pissing off other bands (by accident...)

Post by Bloodsong »

did you ever tell a band you just saw they sound like a band you really admire, but they really hate? i saw a great band recently (i'm not mentioning their name) and told them they sounded alot like motorhead, whom i love to death. the guy looked at me like he wanted to punch me in the face, and told me emphatically that they "don't sound like fu--ing motorhead." i felt bad, but it was kind of funny.

Something a little different but about the same thing is after a show telling a guitar player or bass player that they remind you of so and so player thay you really like. Then the give you that look and say they don't sound anything like that (when they really do).

Some of the times I have compared a musician to a really well known and greatly respected artist, and I am left wondering why the musician would feel slighted or insulted. Go figure some people, but there are some artists who can be touchy about thier art, even when you are giving them a compliment.

Yeah, some people take a lot of offense to that, so I'm usually hesitant to make comparisons to national acts. Though it's probaly the easiest to describe a band's sound by doing so.

That guy is a fu--ing asshole and doesn't deserve your respect, let alone bad feelings.

You should have punched him in the face. Anybody that is in a band and acts like that needs to be knocked down a peg or two. He should just be happy that you didn't walk up and tell him that they sucked.

We are all influenced by other groups/artists. You shouldn't take too
much offense by a comment (or at times compliment) that a fan or
other musician makes toward you related to another musician/group.
Most styles I've experienced (or seen) are a combination of others, and rarely does anyone develop there own unique style without some discernable influence if you really investigate it.

Take it with a grain of salt and move on, you'll be happier in the long run!

Musicians have to learn to accept criticism/compliments, that's part of the business. Music is a journey where you never quit learning, and part of learning is accepting or changing.

I feel that comparisons are compliments. And if it is a well known (talented) artist, you should be able to say "thanks" and continue on.

If someone comes up to me after a show and they say that my band sounded like some other well known band and I disagree, I usually ask them what made them think that. Maybe I'm weird, but I like to talk to people about music.

Vic's theory is that girls dig guys who look like girls. And he's right. So I meant it as a compliment. 8)

That's not as bad as playing Jonny Cash, Elvis, Hank Sr, all with an acoustic giutar and standup bass and having people come up and ask for AC/DC!

It would rule if you'd play some Hayseed Dixie.

Hey Jimi Hatt....
I'm listening to Hayseed Dixie right now.
Let's start a band that covers others covers??? That's not in the ten commandments right? You can covet another's covers???
I can't do much, but if we get some guy w/ a chew in, a banjo & you can play guitar....I can laugh & do lighting or tell bad jokes or something.

Q: What did one strawberry say to the other strawberry?
A: If you weren't so fresh, we wouldn't be in this jam!!!

Q: What's the best band in the world?
A: Strawberry Hatt (hahaha instead of Raspberry Beret!) :~)

Just ring 3624368....
