ROCK OF AGES: The DEFinitive Collection

Post by Captain Cool »

I caught Def Leppard in Pittsburgh with Tesla, and was totally impressed with how updated, and awesome these guys have held together in their 25 year careers.

They've been supporting their new remastered 2 disc greatest hits ROCK OF AGES: The Definitive Collection with such acts as Bryan Adams [co-headlining], Tesla [opener], and Tea Party[opener].

Image

The new single "NO MATTER WHAT" [originally done by Badfinger] is actually a cut from their upcoming 14 track COVERS album titled "YEAH", and can be requested on various stations. (Click the ROCK OF AGES link above to hear the new single.)

It's been getting good rotation on 100.1.

A rolling Leppard gathers no moss. Guitarist Phil Collen notes, 'There's a fine line between cutting edge and the chopping board.'

After this tour supporting 25 years of Def Leppard material, they will drop Q-prime management after a LONG career together. (I believe Leppard gave Q-prime it's start.)

After the switch to new management, the band will release the 14 track YEAH! disc, and release a new "rockier, guitar driven" studio album sometime in 2006.

Twenty-five years or not, these guys are far from dead. I've really been impressed with ALL their more recent material, and I think people forget that these guys used to be the BIGGEST band in America, and for a little while in 1988, the WORLD.

Despite 60 million units in album sales, I don't think they'll ever achieve the credit they deserve for releasing such inspirational albums as PYROMANIA.

Am I the ONLY person who STILL does air guitar to Photograph?

I wish that they'd give more attention to material off of On Through the Night. That was an awesome album. I remember watching VH1 Storytellers or something one time and a girl asked why they don't play more material from that album. Joe Elliot responded basically by saying that they were known more for their radio-friendly stuff. I agree with his position on that, but damn, the stuff on the first album still kicked ass.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

Joe's also said that he felt the production of the first album was sub-par, which is another reason why they don't do the stuff anymore. On that Storytellers episode after the lady's question, Phil launched into the "Wasted" guitar riff and I actually thought they were going to play it. I did hear that on select dates for the summer tour with Bryan Adams that Leppard did play "Wasted" in the set. I saw them in Lancaster with my girlfriend and they didn't play it there, so I'm assuming it was only when they played bigger towns on the itinerary. Interesting story from the Lancaster show...seems Rick was having drum problems through the first few songs of their set (Keep in mind, the road crew had very little time to set Leppard's gear up to specs from the Live 8 performance hours earlier) and Rick had to leave the kit while his drum tech worked on the problem. Here comes Joe doing a cover of "Rock On" to a pre-recorded music track. Not sure if this song was meant to be in the set or not, but once the problem was fixed, the entire band came in on it and they did a great cover of it all around.

By the way Captain...did you happen to get your login name from the lyric line to "Make Love Like a Man?" Just curious.

At Pittsburgh, they played ROCK BRIGADE live, which is from On Through The Night. It was a special treat for us die-hards being that they haven't played it live since 1983.

They also cranked out GODS OF WAR [images of various war mongers flashed on the screens] , and HAVE YOU EVER NEEDED SOMEONE SO BAD -- both of which used to be setlist essentials, but sometime during the mid 90's were pretty much dropped.

WASTED makes appearances occassionally in the setlist, I have a few bootlegs with it.

As far as pre-radio popular Leppard is concerned, they played the first five songs from the HIGH'n'DRY album throughout most of their 2002/2003 X Tour, which went over really well.

You're right.

After the band started working with Mutt Lange, who had already launched ACDC and Foreigner's biggest albums -- they became somewhat embarrassed by the production job on On Through The Night.

It had a lot to do with them being young, and inexperienced too. They look at the album, and see a lot of flaws. Luckily, "WASTED" and "ROCK BRIGADE" are still played today.

I'd kind of like to hear "HELLO AMERICA" updated. It's a really cool song, although the album version shows a puberty stricken Joe Elliott wailing out vocals rather un-Elliottly.

Yeah, that was a nightmare. There was a mini-tornado that had totally ruined a lot of personal items too. There's an article written by Gordon, a friend of the band on www.defleppard.com.

Ahhhh...nice to see you noticed. ;)

I downloaded the LIVE 8 performances, and they played 3 songs. Rock Of Ages, No Matter What (the new one), and Pour Some Sugar On Me. Excellent stuff.

And by the way "ROCK ON", the David Essex cover IS a regular part of the current setlist. They played it in Pittsburgh (with a functioning drumkit however) and I have THAT on MP3 as well.

EXCELLENT cover, superb crowd reaction. I had goosebumps.

Again, this song along with "No Matter What" is going to be on the upcoming 14 track covers album, so they wanted to give folks a preview of what kind of stuff is on it.

It's mostly more obscure stuff, which I think is a great idea. They wanted to avoid overly-covered popular songs, and do more stuff from groups like The Kinks, Badfinger, David Essex, The Police, and believe it or not, there's probably even going to be a Blondie song on the album. ;)

Exciting stuff. Ross Halfin [rock photographer] was talking about how great of a job they did on his official site as well.

Unfortunately the cover's disc has been delayed for release until LATE 2005, early 2006 due to the change in management companies. (I'm getting a rough, early, unmixed version from one of my connections however.)

Then right after that, a new studio album, and tour. :D

I am kinda miffed about def leppard releasing a covers album. I mean, these guys rocked, and still do rock. But to release a cover album ?? It will be interesting to hear Joe sing "Hey kids, rock and roll, rock on. Hey Shout, summer time blues, jump and down in my blue suede shows. He kids, rock and roll, rock on. And where do we go from here, which is the way that's clear. Still looking for that blue jean beauty queen, prettiest girl I ever seen. Rock On" .. Sorry, got carried away lol , I like that song. The cd should be good, but it will be diff to hear ...

Hahah!

Actually there are quite a few people that are miffed about the idea.

The thing is, the album was almost an accident. Originally the covers were thought to serve as b-sides on future singles, but suddenly the band realized they had a crapload of almost-finnished material, and someone suggested just releasing it as a full-blown album.

I'm sure they realize that cover's albums don't sell. It's more of a "fun" thing, and a bonus for those of us that collect Def Leppard material.

I've heard 3 cuts from the album though, and liked what I heard.

No worries...like I said a few times before, the release of this album is in no way inhibiting the release of a REAL original studio album.

It's just the switch to management that is making things take so friggin' long. :?

I saw them on the "X" tour, opening with the entire fgirst side of High N Dry and I about shit myself - they were absolutely AMAZING! You could tell they'd been on tour a while, and Joe's voice was getting taxed, but they wre still absolutely fantastic, and played every song I wanted to hear except Rock Rock Till You Drop, which I didn't expect anyway. They played Too Late for Love, Four Letter Word (from X, which I think is the best song they've done in a while), Make Love Like a Man.... all kinds of stuff, and nailed all of it. Great band - loved them since the first time I saw the video for Bringin on the Heartbreak way back when MTV actually played music...... :)

Were you at the Bryce Jordan show as well?

I was second row. I actually have a DVD bootleg where you can see me in the 2nd row. :)

Actually, there were quite a few dates on the X tour that had ROCK ROCK included in the setlist.

One was the Beacon Center in New York City.

Side 1 of High'n'Dry definitely kicked ass. Still a viable rock act.

You know it - great show - even the lights were awesome - so clear and rich in color!

Boy I sure would like a copy of that!

Wow! How'd it come off live? Such a great tune....

The lights were great. Same goes for this tour. They've been excellent. They were using this Japanese guy for most of the X tour who did the lighting back in the Hysteria days I believe.

I'm not sure if they're still using him this tour, but the lighting is no less amazing. In fact, they've been using video screens in addition to that.

The lighting for "ROCK ON" kicks ass.

---

As for Rock Rock, it's such a high energy tune that every bootleg I have with it has had a good crowd response.

They also did Stagefright, Ring Of Fire, and yes...my personal favorite Leppard song (or at least, one of them) Billy's Got A Gun on the X tour.

Unfortunately, they weren't played quite as much on the 2nd leg of the tour. (Billy was only played in Japan.)

Stagefright is another one that gives me goosebumps live. Viv, Sav, and Phil's backing vocals are just so great live.

---

Something else about the BJC show, is that I was wearing my "SLANG" shirt, and Joe ran over to my side of the stage and pointed directly at it while singing "SLANG", grinning. I was the envy of all the 35 year old women around me.

HA!
