Give the drummers love....what kit are you playing?

Post by nightcrawler_steve »

I was inspired to start this thread because of Rob'e new DW purchase! Congrats again Rob and welcome to the family!

So yep, Im curious as to what everyone is playing these days? Post your pics or tell all about your kit!

I purchased this set back in 1991 and have been in love with DW's ever since! Im sure Bobby would second the notion that any drum kit can sound good with proper tuning, but DWs have an amazing sweet spot and rich tonal characteristics matched by very few. There are some newer companies out these days that do compare.

Some of you have probably seen the turquoise DW set Ive been playing the last 1 1/2 years. Ive been practicing on this one. But I finally revamped all my hardware and got rid of the flight cases for some soft cases so I can now play my favourite old purple/black kit.

Well, I'm not a member of the DW family, but I'll chime in....

First off, sorry about the darkness of the picture, LOL!

My kit is my beloved Yamaha Stage Custom 6-piece. Here's the rundown of the gear contained within...

Drums, Yamaha Stage Custom in Marina Green:

18" x 22" kick drum
11" x 12" rack tom
12" x 13" rack tom
(2) 16" x 16" floor toms (one tuned high, one tuned low)
6.5" x 14" Steel snare

Cymbals:

14" Zildjian A Rock Hats
18" Zildjian Z Custom Computer Hammered Medium Crash
18" Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash
18" Zildjian Z Custom Medium Crash
20" Zildjian A Medium Ride from 1963.
10" Sabian AA China Splash
16" Wuhan Lion China
18" Wuhan Lion China

Misc:

Attack Drumheads
Remo Muff'l (on kick drum only)
Gibraltar GRS-350C Rack
Gibraltar Hardware
Tama Iron Cobra Rolling Glide Double Kick Pedal
Pearl Hi-Hat Stand
Pearl Roadster Throne (Motorcycle-style seat)
Pro-Mark 707 Nylon-tip sticks
Audio Technica Headset Microphone

And here's a pic....

The ZXTs sound great! I was using them when you saw us at Pelly's. I had all my cymbals stolen from Crowbar back in Febuary (f****n a**holes). So I had to go out and buy all new ones. Was actually cool to buy them all at once though a bit overwhelming. I figured Id spend $250-350 for really good hats (I prefer Paiste). But once I played these I was in love. I liked the sounds over all the other more expensive ones (zildjian, paiste, sabian). They have a real nice brightness, a great chick and meat when held open a bit. A real deal around $150. Im thinking of putting rivets in the bottom hat - adds a real nice effect when open!

The snare is a great snare for the money and Im still impressed by it. I wanted a warmer snare because my DW brass pic is a bit too loud for some of the places we play. I've only been playing out with it for 2 weeks. The wood hoops really make all the difference. There are more dynamics and sounds with the wood hoops for some reason. Rim shots really cut and side sticking? Man Ive never had a snare sound better. The head that came with the drum had some annoying overtones. I replaced it with an Evans Genera Dry head and that took care of all my problems.

ToonaRoockGuy - nice kit man! Were all part of the drummer family :D

That's a Dennis Chambers Signature, my favorite right now . Shawn played it over the weekend and is going right to guitar center to get a price on one. Picked it up on ebay for $140.00 below the best price I could fing on line. It's brand new. With two multi trace strainers.

It came in a DW box. The guy was selling off stuff to pay for his new DW. LOL

PAUL If you are looking at this ...............I...........Need.........A.............Gig..........Fix............................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to gig every snare !

Bill, Those snares are just AWESOME!! I still use my old 6" X 14" chrome Yamaha that I bought back in 1985. I'm still kicking the shit out of it!!

There's nothing special about my kit. It's just an 11 year old 5 piece Tama Rockstar set. I still use the same Zildjian cymbals that I originally bought with my set of Pearl Customs back in 1978.
I have gone through every permutation of heads and anti-ring devices to try to get a good sound and attack through our PA. I mike everything. Right now I'm using Evans Blue hydraulic heads and muffl's on all the toms and BD, and a plain jane head on the snare with 2 zero-rings. I use some old Beyer-Dynamic mikes on the toms, an AKG D-112 on the BD, and a SM-57 for the snare/high hat.

If I could ever afford a set of DW's, I probably wouldn't need all of these ring control measures. Oh, I am lusting after a set of fine DW's or Sonor's. (Please don't tell my wife). BTW what do you guys think about Sonor??

As requested, if there are any drummers who play Yamaha drums, I am running a forum for Yamaha drummers on Yahoo's Groups. Bobby (Hurricane) is a member, and I'm attempting to create a vital resource for Yamaha drummers to comment, talk, swap ideas, and get answers to questions.

I do have "factory" support on this project from Jim Haler of Yamaha USA, and some top-line Yamaha endorsers, including Erik Smith, Dave Mattacks, and Peter Erskine as group members. So if you'd like to join, all you need is a Yahoo ID, and join up! Any questions, please feel free to just ask and I'll get back witcha as soon as I can. Here's the link:
