Anyone out there use Open G tuning? I clipped my low E string off this morning and tried some "G" riffs after reading some articles about Keith Richards online. I hear now how he created that unique Stones Sound.
"all ya need to play guitar is five strings, two fingers, and one asshole" Keith Richards
I know what your thinking... This guy has one of these requirments
I do. I tune my tele to an open G. I leave all six strings on but Yeah that's Keith and George Thorogood. You end up playing slide or using a lot of suspensions in your chordwork...Basic Stones Rock and roll 101
I tune my lap steel to open G (Well, Dobro G... GBDGBD). No wonder it works well for George Thorogood. I never did the homework and looked up what he plays in. Thanks, Vin.------->JMS
Yep GBDGBD. It's called Nashville Dobro actually. I sometimes use DBDGBD, which is called Nashville Low Bass for the steel guitar crowd... it's basically the same, except you can use the first 2 strings for a root/fifth bass thing. It's good for chording, and steelers seldom use the bottom string anyway. Plus, it doesn't pull the neck so hard, so you can use it without worrying about putting a bow in a nice guitar.---->JMS
I think open G feels too much like standard tuning. I like that Dobro G, I'm gonna have to try that. Open A and D have a really distinct feel to them, they really make me phrase things differently.
