Joining a band?

Post by DiMeFan4Life »

yea i was wondering how this works .... lets say someone was looking to join a band and the band has like 35 covers ..do they expect a guitarist that joins a band to learn the songs quickly or to jump right in the ring and know them .... how can you possibly learn how to play 35 covers quickly.it woulld take days even months ..i dunno i was just wondering about this ive never been in a band before i have alot of original stuff written on the guitar aswell as vocals.i dont know many covers tho i guess i just need to practice .well later :P

Learning that many songs that quick may seem unreasonable. But i know that i couldn't do that anyways. We are mostly in to our originals then anything. But then again we have gone through alot of people trying to join us. It is really hard. To find people.

I once learned 3 sets worth of covers in 2 weeks, went to a few practices played a show with me doing 1/2 the night and the guitar player that was leaving doing 1/2 the night . I went to the next practice and the original members got in a big money discussion and decided to call it quits.

But in general if you are joining a band the situation will decide how long you have to learn the songs, you may be expected to learn all the material very quikly.

When I joined Bad daZe they gave me set list of about 45 songs, I learned about 40 of them in about two and a half weeks time. Not to mention with only two practices before my first show with them. Nothing is impossible. When you say "you can't" then you won't.

You know Redneck is right. You gotta believe that you can do it. Or you are just sitting yourself up for failure. Have faith in yourself because anything is possible.

I also learned three sets of material in about two weeks. It's just something that comes with time. As you become more experienced, it's easier to pick stuff out, especially intervals. I'll listen to a song on the radio and say, "Hey, there's a tritone right there or a b7". Freelance musicians make their living by being able to pick songs up on the fly. Also, a lot of musical forms are very similar, such as a 12 bar pattern or the old I-vi-IV-V pattern that use to be in a lot of ballads (and is still used in modern music). I have a lot of stuff to say about this, but I have to get to class, so maybe I'll post some more. :D

2 WEEKS

Post by Jacklyn Miauff »

I would say that 2 weeks sounds about right. I am pretty sure that is what it took my husband when he joined Hair Force One. I would also say that it depends on the individual person. Some people take longer to learn than others do.

It also helps if you've heard the music before. I had a general idea of what Bad Daze did before I played with them for a summer, and the same thing with HF1. The only thing I really had to suss out was the endings for songs, and with Bad Daze, I had to learn the "Motley Crue Medley From Hell That Randy Won't Let Me Play Anymore" LOL!!.

Side note, thanks a lot, BadDazeRob, you bastard. Ever since I've played that medley, I've really had to struggle playing Crue covers with other bands. Simply put, I'm still not used to playing any of those songs all the way through!!!! :D :D :D :D

:) Bit'chen, you made me LOL again! I'm waiting for the day the novelty of "American Pie" wears off...of course, the novelty of Looney Toons hasn't faded for me! BDRob, I know what OTFLMMFAO means, "on the floor, laughing my mother f-ing ass off", right? What does FOMCRA stand for? R is most likely rolling, I realize that, but the rest?

Just like someone else had said, the band your filling in for/joining/replacing a member for will dictate the situation.

I remember doing an audition at a group's gig in front of a packed house one nite. Talk about pressure. I got the gig and was given three weeks to learn the list.
