Seems like they kind of follow themes, don't they? There've been a lot of punk and new wave bands going in the last few years, with two more this year.
Well, of course they follow themes, but I think that is mostly due to timing. Think about it...I do believe the artist/band had to have their start 25 (not sure but I think 25) years ago so it is only natural that there will be themes apparent due to the cycle of musical styles. Then they always throw in a few older acts they missed before. I think the R& R HOF is a cool thing, NOT as industry-influenced as the Grammies by a long shot. I did like the format of the RRHOF awards show 5-10 years ago as opposed to now but I still watch it. HATE the grammies. And I do enjoy touring the RRHOF much more than watching the awards show as it is a bit boring sometimes. I fell there are lots of artists/bands who should be in too, but fans are impatient; they will get in and when they get in does not reflect the amount of impact or talent they had...Christ, they only pick 5 or 6 per year.

Kiss? Love them or not, they were arguablyt the biggest rock band ever.

Van Halen? EVH changed guitar. DLR invented a new style for frontmen.

Rush? Yes?

I didn't feel like looking her up, but isn't Bonnie Raitt's Father in "the business", too? She was married to someone in it, as well, I think. Just goes to show, it's "who you know or who you ____." :D She IS talented and worthy, just not now...far too many more so, have been bypassed, most definitely VAN HALEN and I'd even say Kiss.
They both made HUGE impacts! That Rush, Yes and many others belong, those subjects were addressed previously, so I rest.

I still stand by my post, anyone somewhat agree with me? And so many of those artists, while great, are one-hit-wonders and maybe don't belong in a Hall of Fame. Of course, some do, and will be there eventually.

Some that WILL get there, and, agreed, I'm surprised they are not yet:
Steve Miller, KISS, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull (!!), Genesis, Deep Purple, Yes (!!), Alice Cooper, Buffalo Springfield, Carole King, Chicago, DClark5, ELP (!!)
Fairport Convention and Phil Ochs, maybe John Prine belong in a Folk HOF if there is one.

Chic, Cowsills, REO Speedwagon? C'mon moxham!
My dream job would be a musicologist. Too bad I think I am one, huh? Thanks for indulging me...

I think a number of artists on moxham123's list will eventually get in; they do only induct a select number each year, much like the various sports' halls of fame. I think bias on the part of the selection committee does play a role, though.

Much as I think they deserve to be there because of their overall impact on rock and entertainment, I think Hell will probably freeze over before Kiss ever gets included. It's no secret that the Rolling Stone folks (who largely influence the R&R HOF) hate Kiss with a passion; with the recent passage of the anniversaries of the same-day deaths of Freddie Mercury of Queen and Eric Carr of Kiss in 1991, I remember that Rolling Stone gave Freddie's life and career lots of press, but didn't even bother to mention Eric's passing; Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley sent a pretty scathing letter in to the magazine in the aftermath. Then again, the Rolling Stone heirarchy wasn't in Ozzy/Black Sabbath's corner for the longest time, either, and eventually warmed to them.

They've also never liked Grand Funk Railroad.

As for prog-rock geared bands, I think you'll see Yes, Genesis and Rush eventually get in. I think their longevity and overall bodies of work and influence will eventually get recognized. ELP might be in the same boat as Kiss; the Rolling Stone bloc has never been particularly kind to ELP over the years. Same with Styx.

I also think it's just a matter of time before Steve Miller, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Bad Company, and Alice Cooper get in. Van Halen and Def Leppard will probably see their day of inclusion as well.

For a Music Profession Publication, that is obviously such a major influence to behave so biased, is totally UNprofessional, IMO. Maybe their behavior calls for a Boycott? You know, hurt them where it matters most, with "Purchases" and "Subscriptions" and let them know it's until they show respect where respect is deserved. All the e-mails and letters in the world might not do much, but combined, if they know that's the reason sales have dipped, "money talks".

ZXW, I agree with you, for the most part...(Chic, Cowsills, ELP, Yes, etc.) but there's a few slight differences of opinion. :D You're the most Musically learned Chick on here, so if you want to pretend you're a Musicologist, I say go right ahead! :D

Totally disagree....should we ban books too?....its called Freedom of Speech. I personally like RS (mostly for the always superbly-written articles about a wide variety of topics, their writers are top-notch) and to propose boycotting magazines is irrelevent because they are already boycotted (those who don't like the magazine already don't buy it!). I am still not convinced BTW that the RRHOF is so completely influenced by Rolling Stone. RS does not write about older artists these days that often and thats who the awards go to. Not sure how you all have tied these things together.

Not so sure I am, but thank you for the compliment!

Zappaswife,

I agree with you 100%. The list I posted came from lists of "eligible" artists I found on the Internet. They are not all ones I would pick either. I have my persoanl favorites that I feel should have been in long ago and they are the same ones that we all seem to agree upon.

However, We have discovered that the R&R Hall seems to run the gamut of musical styles and they pick artists that those of us in the business question and scratch our heads.

I don't feel that groups like Chic, The Cowsills, and REO are qualified either; but, they are still eligible according to the lists that were posted on the Internet.

I also found this article on one of the sites.

Hall of Fame friar-in-chief Seymour Stein is also the founder of Sire Records, which explains why Sire labelmates the Ramones and Talking Heads got into the Hall on their first ballot.
