Good point. I missed the whole Southern Rock thing in the late 70's-early 80's, so it's still relatively fresh for me... there are still Skynyrd songs I've never heard.----->JMS

knowing that DLR had a dugout of superstars and put out crap like California Girls (a cover no less!...not even original crappy music) makes me feel much less guilty for stooping to play Poison and Tommy Tutone to put asses in seats. I just keep telling myself, Jessies Girl in the first set pays for Bombtrack and Dream Theatre in the third set
I have tiny hands, like a Tyrannosaurus. T-Rex may be the lizard king but he could never play the guitar...

That's because they're not. Hair metal in the "metal definition" sense, is it's own brand of metal. It's not heavy metal, it's hair metal, thus it's own version of metal. Which, by the way, hair metal goes over better by dudes with long hair in Cannibal Corpse shirts than the metal core (for example Killswitch Engage) or the hardcore (too many examples to possibly list as it's the new "trend") that many people get confused with "real" metal does.

Truthfully, the way I see it, with 70000000 sub-genres of metal you can put anything with distortion in a class and call it some kind of metal anymore...

Bert:

It does seem like anyone can do it. It's really depressing to hear how good a metal band is and then go to watch them and the guitarist is a freaking wanker, if he can even use all of his fingers to play the damned thing at all.

Word up!! There were so many times when I heard a band or new release and said "these songs suck, but the guitar player can shred (drummer is awesome, etc.). I can't even say that these days.

However, as I had mentioned in an earlier post, the playing field is a lot more even these days and those who didn't/ don't want to be around get weeded out early. This is mostly because there is little or no support from clubs and weekend warriors.

On a brighter note... QUEENSRYCHE will be at the Palace Theater (Greensburg) in October. That gives me just enough time to grow my Tate mullet.

I took your metal quiz and scored a 10, but I'm not exactly sure what that means.

And IMO, that's a good thing. Why should crap bands get the same recognition and make the same money as bands with accomplished players, good songs (if original), and large followings?

There's a lot of things wrong with capitialism, but I truly believe in the market. The market is God. :D

So so sad...

Post by Peachz28 »

I will be the first to admit I LOVED the cheesy hair metal bands. I loved how freakin huge the scene was. We haven't had that large of a music movement since.

But I have officially thrown in the towel. I always try to go to the hair metal shows because I enjoyed them. The last show I saw was so so sad - I just can't bear the heartache anymore. (Ashes to Ashes, Slaughter, and Skid Row)
I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce.

Don't you mean: "I can't stand the heartache. So beats the red, red rose. And time........".

Sorry, one of my favorite Skid Row tunes.

Man, I was just telling Kevin the other week that Slaughter is a sadly underrated band. They don't get a lot of respect, but they had some killer musicians and good songs.

Eh, after reviewing the scores, 10 is about the median so instead of saying death metal there, you should have gotten old school metal head (fan of metal such as Ozzy, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Priest, etc). I need to raise the cut off up more in my formula. At least you didn't get vagina boy status thought .

"Can't stand the heartache...so bleeds the red red rose...
Time heals a broken heart, and that's just the way it goes!!"

Greatest Skid Row song on their first album. ANd to me, Slave To The Grind was just a MONSTER album. Still play the sh*t out of that one at home.

Slaughter really was underrated. Their first album was great, and I thought that The Wild Life album was just as good.

I'd have to find a Flying V bass, and you'd have to spray paint "This Space for Rent" on some toms and hang them behind you.

It would be bad-ass I tells ya.

And to think I liked ya Kev.

I had Mark Slaughter serinade me during the Poison/Cinderella tour in 2000. Too bad for him I had no interest. Although I had about half a dozen very large ladies (well over 200 lbs) try to climb over my head to get to him. From what I've seen the rumors are true. the majority of Slaughter girls are all very large women.

Here's some interesting reading. It's from 99 and gives some background on the Cinderella/Slaughter fued.

http://www.metalsludge.tv/main/index.ph ... &pageid=42

Sadly I was informed that during the 2000 tour, Slaughter still carried the same egotistical attitude they had then. Although this time around they were smart and kept their attitudes on the bus.
The person below me enjoys a good spanking.

I used to sing just like Mark Slaughter. Then my testicles dropped. Actually, trying to sing that falsetto stuff was always embarrassing to me, and I NEVER liked how it sounded when I tried, plus it would just tear up my throat to sing at a volume to compete with Marshalls and Ampegs and drums on a riser 2 feet away.
I have heard through the grapevine that Mark Slaughter is a genuinely nice guy, though, and always did the metal thing tongue-in-cheek, which I think was reasonably common. Really, it wasn't considered dorky at the time to wear spandex onstage (it actually started with seventies hard-rock sexual abiguity) and I personally would have worn a TU-TU if it got me the amount of tail that wearing spandex did. I knew it was goofy for a farm-boy to be all heavy-metal-rockin', but if you had told me that, the punk in me would have flipped you off. It eventually went out of style, like everything does. We all have pictures we wouldn't want many people to see... how many of you tried break-dancing, or had a Bart Simpson haircut with maybe a rat-tail, or sported a power-mullet, or wore those gigantic pants that have long zipper pulls, or Jamz, or Austin 3:16 t-shirts, or hell, acid-wash?
Every one of us likes to think we're too cool to be caught up in trends. Wrong!
Anyway, know your role, rooty-poo, and smellellellelle-ah... what The Rock is cookin'. :) ------>JMS

2 questions that are (sorry)off-topic...
I'd have to find a Flying V bass
My son's first bass was a flying V, and people told him these are rare, is that true? He found that bass very uncomfortable (top-heavy) to hold and hated it.

another question is why did my friend get a citation for walking home instead of driving home drunk? Talk about stupid...

I'd be complaining if Bret was playing 200-seat bars, but he's playing clubs in the 1000-2000 person range, so I wouldn't call it a bad gig. Not an arena, but all he would have to do is continue with Poison and the 10,000+ seat venue shows would continue. And on another note, would anyone deny even playing a 200-seat venue if you got paid $7800/show like Bret? Didn't think so...
Yeah, he is still doing pretty well. I seen him on Nashville star - Pure pittiful lol .. He said in some interview that he is releasing a country cd soon.

Poison was a good band back in the day, still not as good as dokken though. CC couldn't hold a candle to Lynch ...

As for modern rock ? I can't listen to it for very long .. Some of them I can. But most of them give me a headache ... I guess I wouldn't fit in with the "New Rock" crowd. I like all kinds of music, just seems the new rock is more about marketing and no talent .. Now don't get me started on hip-hop, boy bands, or the britney spears wantabees .. lol ..

As a matter of fact we do have a couple of songs in the works...It's taking its sweet time though, with our drummer working second shift...We're not out to going any further in this buisness or anything, we just want to have some of our own stuff out there...Plus, with the amount of requests for our own stuff, we have to please the masses!...LOL.

They aren't the most plentiful basses out there. Gibson does have a Korina model (with a matching Explorer version too) that I remember you could order out of Musician's Friend. I could be wrong, but I think the latest Korinas were a limited edition run.

I would imagine that they would be uncomfortable to play though, especially pizzicato. I'd imagine the slanting body would be very strange.

Agreed. Flying V's look cool on stage, but they are a pain to play unless you are standing. If you try to sit down and practice, forget it. It will keep sliding down and if you put the inner part of the 'V' on your leg then the neck is in a wierd position that makes it hard to play.

That aside, I would love to have an old Koa V, an eighties metal icon.

Except for my 1989 Flying V90 Double. That model has a little Steinberger flip-out "cutaway" where the '58 & heritage have the rubber pad. The V90 has so many great features, its too bad they don't make standard V's like that. The weird thing about it is that there is an angled single coil in the neck position. That's OK. Pop in a Dimarzio ProTrack and voila, instant PAF without the feedback. They also made them with a single humbucker.
