New Peavey Basses: An incredible bargain

Post by grimmbass »

Bass dudes,

Just wanted to pass on an INCREDIBLE deal on a sweet bass (God, I sound like an ad). For the new Grimm material, I needed an active 4-string to add to my arsenal for quick bass-changes (half of our set is in standard, the other half a step down)....I filled that need with a new Peavey Cirrus BXP. This thing is an amazing deal for the buck....you can barely tell it from the $1800 and up custom shop models!

The Goods:
-35" scale (EXCELLENT low tuning, even on a 45-105 standard gauge set)
-LOUD active electronics (make my Spector's EMG pickups seem quiet)
-Excellent construction (neck through body, quilted maple top)
-Top notch hardware
-Incredible setup from the factory (though it will be going to Jules soon for some tweaking)
-5 string and other wood combos available
-Price: Right around $500. Yep...this is insane.

The Bads:
-Active EQ is REALLY active...it's taking me a while to tweak the onboard settings....so much treble available that it could pop your eyeballs.
-Pickups are so hot that they occassionally overdrive my amp if I don't watch the onboard volume knob
-This bass is making the American version an endagered species!

Verdict: Peavey has a winner with this bass! My Spector is still my baby, but this bass is a great mistress...I'll be playing it tonight at the Grimm comeback show if any of my bass bros want to check it out. Let me know how it sounds in the mix!

Thanks,

Kent, I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Cirruses, but I didn't know that they had a budget line model. I've never played one, but they look very well constructed. People have been buying them over Carvins and Laklands, so they must be pretty damn good.

I was really impressed with the Grinds that I've played. I've actually been tempted to buy one on a few occasions. I'm not sure what wood they are made out of (looks like walnut), but they sound and play great.

What fretboard wood does your bass have? Also, is the preamp quiet or hissy? Do you notice a big difference in feel between a 35" and a 34" inch bass? I aks because I've considered going to a 35" inch to get a more solid B string, but I'm not sure if there's a noticable difference in actually playing one. Is there any neck dive because of it?

The Grind basses are actually made of compressed scrap hardwood in Vietnam....ironically, the low cost production method actually produces a great tone! The scrap wood (plus the heavy compression) offers a lot of tonal variety and a fairly rigid construction...they are truly a big "bang" for the buck.

So far I have owned two 35" scale basses, and the stability on the low end is drastically noticable. The Cirrus gains most of the scale lenght between the nut and tuning pegs, but the frets are noticably bigger (I've had to stretch a bit more for some of my normal fingering). I'm very psyched because Spector just announced a new Euro 35" scale 4 string (for us old-school drop tuners)....rest assured that one is already on my list for Santa!

As for the neck dive question....this Cirrus is the most well-balanced instrument I've ever held. It balances in your palm when held by the but of the neck as though it were sitting on a table. I'm assuiming a 5-ver would give you a similar weight distribution.

Peavey Cirrus=incredible deal!
