Steve Courson R.I.P.

Post by Jim Price »

Former Steelers offensive lineman Steve Courson died on Thursday after a tree fell on him at his Fayette County home. He was 50.

Here is a link to the story:

I'm sure a few Rockpagers may remember, Steve made several visits to the Altoona area in the past several years. He visited Pellegrine's for a few Monday night games (when the Steelers were playing), and would bring his Steeler memorabilia along and autograph photos for fans.

Wasn't Courson one of the first football players to come out and admit using steroids?? And didn't he have some health problems related to it??

Yes, it's in the article that the link above goes to. Steve admitted to using steroids in 1985, which he believes led to his heart problems later on in life. Steve eventually became a strong opponent of steroid use, and gave speeches to young athletes in schools about the evils of steroid use.

I must relate a story regarding the last time Steve Courson visited Pellegrine's. It was two seasons ago (the Steelers' last losing season, before Ben entered the picture), for a Monday night game, I believe against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars wound up winning the game rather handily, and the Jags fans at Pellegrine's were taunting and yelling abuse in Steve Courson's direction. He kept his cool, but for him and other Steelers fans in the house, the night hadn't been going well. Steve still autographed photographs for fans, and had his glass display case of Steelers memorabilia with him for people to look at. Steve was getting ready to leave, and was at Pelly's main bar, when somebody on the other side of the bar called to him. Before going to speak with that person, Steve propped his glass display case on the corner of the bar (next to where the Jager machine is). Two friends and I were sitting two tables away and eating wings, when we suddenly heard a loud CRASH!!! We looked over, and Steve's display case had fallen off the corner of the bar and shattered on the floor. A very dejected Steve Courson and Pelly's main man Harry Jr. picked up the pieces of Steve's shattered case and memorabilia, and Steve dejectedly trudged out the door of Pellegrine's and into the night. That was the last time he had visited Pellegrine's...and it didn't end on a good note.

Man JP...for some reason that strikes me in some kind of sad way...

Steve just came and spoke at the school I teach in about two weeks ago. He talked about a healthy lifestyle. The kids were really into what he had to say and I thought he did a great job presenting. I got to meet him and eat lunch with him and he was a really nice person. Steve had tons of interesting stories that you couldn't even imagine.
