You REALLY like "That '70s Show", don't you? I happened to catch that episode too.
I give all the appreciation and respect to the bands that are talented in all aspects! There ARE bands in this area that are definitely extraordinaire in their abilities including the guitarists, drummers, singers, keyboards and so on! Bands that work so well together that they just ROCK! For instance HairForce1 just to name one! I have not had the chance to see EVERY live band that has passed through here, but I can say that I have seen many!
As DJ's, we would give up any night of "just push play", and go see HF1 why? Because out of the majority of bands that I get to go see, they are GOD's at the live scene in this area! And I think that there is OTHER bands that might even agree with me!
As far as the bands that I have not had the opportunity to see live yet, I am straight up guaranteed to see other extraordinary talent in each of them as well! As far as bands just trying to get it together, Yea! It’s a long hard road being a musician/performer/entertainer and maybe just starting out some of these bands are "just not well put together yet", but they're working on it! Maybe just maybe, my first impression seeing them for the first time is, Gee, three of four guys are excellent but the other guy really sucks! I keep my opinions to myself, then maybe 3 months down the road, that band trades him in because THEY didn’t think he was that great either! Maybe I see high energy out of 3 guys in a band and not the fourth! In all fairness, just because a musician just "stands there to play" DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE ISN’T TALENTED"! It just means (to me) that I enjoy a band like HF1 that’s excellent musicians, great looking guys, but they also are "entertaining". Please don't say that you don't know what I'm talking about! I saw a band that I thought was great! They had everything it takes; I saw one thing that (I thought) was missing, THE LEATHER PANTS. It was trivial; the band was great with out the clothes! The singer was the bomb, great looking and for the music they were playing I could picture him and the rest of the band looking the part just to add eye candy!
After years of being in this town, trying to point out to a new band what their possible inside competition is and telling them what I see that they might be missing, might just be the one thing that someone else didn't think of! Or doesn't my advice count because I don't play an instrument?
The ONLY ones that I am critical about, (and it has never been an entire band) is individual members of a band that just don't (in plain words), have what it takes to impress anyone! I can't believe that so many musicians on Rock Pages took offense and was insulted about me speaking real and straight up. Not once did I direct my opinions or words to any one particular band or band member, I wouldn't do that, and definitely not on here. That's called "respect". I really wish that everyone would just back off about the DJ thing. Just because it was a DJ that asked a stupid question or presented an idea or posted an opinion it jacked every body up! Again, I will say it, there is not a place in this area that WE personally have tried to over step a band! There is not one place that WE play at that would be even worth it for a live band to play at! And again, WE do not play Karaoke! But truth is, I have been to Karaoke and have heard some remarkable voices that SHOULD be in a band! Just once, I would like to have someone just listen to what our ideas are and respect it as even a possibility. Maybe just maybe we are not as stupid as some would like to make us out to be! I know talent when I see it! Just like I know who has potential and who is feeling the music when they are playing it and who isn’t. Again! I apologize to any innocent bystander that was insulted or took offense to me being real! If you are good, you're good! No offense would of been taken if it would of NOT been said by peon DJ's! To all the bands that know they are good and have the followers to back them up, just because we are DJ's does not mean that we are not one of your followers too! Doesn't that deserve a touch of respect? If you have been in business for years, then obviously you have been doing something right! The only DJ that I know of that takes up any space of a live band is DJ BATMAN! And he brings in quite a large crowd and profit! Hopefully I will see some band members at his show just to enjoy themselves too and not be so hostile about a DJ and a room full of people having a good time! It is too bad that DJ’s can compliment other DJ’s and band members can compliment other band members and a DJ can compliment a band, so why is it so hard for a band to compliment a non-musician?

If I happen to go anywhere Friday night, it will NOT be to HEAR a frickin' dj from "the Shore". (Sorry Claudio!) You've GOT to be kidding me!!! If I want to groove to "don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me...don't cha...
don't cha...", what ever tf the title is, I'll wait to hear it on the radio...I listen to all kinds of Music!
Jeez, Gazoo, why didn't you say that in the first place? Like I said... I don't think DJ's shouldn't exist... they fill needs we can't, and they keep us hungry and sharp. Karaoke is different, for me at least. You have to sit through 2 hours of crap to hear one decent singer, and when people suck, they blame it on the booze, and that's NOT a musician. We blame everything else on the booze, but not that!
My early point was simply that we compete as businesses, and like any competing businesses, there's room for politeness, but not a whole lot more. That said, for many, there's not even room for that! Battle lines were drawn about 20 years ago around here, and there's not much I can do to stop that.
I myself have spun records in clandestine teenage booze/makeout parties on two home stereo's, and have spun records on 5000 watt giant systems for a thousand people (for Rilco Disco, back in the day), but it pales compared to playing exactly the right note in exactly the perfect tone onstage with the Hurricanes in front of a few people. BTW, notice I said, "spun records." That's how long ago it was!
If you ever aspired to be a musician, that can always happen. I used to sell almost as many lessons to adults as to kids... many music students are empty-nest moms fulfilling a dream.------>JMS

gazoo, have you ever thot about dropping projector screens from the ceiling playing ROCK VIDEOS with the tune? That be real cool.. very psychadelic like effect with that and the LASERS! think about it! be cool to see the original bands while we rock to the tunes!
Thats a great idea. Its somthing we've been working on.It's that tight money season! lol and not sure exactly where in this town to fit that idea in? and I never forget i'm in altoona lol
I have an idea - why not start your own forum "DJpage" and leave Rockpage to the musicians. I'm not trying to be cruel, but let's face it - this is a forum for musicians, right?
I personally don't like DJ's because anytime I hear one they seem to only want to play (c)rap music and I can't tolerate that stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love that DJ's attract the young hard bodies and they are fun to watch, but generally the music mix sucks.
It is like the Night Spot Report on Q94. I always like to hear who is playing where and what is going on, but lately it seems like there are less and less bands on the report and more and more DJ's and Wing Night specials. I realize that Q94 sells those slots to whomever pays for the advertising, but it just seems sad to me. (Sorry JP, this was not a slam on you or Q94!!)
Anyway, why not start your own forum. I doubt it would be as successful as Rockpage because I really doubt DJ's would be nearly as supportive of each other as members of Rockpage are of each other - but it is worth a try.

Is Rockpage really for "Musicians Only"? I am really not big on exclusion of people. I thought that RockPage was for people who liked and appreciated music.
I would hate to think that this is all about excluding people expecially when Music is really all about bringing people together regardless of their race, politics, religion or sexual preference. (we need more lesbians) I like to hear what other people have to say, I might not agree with them, but I still want to be aware of it and give it merit. Tom I never pictured you as someone who would want to exclude most people from this forum. Most people who love music are not musicians.
I love the exchange of thought and attitudes and I love the disputes. I love hearing people and then meeting them later on. I think that it keeps me sharp and open to new ideas.
I like being able to have people rag on me and then meeting them somewhere and finding out that we are not that different after all. I am still trying to get to a "Bad Daze" show so I can buy those boys a beer. I might not agree with everything thats posted but this is above all else,
"One Nation unger God
Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice
For ALL"
And agree with you or not I will die fighting for your right to piss me off.
And one other thing, everyone who posts here is a memebr so let's support them.

I didn't mean to imply that Rockpage was for musicians only. Obviously some of the most important members of this forum are the fans.
I just always thought that Rockpage was geared towards live music. Maybe I am wrong about that. And if Rockpage is truly about all music including bands, djs, kareoke (however it is spelled) then I apologize.
I honestly didn't think it was a completely bad idea when I first read the original post. I had a couple a friends that DJ'd about 15 years ago and they played for some club (might have been the Ramada in Richland) and they opened for bands, ran the lights and DJ'd during the bands breaks. It seemed to work well for them at the time. And, the couple times I was there with them, they had a great crowd.
Anyway, like I said originally, I wasn't trying to be cruel by saying they should start their own forum - it might be something they want to look into. There are forums for just about every subject under the sun, why not one for DJ's?

Now with that I agree! In the meantime I say we embrace everyone who has an interest, maybe Gazoo could come to a Beyond Reason show and hang for a little while. Come check it out Gazoo these guys do a great set!
Also during the "One Voice" showcases we are playing CD's from local artists, but it is a CD.
I just think that if we love music and work together we will be stronger and better for it.
I knew that post didn't sound like you Tom and your reply proves it!
Happy Thanksgiving all! And remember that at least we have the right to choose what we go and see! Ain't America beautiful!

I agree! a DJ Forum would be nice! There are a few sites that have DJ chat but it's just not quite the same. I believe that Rock Pages was set up for bands and musicians and fans, which we are fans of live music, but I guess we entered this site the wrong way!
When we started to DJ, our choice was Classic Rock, Rock and Metal, eventually it was inevitable that we play the rap and hiphop because that's what the ladies requested to dance to! We found that alot of people appriciated us bringing them the music and songs that they haven't heard for a while.
I want to get out more and go to the live bans gigs. I feel honored to have a band actually "invite" us to come see them! We don't go to judge anyone, we just go to get drunk and have a good time!
I'm comin' out of the closet I've been a DJ for 4-5 years now and I've been running karaoke for at least 2 years on Tuesdays. I'll never be able to put into words how much I miss playing in a band. My $11,000. drum rig has been sitting in a garage for over a year and a half. I'm lucky if I get to play my guitar a couple of times a month.

in my life and it wasn't my decision. You're a "part-time" dj...and a FULL TIME Musician at HEART, where it counts!
I call you "Red Ryder" - "Look at me, I'm, a ridin' side saddle"... Although it's been a while, I recall you bangin' on the skins at the 'Post..."WHOO HOO"! Especially on "Black Magic Woman", aye Carumba!!! Don't let 'em keep you down, ROCK ON!

I'm ALL FOR IT! ANYTHING that pisses people off (Especially musicians) probably is a good idea. I thought of maybe, 5 or 6 very marketable ideas just typing this up right now.
There is ALWAYS going to be competition, bad bands, crappy DJ’s etc. let the closed minded argue amongst themselves. I’m always looking for new, interesting and unique ways to do what ever it is I do. If you are interested, give me a call and we can discuss the details.
I had an AWSOME time at Peter C's Yankee Rose That was one of the two times I got to set my drum kit up and play them last year. I've been trying to make a Sunday at The Hitching Post for weeks now. Hopefully next weekend.
gazoo17 wrote: Again, just because someone says that they can play an instrument or claims to be in a band, also does not mean that they are "good" and should actually be a part of a live scence.
To many bands in our area alone, go on stage, stand there and play and have nothing to offer by way of entertainment. That's where I come in, I feel I have the natural ability to bring out what alot of these bands are missing in regards to doing a live show.
This is what got the thread going, atleast for me. A DJ saying this on a musician board wasn't wise. I did apologize for my nasty post but we can sort this out. There are bands just starting out and learning the ropes but most of us on here have been in the biz for years and that was a cutdown to us. Im just glad you didnt mention the actual band names you were refering too. .
I’m defiantly a musician and I agree with the DJ statement 110% !!!They said nothing derogatory or demeaned any particular band or musician in any way! It's just an opinion....that I happen to agree with! And I'll go as far as to say it's an educated opinion; I'm positive they spend more time in clubs than most of the "so-called" musicians that are complaining!
I don't see the big deal here. You go out to hear a band. You go out to hear a Dj. Both play music to make a living. Both play music because they love music. But decide what kind of music genre to play either what they like or what they know the crowd will dance to. They both plug into speakers. The exception is that one sings/waves their arms to make noise, the other pushes buttons to make noise.
Unless you are a full original band, then both play covers songs.
So why is it so hard for people to get along? Don't get me wrong. I love going out and hearing the bands. That makes my night. I think it's cool to see them sweat and put their hearts into their tunes and give props to the original creators by doing their own renditions. But at the same point in time, I want to go to a club and shake my ass to "the best of today's" tunes. Lights blaring. Chicks dancing. Rave it up if you will.
So, my question is: Why are so many musicians at arms because of Dj's. Y'all are both makin' a living at music, just with different machines. So clubs just aren't big enough to have bands. Maybe and accustic solo/duo act...but... As long as their are clubs, there will be bands. As long as their are clubs, there will be Dj's. It's time everyone got along. Neither of you will put the other out of business.
Oh, and it was nice to meet you Robbin.
