The only DJ that should get respect or even be allowed out there are those who make thier own music. I'm talking about mixing beats, scratching, and stuff like that. I own two turntables. This about the hardest instrument to master. I play guitar, bass guitar, and drums and I can honestly say that turntables are hard to make music on. However, if your just playing cd's I agree with everyone else on the forum.

I wanted to throw my 2 cents into the mix, but I had to get to class.

As I said earlier in this thread, I can be a fuctionalist, and DJs do serve their purpose. I was at a very small wedding a few years ago where the couple hired a DJ, and it was a smart move to hire one. Business is business, as has been stated before, and obviously the DJs are fulfilling a demand in the entertainment market. Also, to be a "good" DJ (whatever "good" is suppose to mean), he or she needs personality, the same way a good frontperson needs personality. I don't care if a club runs DJs/Kareokes on the weekdays, because that's money the owner is making to keep his or her establishment open, the same establishment I'm going to be playing at come Saturday night.

But, I've never gone to a club with the intention of seing a DJ, nor would I ever go to a club in order to see a DJ. When I go to a club, 99% of the time it's to see a band. It's true that a band can't play all of the material that a DJ can, but that's the trade-off: Instead of being able to hear every asinine drunken request, you get to watch people actually physically create sound. The musicial experience is not passive, and that should be even more true when experiencing live music. Robin, I have no idea what your personal history is like, but "not having the chance to be a musician" sounds like an excuse. When I want to do something, I figure out the best course of action, and I just do it. Yes, being a musician requires years of sacrifice, and sometimes it's as painful as a kick in the teeth. But you have to make the decision to do something. I take that approach with everything in my life. Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as "holier than thou," but I'm pretty much self-made in terms of what I've accomplished in life (with help from others of course, but I was never handed anything without a lot of work), so I kind of get irked when people say that they just couldn't do something.

And I agree with Matt: I love electronic music, and consider the individuals who make it to be very creative, some of them are even more creative than a lot of "real" musicians I've heard.

Sorry Robin, your swimming with the sharks in here. I was a bit harsh on ya and i apologize, but i pride myself on being a big asshole on Rockpage  Any RP'er can verify that. :P

Speaking of Dj's, Phil Claar has a nice setup with the video. One night i caught him and he played vids from the old metal days. Stuff i hadnt heard and seen in years. Twas pretty cool.

First off, let me say that DJs don't threaten me (unless they catch me messing around with their wife or something). Live music has survived everything from the player piano to the jukebox to MTV. If anything, they are keeping alive the tradition of the radio DJs who could play what their listeners wanted to hear, rather than cookie-cutter programming piped in from corporate.

Having said that, here are two practical reasons why having a DJ open for a band probably isn't a good idea:

1) Bands usually already have a DJ. In many cases, the guy who owns and/or operates the sound and lights is also a DJ, because that system can still make money when the band isn't playing. Plus, the band is responsible for providing bumper music before they play and between sets, so it's common for the sound guy to have many gigabytes worth of tunes ready to cue up.

2) Bar owners would throw a fit. Most clubs don't like opening bands, so having an opening DJ would be even less popular. They like to get their full three sets worth from the headliners. My fear is that if a band had a DJ open for them, the club would think they were the laziest band on Earth. "Can you believe what Band X did last week? They only played two sets, and just played CDs for the other hour!?! WTF?"

i have been djin off and on for about 5 years. and i still like goin out and seeing a live band compared to goin to see another dj. BTW I PLAY LOCAL MUSIC FROM BANDS SUCH AS SKELL, PIVOT,LOST LEDNEY,AND WOULD BE HAPPY TO PLAY MORE!!! MY THEORY IS PEOPLE HEAR THE SAME CRAP EVERY WEEKEND SO Y NOT GIVE A LOCAL BAND SOME EXPOSURE TO A CROWD THAT PROB. WILL NEVER GO TO A SHOW, OR BETTER YET LIKE WHAT THEY HEAR AND SHOW UP TO SEE SOME OF YOU GUYS ON HERE!!! DJ'S DO SUCK

OK, how about a 180 on another idea. I do a rock solo act from the 60s thru 00s and play lead guitar and vocals (not midi programmed instrument solos like some of the acoustic players I've seen--puke my guts out). How about I play some special guest sets at your shows?

All I'd need is a stereo channel on your mixer. I have a midi programmed light system that runs with the music.

No surprise here! No surbrainder is all excited about going to go see a dj. Take all of n.s. posts about really feeling music and shove him(or is it a her) into the crap pile. No one who is passionate about music could ever get worked up over a pukin dj.

UCJoe, a breakthrough - you hit the nail on the head! On any given night, if a person would pick going to a place that has a dj over going to see, hear and "feel" LIVE Music (That's Music being played by Musicians.) somewhere, there's no way I'd ever believe that person could possibly be the slightest bit passionate about Music, or that they in any way support, believe in or stand behind those in their local Music scene. I'd have to say that would make them an 80 percenter. :)

Lonewolf?

Thanks for the kind words! In reply to your post, We would love to work with your ideas BUT, we have already been kicked and puked on in here just for having ideas! A DJ is just a joke to a musician! If you're good at what you do, I would hate to have you plug into our PA system and be kicked and puked on for associating with any thing that resembles a DJ! I do believe that being lead and vocals and plugging into us would make you look bad in front of members of Rock Pages and get you on their shit list too! I sincerely do not want to see that happen to someone with a flair for creativity! Being a DJ is NOT a bad thing, that's who ends up playing live bands recordings on the air so that when the band is not in town for a concert, they can either hear it on the radio or even on a cd! So what's so bad about being a DJ and playing the music for their fans? Isn't that what a live bands goal would be? To have a recording contract and put out CD's and have people appreciate them for all their hard work? And, keep them alive even when they are not playing live? I guess some people just don't know how to take a compliment! I am sorry! I didn't realize that so many "musicians" were so hostile to pathetic little dj's like us! They make it sound like we are making thousands of dollars in this town and trying to hone in on their spot light or something like it would even happen anyway! Yea, we do the small shit that a band is too big for or too talented to waste time on! Who would of thought that making an offer to bring something together for a benefit or something would cause such a war? You look like you are confident not cocky! you sound sincere and not self-centered, and we basically had the same idea as you and wanted to pull something like that off, and I know a great time and place for something that off the wall to take place, but like I said before, you would be downgrading yourself to even be associated with us. Members of Rock Pages would hang you and prosecute us for even trying it! But then again! I'm free, white and way over 21! I don't back down just because someone has tagged us as the DJ's from hell! We know that we are small beans standing beside a band, were not stupid! I really don't know what their point was by trying to beat us into the ground when we are not even close to being on their same level, but I guess they felt to need to bash the little guy! If that's what happens to their personalities and attitudes after they get big in Altoona, then I truly want to remain the small fry! I'm sure with all the chaos on here, you have our email by now, if not, Dragondreams41@hotmail.com and we can chat about ideas that others have no interest in. \

Sincerely, Lady Rock!

To many bands in our area alone, go on stage, stand there and play and have nothing to offer by way of entertainment. That's where I come in, I feel I have the natural ability to bring out what alot of these bands are missing in regards to doing a live show.
This is what got the thread going, atleast for me. A DJ saying this on a musician board wasn't wise. I did apologize for my nasty post but we can sort this out. There are bands just starting out and learning the ropes but most of us on here have been in the biz for years and that was a cutdown to us. Im just glad you didnt mention the actual band names you were refering too. :P

But good luck with your new projects.

I do not want to flame any fire but I feel that I have to point out a big misconception. The dj who started this thread said that he is not in competition with any local bands.

Every time a dj or japanese singing contraption is paid for by a bar owner, that is one more bar that is NOT paying a LOCAL BAND. For instance, some local bars have totally given up live bands for kareoke every night (Petey"s Bar, the place I first saw one of the best local bands, The Flame Sky).

Do you know that there is a waiting list to get guitar lessons at Emporium Music? There are lots of high school and jr. high kids practicing hours every day on guitar, bass, drums and keys. If all the bars find it cheaper to pay a dj or kareoke guy, where will the next generation of REAL musicians ever get a chance to show thier stuff.

So mr. dj, you are competing with the musicains on this rockpage, and all the musicians in training.

Ask an older musician from the 70's about the local music scene. I have been told that they could easily play 5 or 6 gigs every week. Now its hare for most bands to get 1 or 2 a week. What has changed, dj, and k.

Strip Clubs

Post by tornandfrayed »

I like strip clubs too because I really like womens breasts! You can ask my wife she will vouch for me.

As far as the DJ thing goes there is a time and a place for a DJ and I don't see a problem with a DJ posting here, I mean you guys are all great musicians and you have been doing this for a long time. I don't perceive DJ's as a threat to any of you.

Be wary of what you post and how you respond because we are really all after the same thing.
