Bose=great service
Bose=great service
If anyone is interested in the "personal amplification system" from Bose, I have great news! Last night at the Hitching Post, ours took a crap during our last song. I realised my warranty expired 3 months ago. When I called Bose this morning they said they will have a new system on my front door tomorrow morning, free of charge, so we can play the two gigs we still have this weekend. Now thats service!!

wow
That's pretty impressive. I know the stuff sounds good , but I didn't realise how well they stand behind it. Thanks for the information.

Do you run your whole band thru just one double sub PAS?
Do you ever play electric guitar thru it?
If so, does it sound natural or does it suffer from the same disappointing high-end screech that comes from playing thru P.A. horns?

...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...
I'd run the guitar through a Red Box or other cab simulator, or even a modeler, but yeah, electric guitars would sound okay, I think. I've heard recorded music through this PAS and it sounds good. The big draw with these rigs is the truckpack, and the 30-second setup. They do sound good on the so-called "unlpugged" stuff, to boot.------->JMS

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I'm using a GT-8 now which is like a VF1's two grandsons on steroids. On the solo side, I've got the whole solo rig down to a 4 space FX rack and an EV SXA360 powered cab (2 if necessary). The Bose actually seems cumbersome next to that for setup, but I'm using a redbox thru the mixer and suffering from hornitis. I just about puke every time I play a solo thru horns. I'm thinking the PAS would be much less harsh since there are no horns.songsmith wrote:I'd run the guitar through a Red Box or other cab simulator, or even a modeler, but yeah, electric guitars would sound okay, I think. You do have a nice rig as it stands. G-man has a GT-8... Sooooo many good sounds on that thing, even the best acoustic sim I've EVER heard (I bought one of those Boss Acoustic Simulator Pedals when they first came out... I've tried it on every conceivable guitar, and can't get a decent sound out of it), and lots of spacey synth stuff too. I wish I had the scratch to buy one. The EV powered cabs are pretty much the industry standard now as well. Do they have an FX loop? The Bose has some extra sweet presets for effects and emulation... very little tweaking involved, they just sort of "fit."
The Bose manual does kinda suck, however. It simply assumes you're an idiot, and leaves out a LOT of specs and troubleshooting data. Not a good thing on a piece that replaces so many things, and is so different. I think a better manual would cut down on returns to the company.------>JMS

Yep, Greg and I had a web discussion about the GT-8 before he got that box...I'm glad he likes it. These EV cabs are the latest, best sounding ever and max out at 129db/1w/1m each. There is no mini-mixer like the lower-output ones, just a balanced input/thru output and a sensitivity control. These are meant for flat-out loud hi-quality sound reproduction and they do sound great right down to 60hz. I'm still waiting for the 40lb subs that will match up with them, lol.songsmith wrote:You do have a nice rig as it stands. G-man has a GT-8... I'm using a Shure SCM262 half-rackspace mixer in the rack, right next to the redbox.
I downloaded that POS PAS manual yesterday...it reminds me of an '80s Macintosh computer manual without the smiley faces.
On a different note:
PAS enthusiasts...please explain to me why Bose equipment does not obey the law of physics that states that there is a 6db drop in sound level every time the distance from the source doubles.

You know, I've pondered that myself... and it's been discussed on the prosound chats as well... I'm guessing there's some psychoacoustics involved, as heavy as the DSP engine is on the PAS. I've walked the room at a BJD show, and the PERCEIVED sound level drops maybe 6db at the back of the room compared to right next to it, but that's far less than physics would allow for in actual attenuation, it should be much quieter at the back that it seems to be. How? If I knew that, I'd sell the secret to Behringer, and they'd sell PAS-likes at $300 a pop.
