Without question, KISS should be in the top ten of any list like this even if only factoring the pure marketing genius that went in to their success. Not the best instrumental or lyrical band ever by any stretch, but what an impact they made on the industry ...
FatVin wrote:Yes they've survived and yes they "adapted" but so has Madonna ...
For this list, anyway, Madonna's not a "band," but again, you have to give her props for being a survivor, as well as a talented performer; a totally different category than the Britneys and Christinas of today ...

At least vocally, JBJ influenced my style greatly, and not the "radio" stuff that everyone knows and gauges him by, but the bluesy, non"fluff" stuff that no one pays any attention to. The "album cuts" if you will. We play hard rock and metal, but at karaoke I sing Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel and Engelberg Humperdink because I like to get down like that.
Bottom line with lists like this — and this point has already been made — is that unqualified people develop them. I mean, several weeks ago I saw the "Top 100 Greatest Metal Bands" on VH1, hosted by Dee Snyder, and whadaya know, Twisted Sister was # 2. Are you kidding me?
It's all about personal preference, but if you're gonna rank these guys, I think the factors I've mentioned — longevity, staying power (there's a difference between those two) and sales in particular — should be huge determining factors.
Influence, as you spoke of, should, of course, factor in. Bon Jovi was to 80s hair metal what Nirvana was to the death of it.

That's what she said.
