I just had a bad expierence with the Castle's American DJ (Elation) dmx light controller. It's the Scene Setter with 48 faders on it. That light controller got used 5 days a week for months and months before the flash buttons started showing signs of wear. The Step button couldn't take anymore and just gave out. The Tap Sync button isn't far behind it. This is the second light board Dean bought since we put that light show in. I kept the old one downstairs for spare parts. I always wondered if I would be able to do it and last week was my chance to finally find out. Could I open up the old light board, remove a button (four solder points) from the circuit board and successfully resolder it to the circuit board on the new light board
This problem HAD to be fixed in less than 24 hours. The step button runs through all the steps (mirror movement, color change, gobo change, things like that) that you program onto a scene. The broken step button was making all my scenes go insane. Sending the light board or part of it back to American DJ in L.A. California would mean we have to be without a light board for 2 weeks or more. American DJ charges you $35.00 for labor, plus parts. Shipping charges to ship to them aren't cheap either. I had nothing to lose so I went for it.
I still can't believe I did it.
It works perfectly
That was only half the bad expierence. When I put the light board back together, I found that 3 pages of 24 scenes each had been deleted.
Every single one of my light scenes gone with less than 24 hours till karaoke
The light board has two big circuit boards that the faders and buttons are mounted on. They are mounted side by side and a patch cable with multi-pin connecters joins them together. There is a small transformer looking thing mounted inside that one of the circuit boards plugs into with a tiny 2 prong plug. Those are the only two cables you disconnect to get the big circuit boards out. Unplugging one of them deleted all of my scenes.
When I replace the Tap Sync button soon, I'm not gonna unplug either of those.
The Castle Pub's light show uses color changers, Mighty Scan (moving mirror), par cans, pin spots, roto pods (moon flowers), color pods and one of those big ass Aggressor lights. Our 2 strobe lights are 2 channel dmx (750 watts each
). We use dmx digital dimmer packs for all on/off lights and the par cans. Color changers, Mighty Scans and strobes have dip switches on the lights. Even though I said I had a bad expierence with the light board. I think our light board fuckin' RULES! I can't say enough good about it.
