Sometimes the club and band mutually agree on the cover charge, if any. Sometimes the club has a set cover for certain bands or certain nites, and, on occasion, the band can sometimes set the cover.
This is all done for various reasons, so pay your fucking cover and shut the hell up. Supporting live music sometimes has its price.
Why is it that people around here complain about paying a $2 or $3 cover charge to be entertained by a live band for 3 to 4 hours but they don't have a problem about paying $8 for a ticket and $4 for a soda and $4 for popcorn to watch a bad movie for 2 hours?

You cheap bastard
And it is times like this that we need a photoshopped picture of Kelso that says, "BURN!!!!"
Operating a club and playing in a band are two walks of life with high over-head and low profits. You have to make money any way you can. As Bugglez said, shit doesn't come for free. You're either going to have to pay with a cover charge if it's a normal bar or pay with membership dues if it's a club such as a VFW, Moose, etc.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
All cover should be a standard $19.95 this would keep out all the rif raf and cheap NON music lovers who are there just for a chance to act cool in front of chiXX !! and also all cheep skates who know nothing about the way a band survives in such a tight market !
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood
NSwipe is you actually did care one iota about supporting local music you would have NEVER posted a bitch about a lousy $1 cover charge. Like the previos post, $8 is OK for a movie but you bitch to pay to see local musicians playing their asses off.
Starting this topic and what you post truely show you are unworthy to be anyway associated with anyone here.

hey i'm not rich.
as soon as walk in the door someone is right in your face, "That'llBeThreeDollas!" first thot in my head is "FREAK YOU!!!! What a CROCK of *&%$!" i hate everything about a cover. i'm thinkin 'there GOES A freaking beer...'
rest of night i'm in a half-pissed off mood. covers are just bad karma.
on other hand when i hear, 'no cover', i feel great rest of night. at least i don't feel 'violated'
probaby shouldn't feel this way but its hard not to. others agree i talked to.
"no surrender"

UHHHHH one less beer for you = one less drunken moron on the streets!!
IF YOU DONT LIKE PAYING A COVER,THEN GO SEE A DJ!! YOU ARE SOOOO CHEAP... A HOLE 3 DOLLARS IS BREAKING YOU?!!?
C'MON PEOPLE MAKE MINIMUM WAGE AND ARE NOT BITCHING LIKE YOU.
it's intimating to have someone stand right in front of you when you open door 'gimme your money! (or you aint gettin in)!' . i feel like i been mugged. maybe i dont want to stay. maybe i just want one drink. maybe i wont like the band. etc. you know its like this is my fav bar and now i cant go have a drink there because i gotta pay 5 bucks just to get in the joint. i hate everything about covers.
NS you should probably go to Hooters or some Sports Bar or something like that. You might also want to do your drinking on a weeknight, that way you are less likely to have to pay a cover. It seems that you are really on here just to get on peoples shit! I didn't believe that aT first because it is hard for me to imagine someone with so little integrity that they would get on a chat room and rip people anonymously.
I was wrong. I feel bad for you. I will never charge you to get in to see any band I am in. I will pay for you.
I would also like to take this moment to point out that life can be a lot of fun. You don't have to have money, you don't have to have power, you do have to reach out to people in kindness and show them that you care.
With a little warmth and respect you could become a part of this community. You seem to be on here a lot so I can only assume that you want to be on here. Do you want people to dislike you? Or do you not know how to treat people. Has someone done something mean to you? Or do you just feel angry and want to lash out at people you don't know?
If you are "intimidated" by the guys collecting covers around here I cannot imagine how you make it through life. You will earn a lot more respect by trying to see others opinions and try to empathize. A Lot of these bands and performers need this money. Thgis is America and they have that right.
I will also say that you are not the only argumentative type on here but I guess people who like to debate are drawn to this kind of thing. The truth is that you could be more then you are. We all could. Letely it seems that there is a lot of hostility and many of the posts digress into something other then what was intended.
I think that you, NS, should mellow out. But I think that all of you ( everyone else ) over react and feed these things.
So the spirit is that we are all together in this mess that we call society and I personally would feel really good if I could call each and everyone of you friend.
No Surrender I will Pray for you to have this thing lifted and also for you to have your emotional needs fullfilled so that you no longer feel you have to say and do the things that you do on this board that have endeared you so completly to all of us.

I can understand why someone might get a 'lil upset about paying a cover charge just to sit in their favorite bar and drink but what I dont understand is why somebody who is a member of a forum that deals strictly with music, would object to paying a cover charge on "live band" night?
"You" either joined Rockpage because:
1. "you" simply love everything about music.
2. "you're" in a band
3. "you" are a fan of a band on Rockpage
4. "you're" a musician
5. "you're" a "troll" who dont belong!!
If "you" plan on going out to a club, I suggest "you" first: call the place to see if there is a cover charge. Second: find out what the charge is. Then make "your" decision. If its $1, then "you're" in good shape! If its anymore than that.........either pay the fucking thing or go elsewhere!!
If their wouldnt be a cover at the door then some of these bands wouldnt get paid ns cus their are bar owners out their who like to rip bands off and thats not right we all no it happens and so do you if you have a brain one in that hugh mellon you call a head you would understand that. and their should be a cover its only fair unless the band and the owner have an understaning and somtimes that ain't worth crap so my advise to you ns is to let it go and pay the cover or stay the hell home.

i DO call. why do some bars charge $1 and some others $5 for same show? drinks are expensive to.
enedA cover charge covers the cost of the band.
Cheap band ,small place = lower cover.Expensive band = bigger cover.Do you work for free?
No ! and neither do bar owners, bar tenders ,wait-staff , bands Etc...Please understand!Get info about the band before you go out .This will help you avoid confusion. There is plenty of places with no entertainment you can go to.
As far as I'm concerned I pay all covers to support the brothers and sisters entertaining me.GLADLY!
cover charge issue has been covered on rockpage many times in the past, some bars dont want to gamble paying a band say 500 bux and only 20 people show up so they agree with the band to get the door that way the more people the more money the band AND the bar makes, this way the band can do there own advertising to get more people in the bar, some bars advertise on there own which is great for the band who gets free advertising, some bars dont charge ANY cover but they usually cant afford big name bands. either way its a big gamble for everyone because some people dont want to pay a cover if they plan on bar hopping . there is no right or wrong answer to this controversy it has been going on since live music began . you cant make everyone happy so do what works for each bar. If you like a band what is so wrong paying them 2 or 5 bux to support them when you go to the brice jordan center dont you pay 20-100 dollars for bands? come on were not pink floyd but were worth at least a dollar or two! and remember its your choice! if you dont want to pay it go to another bar right?
I'm glad you call first because with the price of drinks, cover charges, and annoying door men, the "trip" out might put a hurting on the wallet with the price of gas!
As far as the price range for cover, I can honestly say....."I dont know!" Ihave never paid less than $3 and more than $7 to get in. Paying more would depend on the entertainment of course.
Ya know, maybe your right.........If cover charge was less, the "draw" of people might increase. But I would say that most of the bands who play these clubs around here get paid by the the amount of people who come in the door and have the option on what to charge.Im sure if the "entertainment" got a percentage of the door plus a certain amount of payment from the club owner, the cover charge could be less. I am willing to try anything to bring the people out to support live music! And oh yea.......A "Hexhed" show is never the "same" show!! hahaha

ya i guess you gotta make it worth your while but you'd ever think of making it up on numbers? NO cover would bring in a lot of people. bar owners wood be happy, and they happy YOU are happy cause they want you back.often.do you ever think it may be a numbers game.

There are places that do not charge a cover. For instance, Beyond Reason played Friday and Saturday night at the Hitching Post and then at Victory Lanes - neither of these bars charge a cover - ever!
So, there are places to go where you don't need to pay the cover charge and still see decent bands. Not to mention, I don't feel that either of these establishments charge too much for drinks - so that is also a plus!!
There are choices out there and personally, I would rather play somewhere that never charges a cover than somewhere where there is a cover and you have to bring your own door guy (I've been the door guy before and it really sucks because you have no authority because you are not an employee - and there are a lot of total assholes that try to start shit with you).
