Out of Exile
Anyone check out the new audioslave cd yet? I haven't bought it yet, but I hear it's really good. I just haven't had a chance to go out and get it. I've always been a big Cornell fan, and I liked Rage.
The first album really wasn't THAT great. About 4 songs or so that I really liked, and I'm so tired of hearing 'Like a Stone.'
However, I heard good reviews about a song on the new album called "Doesn't Remind Me." I downloaded it today, and it's pretty good. Good melody, cool vocals, nice guitar work. I might have to go pick up this disc soon.

I...HATE....AUDIOSLAVE. Good God, I hate them with a passion. Probably because I loved RATM and Soundgarden (the early stuff, like the entire "Louder Than Love" CD)
And probably because I have to play them 4 times a day on the radio. Gah. I just think that they are WAY overrated. Just not my cup o' tea.

Preach on man. I think that Audioslave is a pale imitation of the greatness that the two previous bands were capable of. They just don't seem to be pushing themselves as musicians now.ToonaRockGuy wrote:I...HATE....AUDIOSLAVE. Good God, I hate them with a passion. Opinions are like assholes....they're closer to the heart than the brain, and most of them stink...so here's my stinky two cents:
I think comparing Audioslave to Soundgarden and Rage is like comparing Velvet Revolver to GnR and Stone Temple Pilots....kind of apples and oranges. Rage was political and cerebral, Soungarden was technical and musical, Audioslave is more emotional. I think the new album is a little more "produced" and the emotion is watered down a little, maybe trying to capture a little more of the Soundgarden feel, but I don't see as many singles getting airplay as we saw on the first - the songs on Out of Exile "grow on you" more than having imediately recognizable hooks (a la the guitar intro to Cochise). Morello still kick ass, and man does Cornell have range!

2 singles in one month. That's more than most other bands do in 5 months. Trust me, I'm in radio. I know.Brian of the Clan Plush wrote:...but I don't see as many singles getting airplay as we saw on the first...
For proof, visit http://www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/ ... _Chart.asp for this weeks top-30 rock tracks. Audioslave has 2 singles in the top 13. Check http://www.radioandrecords.com/Formats/ ... _Chart.asp for the top-50 in Active Rock. Audioslave has 2 singles in the top 17.

More thoughts
Well I picked it up today finally....
First thoughts, I think that 'Be Yourself' was a poor choice for the first single, and 'Your Time Has Come' has a main riff that sounds a lot like Metallica's Bad Seed.
I don't think these guys will ever outlive their pasts, so that's why everyone looks down on them. If there was never a Soundgarden or Rage, I still think this would be a pretty good album.
I agree with Matt, Brad's a good drummer along with Tim they make a pretty badass rhythm section....even looking back to Rage. Tim knows when to sit in the pocket or just break it out.
I still dig Morello's guitar solos, but I wish Cornell would pick up the guitar again....He practically wrote Superunknown. Come on dude, two guitarists, an innovative lead guitarist, a voice like his, and an unstoppable rhythm section, there's got to be something there.
I like "The Worm," "Man or Animal," "Drown Me Slowly" and "Danelions"
'Be Youself, Heaven is Dead, and Your Time Has Come" are ok...Once radio play dies down on these, I'm sure I'll like them more.
"Doesn't Remind Me" is great! That is a great song! I'm sure it'll be over played and I'll hate it by this time next year (as I do much of the Newer Chili Peppers, Metallica, and 'Like a Stone'), but this is a great song.

I agree with some of things said by everyone here about the album, but I disagree with anyone who thinks it sucks, or that Audioslave sucks.
I actually like this album A LOT more than the first one. I think it's a little more laid back and it shows growth and maturity for all of the members of the band. It can also be very in your face when it needs to be. I think they found a good balance.
Doesn't Remind Me is one of the best songs I have heard from anyone in a really long time! That one stuck out for me immediately.
The tour of the year, which I would love to see, and you know would pack the arenas would be if Audioslave opened for a re-formed RATM and Soundgarden. How sweet would that be?

Well I don't know about maturity of the members, but I do like Audioslave. I don't think thay are breaking ground like RATM and Soundgarden did, but that happens. The guitar playing is unique and the sound is good. At first I though it was a little bit boring but it is growing on me.
It isn't fair to compare Audioslave against there previous projects. And as far as them "sucking" I think that any time someone puts out original material then there is artistic merit to it.

So don't close your mind and hear it for what it is. Don't judge it based on pre conceived notions, allow it to stand on it's own. This is a good release and again the musician ship is extraordinary.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I really don't know what people were expecting when the first Audioslave album came out. Personally, I would have been disappointed if it sounded like RATM/Soundgarden Version 2.0. I remember when Cochise first hit, and I thought, "Wow, that's a good slice of hard rock there." I really wasn't expecting anything innovative, because frankly, neither Rage nor Soundgarden were innovative bands. Rage was a lot of funk riffs with rapped vocals, and Soundgarden was a stoner rock band (ala: Kyuss/Black Sabbath) with a more radio-friendly sound. That's not to take anything away from either band - RATM is one of my favorite bands of all time.Brian of the Clan Plush wrote:Opinions are like assholes....they're closer to the heart than the brain, and most of them stink...so here's my stinky two cents:

Being in a "Super Group", whether it's Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Blind Faith, or The Traveling Wilburys, is a tough road to hoe, because people expect the music to transcend anything the members did previously in other projects. I use to think that if you stuck great musicians in a room together, great music would come out of it. As I got older, I realized how untrue that can be.
Edit: Also wanted to add about the songs growing on you: I find that albums that weren't immediatley accessible for me are the ones that I continue to listen to. I Mother Earth is one of my favorite bands. When I first got the Scenery and Fish album, I didn't care for it much at all. It didn't sound very much like Dig. The SRV-style riffing wasn't there, the funky bass lines were gone, and the cool percussion solos weren't there. But as I listened to it more, I realized how brilliant the album really is. It was the perfect step after Dig (which to be fair, wasn't all that original. As I said, a lot of the riffs sounded like they were ripped right off of Stevie Ray).
Enjoying art isn't a passive experience.

To Kevin, I think Rocky doesn't play enough U2, and quite frankly, I can't ever find a radio station, especially Rocky 104.9, that will play sick ass heavy shit like U2's Vertigo and other U2 songs. God, if I don't hear more U2, ill never listen to Rocky again. Ok, dude, I'm sorry, I was trying to be funny, but while doing so, I puked all over my Tears for Fears poster, dammit.
You want to hear a great Tom Morello, listen to Primus' Anti-Pop disc in which he laid down some sick tracks too.

I gotta chime in on this..
Rocky 104.9 playing U2 every 20 mins is the reason I got Sirius in my car...
Luckily I can still use 104.9 in the shower every morning.... When the U2 song comes on (and it WILL) I know I'm late for work and need to skip a few of my 2000 parts to scrub..
Then I run to my car for Sirius' "Hard Attack"
As for Audioslave I completely despise them... I can't believe RATM did this to their fans....
Anyone who's seen RATM live knows what I mean...
end of 2 cents worth

Chris Cornell is one of my all time favorite songwriters. I don't think I ever heard a song of his I didn't like. I guess to each their own. I am almost finished reading my July/August issue of Guitar World's Bass Guitar magazine featuring Audioslave's Tim Commerford on the cover. Really good article on one bad ass bass player. I thought it was interesting that one of the smaller headline captions on the cover says "Ben Shepard, ex-Soundgarden thumper returns with Hater". I'm gonna definately check out the new Audioslave CD. Love them or not, it looks like they are having alot of sucess with this project. No matter who you are, no matter how much sucess you have/had, no matter what band you were in before, no matter how much money you made doing this, you will have haters that don't like what you are doing.
