DAMN GEOCITIES! DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT IT ALL STRAIGHT TO HELL

Post by HIMfag666 »

UUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Okay, so herez wut went down. it occured to me and my band that we need a website better than the one rockpage so graciously provided for us. Now, bear in mind i've never built a website before, so a friend of mine tells me about geocities. i've never seen a geocities site that really caught my eye, but i tried it and the page editor is really easy and fun to use, but it lacks a little. So i tried my hand at html. my girlfriend and i sat for 2 and a half straight days working out the html scripts and coding for our site, and i might be biased but i think our site is one of the better sites you'll find amongst geocities. herein lies the problem...IT WONT OPEN 80% of the fucking time! my frustration level while working html and trying my hand at that for the first time led me to ripping out handfulls of hair to the point where i had to shave myself a mohawk to get rid of the bald spots, and then to my dismay i get on this morning post here that our site is finally up and the goddamn thing wont open! FUCK GEOCITIES IN THEIR TIGHT PINK ASSHOLES! so i've chalked this up to the learning experience column and here is what i've concluded. First and Foremost: FUCK GEOCITIES! Secondly, what easy isnt always whats best. right now i hate life and the internet, but when i get paid this week i'm dumping as much as i can into an actual domain and hopefully the next time you see me post FINALLY OUR SITE IS UP, it will infact be up and operational. until that time tho, please keep checking our geocities in the unlikely event that it will ever open, it is infact a pretty cool site for being so cheaply done.

OH and another thing i've learned through all of this. DO NOT GET DRUNK AND LET YOUR BANDMATES SHAVE YOU A MOHAWK! YOU WILL END UP WITH THE INITIALS OF YOUR BAND SHAVED INTO THE SIDE OF YOUR HEAD AND YOU WILL...I REPEAT YOU WILL LOOK LIKE AN ASS!!!! i know this now from experience.

I've built a few Geocities sites before. While I never had problems with the pages opening, I disliked how slowly some of them would load, especially if I were using any JavaScript. I also hated the pop-ups. This was a real pain in the ass when I'd build a site in frames, because nine times out of ten, the pop-up would open up on the side with the links, no matter how I sized the frames.

Besides, when it comes to band pages, a free site just doesn't look professional at all. You'll thank yourself a million times for going with a real domain.

Him,

Here's your problem. Geocities has a tight data transfer limit. You've put MP3s on your site. If one person (literally) goes to check your MP3s out, your site exceeds it's bandwidth and is shut down.

Find comewhere like soundclick or something to host your MP3s. Your geocities site will stay up a LOT longer.

PM me if you need any help.

Alot of bands now will just use an index page linked directly to their myspace page. The myspace pages are pretty editable to do whatever you want with and they will host mp3s...something to think about...

I have had my page on Geocities for about 5 years now and the only problems that I have ever had was how slow it load's and the pop-ups. I have alot of things on my page the only thing I dont think I have is video. I up date my page every day with no problem. I also am using dial-up and it only connects at 40k when my computer is able for 56k.

wow, thanks to everyone for all the advice i'm definatly up for tyin all that out. i'm currently workin on a myspace for the band, i have found some free domains with cheap hosting and wut not, and i would really love to try that site that i dont have to use html for coz this shits really a pain in my ass. i took the song off of geocities so the page might come up now, but its really kinda lame withouth the song. if anyone is interested in hearing it i do have it on my myspace page http://myspace.com/__contagion__ . (keep in mind its really kind of a rough edit, i'm having a friend in cleveland master it for me so when its finished i'll be putting that up). and thanks again to everyone for pointing me in the right direction with this, and hopefully i'll have a worthy website here soon enough.
