Someone beat me to the punch on Peart, imagine that!

Any Mike Portnoy drum solo is kick ass, but I think that the one featured on Images and Words: Live in Tokyo is the best. And for a little humor, he plays a few bars of Becon the Call from Pantera.

Guitar solos, on the other hand, is a tight one. Let me think that one over.

Definatley a cool solo. I believe he used an envelope filter (Bass Balls pedal?) to get the cool funky sound during the bridge/guitar solo sections.

drums: I saw Louie Bellson on the Tonight Show about 15 years ago (for those that don't know, he is the drummer largely credited with having the first double bass drum setup) - he played with teh band, and had a solo spot that was AMAZING - one section all he was playing were teh bells to his cymbals, and my jaw was on the floor......

and, of course, I must make mention of the man himself - Neil Peart's solo on YYZ no Exit ... Stage Left

guitar: too many to name, but a cool one would be Hear n' Aid, Stars.... Where else can you play "Name That Soloist" to so many great guitar players in one song? :P

my roommate in college and guitarist in our band said the best solo he ever personally witnessed was Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi - don't think I ever would have picked Richie to be one to impress that way......

+1

Richie's a phenomenal player. He has chops, taste, and tone. His solo on Bed of Roses still runs chills up my arms.

Guitar Solo: At the moment, I'd have to say it's Zakk Wylde's solo in "Stillborn" by Black Label Society. I know that his live shows have gone to shit, but good GOD can he fucking PLAY!!!

Drum Solo:

1. Neil Peart - "YYZ" off Exit Stage Left
2. Shannon Larkin/Sully Erna - "Batella De Los Tambores" from the "Changes" DVD.
3. Anything Virgil Donati or Mike Mangini
4. "Let There Be Drums" by Sandy Nelson (go look it up)
5. "Sing Sing Sing" by Gene Krupa
6. "Bonzo's Montreaux" - Led Zeppelin (final album, great groove solo!)
Dood...

Which DM keyboardist is your favorite? I vote for Moore, but Rudess and Derek aren't exactly subpar.

I think Rudess has the most talent. As the myth goes, he was accepted at Juliard at age 9. I guess he was one of those child phenomenons! Sherinian has a lot of cool sounds, but I think he was kinda limited. He was really arrogant too. Moore isn't too far behind Rudess in my book though. I can't do anything w/ a keyboard, so I can't really vouch for knowing what I'm talking about!

Two of my favorite guitar solos, both by Frank Zappa:

Watermelon in Easter Hay - Joe's Garage Volume II
Muffin Man - Strictly Commercial (I have a live version that is 10 times better)

There are too many guitar solos to pick one.

Edit: One always keeps coming back. UFO, On With The Action. With perfect V-tone, Schenker plays with much longing and then slowly develops the solo until his typical acrobatics take over.

My fav drum solo is in the song Incomudro--Hymn to the Atman, from Kansas's Song For America

The first person who came to mind for me was Nuno Bettencourt when I thought of cool guitar solos ... if I had to pick one, I'd have to go with "Play With Me," from their first (and best) album ...

As far as drums ... hmmmm ... I guess I'd go with the "Harley idle" at the beginning of "Hot for Teacher ..."

I would be hard pressed to select a single guitar solo or drum solo as favorite, but the best bass solo I have ever heard is "Sting of the Bumblebee" by Manowar (played by Joey DeMaio).
