GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME!!

Post by ToonaRockGuy »

Okay, since I just got done surfing Neil Peart's Official website, I thought I'd post some questions for the drummers here on Rockpage. Opinions are going to vary, so be gentle with each other. I'm curious to know the following, in your opinions:

1. List your Top 3 favorite drummers of all time. (3 ONLY, please)

2. Who's the most over-rated drummer of all time?

3. Who's the most under-rated drummer of all time?

4. What national drummer(s) do you enjoy watching most?

5. What local drummer(s) do you enjoy watching most?

6. What's your favorite song to play on drums?

7. What drummer made you want to play drums?

Looking forward to the responses!!! Non-drummers are welcome to answer the questions, too.

Good Thread Kevin

1. Top three
Bill Bruford
Buddy Rich
Ringo

2. Over rated
Keith Moon

3. Under rated
Ringo

4. Fave National
Weckl
Neil Peart
Jeff Hamilton
Thomas Lang

5. Local drummers
[In no order]
Rob Bonnsel
Bobby Waters
Kevin
Johnny McKnight
Dom
Aaron Kimmel
EVERY Local Drummer has to be good to play around here. They're
all good !

6. Favorite to play
Too many, but I'll try.
Yes did a cover of Simon and Garfunkle's "America". We did it in an old
band called Skye. Great fun to play !
Like Rob, what ever song I'm playing right now.

7. Who made me play ?
When I was about 7 or 8 I had to choose an instrument. I said guitar.
This was about 1962. My dad said the electric guitar was a fad, I had
to pick something else. I picked the Drums. (My dad was also a
drummer).

Then after a long layoff , Shawn motivated me to get back to playing.

Nick Barker, Gene Hoglan and Chris Adler all kick so much ass. they are metal drummers...but, holy shit...all three of 'em.

Lars Ulrich is pretty damn overrated...also so is that jackass from Blink 182 travis barker.

As far as local drummers...ive only seen a couple. Kevin and John(thrashkillsyou) both impress me. Robthedrummer ive only heard and he sounds kickass.
Drums are so very important.

7. Who Inspired Me...

I really never had anyone to inspire me. Playing on the dinner table with knifes , forks and spoons I drove my mom crazy... I always loved music and the thunder of drums. I'm self taught and regreting it at the same time.
Anyone that whats to play anything, do it right take lessons.....
Speaking of thunder I use to get some 30 gal.and 55 gal. oil drums and turn them upside down in tuned order and a cut nice size branches off trees and start going at it, waking up the neighborhood.
Now that was Thunder.... lol Go on, have FUN and just play...

I cannot rate drummers cause I don't know enough to even try, but when I went to see Gov't Mule in Pittsburgh 2 years ago, Matt Abs blew me away. i don't think I ever came away form a show so amazed by a drummer, even though I was trying to figure what Warren Haynes was playing all nite.

Tough questions to answer and my answer are likely to change tomorrow but here goes:

1. Top 3: Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Tony Williams

2. most over-rated: MIKE PORTNOY, Neil Peart, Lars Ulrich

3. most under-rated: Alex Van Halen, Rod Morgenstein, Gregg Bissonette

4. national drummer: Thomas Lang, Steve Smith, Vinne Colaiuta, Charlie Benante...

5. local drummer(s): I haven't seen everyone mentioned above so I'm bound to omit some hot local drummer but here goes - Rob Bonsell, Aaron Kimmel, Shawn and Bill Hocherl, Bobby Waters, Ron Brode, Andrew Jackson, Dave Throckmorton (Pgh)...

6. What's your favorite song to play on drums? I don't play many covers (that's probably why I can't find gigs all that often) but Take Five by Dave Brubeck, La Villa - Rush (I butchehred this once live), Frenzy by my old band Wine of Nails, and Alone and Behind the Veil - two new Grimm tunes. and of course, Hot For Teacher - Van Halen.

7. What drummer made you want to play drums? I'm not sure it was any particular drummer at first but my uncle was really into music and I caught the bug. About 3 months after starting to take drums lessons, I saw the Jump video by VH on MTV on January 1st, 1984 and Alex Van Halen blew my young mind.

I seen Shannon Larkin playing double bass standing up! Fast double bass at that. He was with Wrathchild America opening up for Testament. He's every bit of a showman as Tommy Lee.
