Its not that bad...yet. Wholesale unleaded futures are trading around $2.17 on the open market today...that translates into a pump price in central PA of about $2.82. 8 refineries near Houston have been shutdown and sealed up. Since they are inland and above sea level, they shouldn't have the same level of damage as the ones from Katrina.

Don't worry, hurricane season is almost over...except Wednesdays at Burgi's, Thursday's at Peter C's and Sunday at the Hitching Post.
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

Hopefully the impact on gasoline prices from Rita will be temporary as with Katrina, and we don't see a long period of extremely high gasoline prices.

Be equally concerned, though, about natural gas prices. A lot of the refineries off the Texas coast process natural gas, and damages to those operations could cause a further spike to already high natural gas prices. And unlike oil, there isn't much reserve on natural gas. Not good news with winter looming around the corner.

Back in 1999, I wired my house all-electric because my usual HVAC subcontractor had a lot of work and tried to gouge me for $10 grand. Did the whole house for under a grand, figuring that it would take a hell of a long time to recoup $9000 in heat savings....little did I know that in 5 years, electric would be cheaper!
