Van Halen had this provision in their contracts to make sure it was read.
They had a provision in their contract demanding M&Ms backstage with the brown ones removed. This was a way of seeing if the promoters read the contract. If they saw brown M&Ms, they knew there would be problems with the show.
How to make sure they read the contract.

That's a smart idea.
MnM's are the only things that could possibly rival beans. Much much better than them...
I wish the purple ones were here to stay though....Blue's are even better. And greens...well the green ones are good for you!

It is actually true. Alot of bands will put some of the most cornball stuff in a contract just to see if the venue really reads it and pays attention to detail.

I read a DLR interview awhile back that said the band indeed put the M&M thing in for a good reason... to check adherence to the contract tech rider... seems they loaded into a high-school gym early on, and their tech rider ( a part of the contract that is the same for every buyer is called a rider) specified a floor weight-bearing amount... they took the time to weigh everything they had on truck scales, because even in the beginning they had a lot of gear. Anyway, you guessed it, the gym floor caved in, thankfully before the audience was allowed in, and when the school and promoter/talent buyer tried to sue the band, they simply pointed out that the contract covered it, but was not adhered to. Not only did they not get sued, but counter-sued for damages and breach of contract and won. The M&M's simply showed whether the contract was held to, and while they never cancelled a show because of M&M's, it warned the band to check out all technical aspects of the show.------>JMS
