Has anyone seen the new movie about Johnny Cash yet? Tell us your reviews. The other night I watched "Coalminers Daughter" the first time in many years and realized what a GREAT movie that is. A great story of Americana, of people coming from the poorest circumstances imaginable and making it to the top of Country music. And its all true. Only in America.

Just saw it, Good movie to take the wife/girlfirend to. She'll like the love story between Johnny & June and Musician will get a kick out of the "Early days of Sun Records" Scenes. They guy they got to Play Jerry Lee, nails him.

it's a basic, Government issue, one (1), each, bio pic.

The child scenes show that all was not beer & skiddles in the Cash home

I like it when they try to show the writing process, and they do that a couple of times

Phoenix manages to pull of Johnny Cash's mojo without doing an impression of him, he even sings the tunes himself and gives you the spirit of Cash, (I mean really If you want to listen to Johnny Cash, the man has made one or two records.)

After seeing one of these bio pics I usually want to hear the original, sometimes that's a bad thing, like those bad Beatle-bio pics they show on Lifetime, and sometimes it's a good thing, like The Buddy Holly Story. "Walk the line" makes me wanna hear Cash in a good way.

Reese Witherspoon is her usual cute and sassy self, (Way hotter than the real June Carter, even in those days) but the two of them together works pretty well and if that's what the real Johnny saw in the real June, I get it.

The real focus is the love story between Johnny and June. Sorry, no hot nudity, and not really a lot of sex. Lots of music and Johhny being depressed or pissed off, somehow Phoenix makes it all look cool.

There are a couple of scenes that show what bad boys musicians can be, sometimes these can be just not cool but in this flick they work, there is one where June Tells Johnny she's flushed his pills and he tears up the room looking for them, the camera catches a look in Cash's eye....I've seen that look, Good acting, don't be surprised if they are talking about this film in March. round Oscar time

Is this the greatest movie ever made? Nah, but it's good movie to take a chick to, if you're trying to close escrow. In a committed relationship? Wait for the DVD, Send to kids to grammas, Pop some microwave corn and turn the lights down..it's definely worth the rental fee.

A solid and respectable, if unspectacular, 8.0 out of 10

Makes me wanna check out the COWPIE website for Cash songs for the unplugged act!

Maybe I was expecting more of a documentary. I dunno. The reasons I went (besides it being FUCKING CASH) was to see more about the music than a love story.

It still was entertaining to me, but not in a music based movie sort of way. It seemed like it could have been about any guy in a band that was having problems at home while on tour, and was into another woman.

I guess I just need to read some books to get the "Cash story".

FatVin...that is quite the review!! Very professional. Have you done some of this before?

Maybe you could be the Rockpage movie reviewer in residence? (heard the pay's not too good though).

Well, I must say I'm quite flattered at the suggestion but, in truth I get excited about one maybe two movies a year. I just don't have the time or money to go the movies as often as I would like

but hey If you wanna buy the ticket, the soda and the popcorn, I'll review any movie you want.

As to the review, I learned all I know from reading JP over the years and it boils down to 3 simple rules

1. Be thorugh
2. Be truthful but fair
3. Give your readers a number or some other indicater they can hang their hat on.

Just saw the movie and I would reccomend it to anyone who loves music. You get a real glimpse of early rock and roll with Johnny, Elvis and Jerry Lee all touring the country in a couple of cars. Wasn't much more than 3 chords and rockin out to live audiences. If you liked La Bomba and The Buddy Holly story, you will like this also.

I will agree with some earlier posters about this movie being basically a love story. Oh well, guess you can't always escape that, especially when its about a man who wrote some emotional music.

I saw it Friday night and I thought everything about it was amazing. Definitely an awesome movie in my opinion. I highly recommend it.

Aeon Flux always came on after Beavis and Butthead so I only watched about half od an episode before getting bored. The only thing I could think of was how big those animated boobs were. The artist must have been longing for something in his life.

Or like most straight men, he likes boobs..lol...on a side note, most video game vixens have bigger boobs than Aeon did.

And speaking of Aeon Flux (the animation, not the new movie): I really liked the creator's series of Alexander the Great, Reign. It was very awesomely written and drawn. Is "awesomely" a word? Oh well, I'm making it a word.

I didn't see Reign, I'll have to look it up.

I don't believe awesomely is a word but, I have my own version of English anyways. I figure that the language is meant to be one of efficiency (so says a few profs anyways) so words should be allowed to be made up to increase this. Hell, on that note, if ebonics and spanglish are considered I see no reason that there cannot be others.

Punkinhead, definatley check out Reign. You won't be dissappointed. It may take a while to get over the homo-erotic animation (but as a straight guy, I can say that the characters are beautifully drawn), but once you do, you'll see how brilliant the series is.

And I like the idea of language being efficient. A few friends and I are trying to get a made up word, scallowed, into the general lexicon on the English language. It may take a while to catch on, though.

If it's close I must go see it.

Tonight it's "The Devil's Rejects" on DVD... for the second time.

I prefer the "ung" language.

"Ebonics?" "Spanglish?" How about Schuylkill County's "Coalspeak"? Many of the words I've heard spoken in Central PA, too. I even have a "Dictionary" for it from A to Z. It's a riot!
An example is the word "filem". "I
hafta get more filem for my camra."

Three Coalspeak words were
used in that sentence!
