It is also a biological fact that nearly all primates are omnivorous (eat all kinds of food), a fact that makes us successful at survival, because omnivores can adapt and survive in many environments, due simply to having more opportunities to eat. As mentioned in other threads, we're currently at the top of the food chain... historically, that position changes rather frequently, so enjoy it now. My average meal always includes meat, though as a plowboy, I like my veggies, too (one look at my rather ample frame reveals my ejoyment of all food), and while I like sweets, I'd rather have steak for dinner, and for dessert... more steak.
I see nothing wrong with veganism, although I think it's extremely difficult to get a balanced diet that way. I can tell ya, it ain't for Johnny. My idea of vegetarian is to saute some green peppers and onions in my venison.

Did you ever hear of a condition called Familial Hypercholesteremia?? They have genes that cause them to have very high levels of cholesterol, sometimes a LDL level of 500 is NOT uncommon.
A balanced diet with veggies is reccomended, but only cholesterol medication can at least offer to help these unforunate people live a decent lifespan.
If you know anyone gulping handfuls of medication, please report the overdose to 911 soon.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with red meat. A person needs to know that its laced with fat fibers and act accordingly. Unfortunately, the "better" cuts are the ones that contain the most fat. On the other hand, a pure vegan diet can be extremely hazardous to one's health if its not done properly.

I'd trust the dietitian. Hospital food sucks because it has to take into account patients needs while they are in the hospital. I hated being on a jello diet when I was there after a car-crash, but there was a danger of seizures, and regurgitating solid food could have choked me to death. Also it's a hospital, not a hotel... my wife's a nurse, who hates how people think it's supposed to be easy.
The pharm rep doesn't know diet and nutrition... he knows statin drugs (cholesterol flushers)... I'd believe him, too.
True, cholesterol pills are not a solution. On the other hand, would you deny someone with diabetes an insulin shot because they didn't practice a good diet?

Saute in olive oil, adding the sliced onion and green peppers later so that the onions just barely have time to caramelize and still have a little crunch, slap a big pile of that on a seeded bun or potatoe roll... oh, man, I just drooled.------->JMS

Fish is not a part of a pure vegan diet, but it certainly would provide the necessary protein.
#3 is a proven fact that humans could not have evolved on a purely vegan diet because the protein intake is too inefficient.
