to throw chairs - pretty much, set ended, and THBS went home..
another example, is the constant cockyness of bands in the altoona area - you want proof? see the post entitled "HARDCORE, METAL, PUNK BANDS..." by Justin Gelvin of The Vengeance of Carl Lee - and go to the message boards for vocal youth - these kids, basically talk trash on absolutely every show in the altoona area and beyond if they're not in it. Normally i dont like mentioning names, but in this case I think it's warranted - an Altoona band, who i wont name, has perhaps one of the cockiest musicians I have ever met in my life - he is a total assbag, and so is his entire band - i did some research to see if they were like that outside of music, and it portrays to life - like you said, Altoona may have some positiveness to it, espically in the circle of bands like second offense, choking faith, dragon fire, and 4 days dirty to name a few - but its almost like altoona has this totally undergroundness to it, that 10 or so bands come out of, and they're all the same..

atomikenrtia,
you are talking about the "underage" fans that go to thje lions den.
I totally disagree with you , i think altoonas band scene is very good and positive. I have yet to hear of a band badmouthing another band in this area. Plus the one band you are talking about carl lee etc?!! i have never even heard of them..... and IMO they must be kids or punks. Though i will add yes there are those "bad apples" in the bunch, But if you sit back and look it is most likely the young,Ego,punk kids.
Some kids these days are just plain ass'. We all know this.

In some cases I would agree to the bands being dicks to each other in J-town.
I know most of the bands in J-town and we do get along rather well. In talking with Chad from Killjingle,Deviance, etc. we felt it is more like a friendly competition with most of us. Everytime Rennis played a show with Deviance we wanted to blow them away and they wanted to blow us away. It made for a better show for both bands. We don't hate each other or anything like that. We see a good band and strive to be better.
I have been in several bands such as Gehenna,Necrotomie,Ozone, and Rennis and every time we played with other local bands it was great.
We always tried to help each other out in any way we could, be it a place to practice, opening slots, helping give out CDs, borrowing equipment or breaking into new venues together. Maybe that is true in some cases but not really with the bands that I have been involved with. The competition level is higher here NOT because there are too many bands, but because there aren't enough fans in the area. Most are college kids from UPJ that want to go dance to the latest shit that MTV has shoved down their throats. Enter the DJ. That is for another post.

THE VENGEANCE OF CARL LEE
www.myspace.com/thevengeanceofcarllee

were not young kids, or punks........
This is why the City,Town,Area CLicks are bullshit.....every musician should get respect for making their own statements through their music

It sounds to me that it's more or less pretentious, trendy scenester-types starting shit rather than bands having egos. That's why I've never attempeted to identify myself with any particular style of music (plus I'm way too damn eclectic to do that anyways).AtoMikEnRtiA wrote: edit: thinking about it ill give you a few examples without going into too much detail.. one of our friends bands, called The Heartbreak Scene - played at the Lions Den in altoona, about a year back - and they found themselves in a bad situation being an emo band in a hardcore show - basically these kids in altoona, got so fed up of these guys, they decided to throw chairs - pretty much, set ended, and THBS went home..
I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I remember everyone I've ever met in this business, and I remember how they treated me. Luckily, my "good" list is a lot longer than my "shit" list. If I don't like somebody, it's pretty obvious. I won't come out and tell them that I don't like them, but I'll be curt with them, VERY CURT!!!!!

"...Rebels without applause..."
Is that from a song? 'Cause if it ain't, it will be, and I'm gonna write it! Anyone who ever played to empty chairs will relate. I love lines like that, with an economy of words, that say a great deal.
A few years ago, during a writing session, we were writing off a sad piano hook, and I wrote, "...Coffee, kitchen table, cigarette..." and it was so descriptive, the rest of the song nearly wrote itself based on that word-picture. It became a song about a woman who'd had a bad night, sat and thought about it, and the new morning came with new hope. All from 4 words. Songwriting can be SO artistically rewarding!------->JMS
