Warning! This will destroy all data!

One thing I like to do is use Win9x boot floppies with fdisk and scandisk. If you delete the partition with fdisk, reboot and create a new partition, it should get rid of any lingering virus problems. If that doesn't do it try running scandisk:

Do a full "DOS" scandisk with surface scan to see if you have bad sectors on your disk. If you have bad sectors, it will mark them and then you should be able to continue. If you have a pattern of "B"s, like a B every 8 blocks, your hard drive is probably going bad and you should get a new one.

That is why I recommend a floppy boot disk with all the disk utilities on it.

If you're reinstalling a 9x OS, one thing I like to do after formatting and partitioning is to copy the CAB files over to the hard drive, and then just run SETUP from there rather than the disk. That way you won't get prompted for your disk when installing new hardware.

1000 formats ?? Hmm .. Do you know what a system cleaning program is ?? I would suggest getting one .. What Os is it ?? If it is ME then I can see all the formatting you would have to do. But, the normal person only should have to reformat once every six months whether the pc needs it or not .. When I format a computer I use a Acronis True Image Image. If I don't have it available I fdisk it every time ..

Reason being, when you reformat, it over writes things, it don't delete anything per se. So, a lot of the files you had on it before the reformat are still there. People who write the viruses know this, they also know that a average computer user, one being someone who just uses it to check email and chat a little bit, never heard of fdisk ..

The reason the computer is running so fast is because you fdisked it. Usually, cleaning the Partition like that will make it go faster .. :)
