And when you stay out too late with the boys the CD won't make you pay for it with your balls and your manhood. ( I know , I know , Your wife ain't like that ) ( talk to me in a year ... 2 at the most ! )
I'm glad I didn't have to fight in a war, I'm glad I didn't get killed or kill somebody, I hope my kids enjoy the same lack of manhood
I couldn't stay up last night...i'll be going today to get it, right after work....i heard the last track is suppoed to be another 'Change of Seasons' . Is it true???
Who's planning on coming to Gigantour??
My favorite band can do better unison solos then your favorite band.
I downloaded the disc last night but only had time to scan through it I will listen to it in full tonight, as many of you know I am luke warm at best with Dream Theater I believe they are very talented however I don't think you need to write music that caters to your ability to show off, before you start bashing hear me out, if you're a guitar player who is incredible do you need to play 200 notes per second just because you can? Same for drummers HOW much is enough and how much is TOO much? I believe music should be written for the good of the song not for the attitude of the artist. Hey that's just me.

That's what DT does Mr. Grimm. Not every song of theirs is a million notes per minute. In fact, the last 3 albums (inlcuding the new one) have been quite the opposite. They have been heavy, but not out of control. Only like one or two songs on each ablum have been all out crazy shred. Even the ones that were all out "show-off" songs are still very tame and well-written. Compared to aimless wankers like Malmsteen, DT's "show-off" songs are a work of art.
I don't believe DT has ever made a tasteless song to just show off their abilities. Even if they did, then it's rightfully so. If you have a talent like theirs that you obtained from the most prestigious music colleges in the country, and you make a career out of using that knowledge and talent, then you darn well better show off your abilities!
Bobby, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised by this album when you hear it. It is the complete oposite of the shred crap you're talking about. In fact, I bet most DT fans will be dissapointed in this album because of the lack o' shred.
I love it. The last song with the orchestra is incredible. And most of the stuff is kinda poppy, but that's cool.

Moondoggy my friend you are FAR too hostile, I was simply giving my opinion and as I said I have not yet listened to this album so we will see, I too agree that Malmstein is a wanker. I saw Dream Theater and Queensryche 2 summers ago and I LOVED the Ryche of coarse but 3 songs into dream theater I left my seat and went to the beer area it's just too much " look what we can do " for me. And Moon I'm just Bob or Grimm ... MR. Grimm is my fathers name...

Lol! I meant nothing hostile by my remarks either......just stating my $0.02. I do agree with you on Queensryche. They are rapidly becoming my #2 band. They're the definition of well-written songs.
Hey Doggy just out of curiousity who is your #1 band? I think that this is the most accessible DT album that I have ever heard. I don't think there is a bad song on the disk. I think that either track 6 or 7 is a slow build on a key part that is really good.
I like this CD a lot and will keep listening. I am wondering how I will like it after repeated listenings.
Torn & Frayed
One World, One Voice, One God! Music is LIFE!
I went to Wal Mart, Sam Goody, and FYE today. ALL of them were out of the new DT album, but that's probably only because the got a total of three each.
So, here's where I ask the true DT aficionados... if you had to compare this album to the other DT albums, which would compare?
My numero uno band is of course DT! I think Images and Words is their best album. That is what I compare all their other albums to. You just can't beat that album!

Bert, this album is not really like any of the other ones. It has a lot of heavy moments, but it is mostly emo stuff. I would say it is 'Anna Lee' meets 'Hells Kitchen' meets 'In the Name of God'. It is exactly the type of album they needed to put out. A lot of people HATED Train of Thought cuz it was too heavy. So, they made this album to make everyone happy. Petrucci really holds back, which makes it kinda gay, but kinda cool. Rudess and LaBrie are the stars on it.
I had the album in my car, and I hated it...when I got home and put the headphones on, it was a completely different experience. It's nothing like you'd expect.

I have to disagree (but don't worry; I'm not being hostile ). One of the things that always amazed me about Petrucci is that he has amazing chops, yet he has a great ear for melody. I've never heard a solo by him where I said, "What a wanker!" Now Yngwie: that's another story. Even though DT has a lot of technical ability amongst its members, they're still a very "musical" band.
One thing I do commend DT on is that it seems they are putting out quality albums on a consistent basis (like every year or so?). It seems that many mainstream artists shit out an over-produced pile of dung every five years. The record execs must be trying to milk the singles for every cent they're worth.

And it also contains my favorite guitar solo of all time: Under a Glass Moon.
That CD didn't leave the player in my car for months. Our old pal Jeff Wallack was in the same boat.
My favorite guitarist for years was EVH, but I lost faith after I first heard 5150. The aggression was gone. And I don't really think that it was Roth that made the difference. It was the loss of turmoil within the band. They got too comfortable and you could hear it in their writing.
After that Satch stole my ears, but I think that Petrucci is the most well rounded guitar player on the planet right now. Satch is probably still my favorite, and Vai is up there too, along with all of the old school rockers. I also agree that Yingyang is a wanker. I saw the last G3 tour and I wish that Malmsteen hadn't replaced John on that tour.
Petrucci's new solo CD is a piece of art IMO.
Ah yes...Jeff was a big shredder fan. I got a great story about Jeff and Dream Theater. A couple years ago, I had 10 tickets to a Pittsburgh show. Turns out that four people couldn't go. So I was scambling around to find so spot fillers. Jeff was one of the people I asked, and he said that he didn't want to make the trip. Well, long story short, we get to the show...find out that we are sitting in the third row. We are going ballistic over the seats. Half way through the King's X set, Jeff Wallack comes walking in and sits down right behind me in the fourth row. We're both flipping out about the what a coincidence it was. It turns out that decided to go with a buddy at the last minute. But what are the chances that we would be that close. It was so cool to see Jeff rocking out and headbanging to the whole DT show. He loved good music, and is very missed.

I'm getting Octavarium tomorrow. God willing.
I agree Ron, I love the Petrucci album!
The DT album is OK. I only got through one listen of it so far. I have a few complaints about repeated structures, that appeared on songs from older albums. A couple of vocal melodies are almost exactly like other songs and some of Portnoy's fills are too predictable and almost note for note the same ones he has played a million times before. I think I will just have to be in a certain frame of mind to enjoy this album. Hopefully it gets better for me the more I listen.

I think that Eddie's too much of a one-trick pony. Don't get me wrong - what he does, he does well. But it's like he hasn't grown as a musician. He's still playing all of the tapped arppegios and dive-bomb harmonics that he played on the first Van Halen album. One could argue that it's what defines his style, but I see it, as you do, as being stale and uncreative.
Funny, even I have a Jeff/Dream Theater anecedote. The first time I even became aware of DT's existence is when I went into Jarret's one time and saw Jeff with a DT shirt on. I thought it was the coolest shirt and any band that had a cool name like "Dream Theater" had to kick ass. I finally bought A Change of Seasons because I remembered Jeff's shirt.

OK Guys I listened to it twice straight through and................................................................................................................................. SORRY, I don't get it, it seems long and it seems to miander on and on, I honestly got bored waiting for the end. Hey that's what makes a horse race I suppose, The new System of a down on the other hand is AWESOME !!
