Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Post by stonekrow »

Did you know that Leukemia is the leading disease killer of children? In the U.S four in every 100,000 children between the ages of 2 and 10 will be diagnosed with Leukemia this year. Every 12 minutes in the U.S. a child or adult dies from Leukemia or a related cancer. Lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or Hodgkins disease. I am part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training which participates in endurance sports events to raise funds used to research blood related cancers. In the "Benefits" section of this site you can find info on our 3 band benefit next week in Johnstown. I am doing a 100 mile bicycle ride next month in Lake Tahoe Nevada which I have been training with my team for the last 6 months. I will be riding in honor of 12 year old Amy Katz from Mt Lebanon Pa, who was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) last year. CML is rare for a child her age, but because of the scientific research funded by the society, she is currently fighting the Leukemia with a new form of chemotherapy. I feel that if we all do a small part we can change the lives of children and families everywhere by helping find a cure for blood related cancers.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Post by YankeeRose »

First, I want to say I applaud what you are doing whole heartedly and wish I could financially support your efforts. ALL is the kind of Leukemia that claimed my father-in-law, April 21, 1996, less than a year after he was diagnosed. One of the things that really "got" to him, was that what he had was a "common childhood Leukemia". He'd said he could not imagine a child going through what he'd had to. I'd never heard of Leukemia doing what it did...it "presented" itself, or made itself known, with tumors on his Spine, causing him to at first experience tingling and then numbness, finally he went paralyzed from the waist down. Through Radiation and Chemotherapy, his prognosis was good and he was walking again, but before he could undergo a bone marrow transplant, an infection took his life. He died less than a month from his 57th birthday. He was a wonderful man and is greatly missed. Thank you for what you are doing...it does make a difference - I am sans vehicle, but if there is anything I can do short of requiring driving, let me know...

Thank you Yankee and my sympathies on your loss. My soon to be father-in-law was diagnosed with "ALL" last year and is doing very well at the moment, he too is 57 yrs old. My grandfather died of leukemia when I was 5 years old, he was 81. I've seen many people battling various stages of these diseases, many are children under 12. My heart breaks far beyond any feelings I thought I was capable of when I see these kids. I knew from the moment I became involved that I'd do anything I could to help. Thanks and feel free to PM any time.

just because a person can, and should donate some of their hard earned money doesn't mean that it should be demaned. that was upsetting.
