Televangelist Robertson calls for assassination of Venezuelan president

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson has suggested that American agents assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop his country from becoming “a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.”
An official of a theological watchdog group on Tuesday criticized Robertson’s statement as “chilling.”
“We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,” Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network’s “The 700 Club.”
“We don’t need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator,” he continued. “It’s a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.”
Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.
“You know, I don’t know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,” Robertson said. “It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don’t think any oil shipments will stop.”
On Tuesday, critics objected to Robertson’s statements.
“It’s absolutely chilling to hear a religious leader call for the murder of any political leader, no matter how much he disagrees with such a leader’s policies or practices,” said the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
David Brock, president of Media Matters, a liberal media watchdog group, said the remarks should discredit Robertson as a spokesman for the religious right.
Robertson, 75, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.
A Robertson spokeswoman, Angell Watts, said he would not do interviews Tuesday and had no statement elaborating on his remarks.
Chavez was believed to be in Cuba, but his whereabouts were unknown and no media access was announced.
In Caracas, pro-Chavez legislator Desire Santos Amaral accused Robertson of shedding his Christian values.
“This man cannot be a true Christian. He’s a fascist,” Santos said. “This is part of the policies of aggression from the right wing in the North against our revolution.”
Santos said she thinks U.S.-Venezuelan relations could still improve but comments by “charlatans and fascists” like Robertson only get in the way.

I miss the good old Cold War days. Nobody would have batted an eyelash at the suggestion of a political assassination, especially in South America. It was so common that in Woody Allen's film, "Bananas", he opens up with a comedy skit about San Marcos's annual "Assassination of el Presidente", covered live by Howard Cosell & Wide World Of Sports.

Cosell: "Good afternoon. Wide World of Sports is in the republic of San Marcos where we are going to bring you a live on the spot assassination. They're going to kill the president of this lovely Latin American country and replace him with a military dictatorship...the crowd is tense but anxious...and...wait a minute...could it be...yes, its el Presidente. El Presidente has come out of the palace. (gunshots from a crossfire, el Presidente slumps on the steps) .... "IT'S OVER, IT'S ALL OVER"

Robertson must have advanced Alzheimer's and thinks its 1970.

I'm all for assassination as a means to and end in situations that call for it ... I just can't stand religious icons and their morals that only apply when convenient.

Robertson is the Donald Trump of religious charlatans. The "Moral Majority" is neither, but they tend to vote a certain way. Getting worked up over a TV evangelist's hypocrisy can only have one effect:

unnecessary hypertension.

That's like asking someone if they'd rather drown to death or burn to death. Facism is facism; it doesn't matter whose name it's done in. Read up on European history to see what happens when the church is given too much political power.

You have a good point paul, I would rather see a country founded by christian beliefs and given a separation of church and state clause, just so that doesn't happen. Sound familiar? That's why we have the best damn system ever.

Actually, many of the founders were deists and Unitarians, not fundementalist Christians.

You don't need religion to reason for morality. The sooner people realize that, the better off we'll all be.

i listen to christian radio during work cause it's better than rock radio and i'm bored,...and i don't live according to any religion, not that i don't believe in a higher something,...anyway,...my point is that most self-proclaimed christians in my community and on this board don't live godly lives and, in the eyes of these people on the radio, that's just as bad as any non-believer. they say to be a true christian, you may not use the bible as you see fit. they say that there is no room for people who even follow basic guidelines in a godly way. they say you must live this certain way. period. god is priority number one. every single aspect of your life should be lived in god's word, not just loosely based on it. so, i say, if you are going to say that you are christian or whatever religion, go the full nine. 'cause if you don't, the title of this subject seems to fit.
this is not a burn either, i'm just trying to figure this out.
