Tragedy in Hastings

Post by BDR »

Image

Aside from the tragic events of Friday night/Saturday morning in Hastings, it was an excellent weekend for BAD DAZE. The crowd at DAVEY's Saturday night was, as always, perfect, and our debut at PELLEGRINE's, Altoona, the next night couldn't have been better. HARRY and the rest of the crew at PELLY's were awesome, JIM PRICE was in the house and the party atmosphere and full room of kick-ass partiers were killer. Thanks to all involved.

Back to the tragedy in Hastings. We cannot express our grief and condolences enough to the families of those three people lost in the horrible house fire. A 50-year-old woman, her 15-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old little boy, all trapped inside the house, died early Saturday morning.

I can tell you, there is nothing more painful, surreal or disturbing than the smell of smoke from a blaze that claimed lives. When I arrived for our show, that smell, coupled with the ominous vision of the gutted home right across the street, hit me hard in the chest.

As news of the fire reached us Saturday afternoon, we struggled with how we could throw a "party" in the wake of this disaster. What we tried to do was put a positive twist on the emotions of the night and we were able to, at the very least, collect some money for the families.

Those who came to party gave very generously and we want to thank the quality people at DAVEY's for their thoughtfulness. The night was successful because people — many of whom didn't know the victims or the families — gave without hesitation. They gave from their hearts.

When the fire broke out, DAVEY and JUSTIN from DAVEY's didn't blink, didn't think, they just grabbed a ladder and ran across the street to start pulling whoever they could out of the burning house. They, along with local firefighters and police officials who responded in minutes, saved three people who would've otherwise perished.

Selflessness: This is what being "neighbors" on this planet is all about. Thank God for people who don turnout gear and enter burning buildings every day. Thank God for people like Davey Gunther and Justin Goss who react when it's time to react, who put others before themselves — who do the right thing.

Don't take these types for granted. Hold them in high esteem. Thank them for their service, their compassion, their gigantic hearts.

Well said Rob. We also had a bad day Saturday on the Pa. Reunion Ride. One of the riders, who came down from Conn. hit a deer and went down hard. When we got there he was laying in a clump of trees, not moving. I've met and ridden with the guy 3 or 4 times before and he is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. We were about 50 miles north of St. College on RT.144 when it happened. It seemed to take hours for an ambulance to get there,(actual time about 45 minutes) and they ended up life-flighting him to Danville. We just got word that he's got a badly bruised spine, which is actually GREAT news. The first reports we got were that he had 3 broken vertabrae in his neck! Then they discovered that what the were seeing in the MRI was scar tissue from arthritis and some previous surgery. Everyone that was on the ride stayed and did everything they could to help, and the monetary offers and cards and letters and prayers just keep pouring in from EVERYWHERE! It's great that in tragic circumstances that "we" can still pull together when it really matters most. The Mrs. and I are going up to Danville to visit on Wed. and take him some magazines and stuff to help him pass the time, and to take his fiance (from Conn.) out for lunch or dinner to try to give her a break from it all.

I'm not trying to compare this to 3 people dying, I just needed to vent a little and thought it was worth mentioning how when the going gets tough, people are still willing to help each other out.

Not at all, Bag, venting is always good therapy and it's more than welcome on this thread. Hope your contemporary is OK.

I think that we should get some area bands together and hold a benefit for the people in hastings. Actually rent out a venue, and hold a good benefit, bands from all over the place. We could probably have contress grier hall donated for the cause. Its an idea, up in the air, and certainly one of the best things we could do to try to help. Falling Higher acoustics would be into it, for sure. Anyone else want to do it?

Im sure we could even get one of the venues in hastings to hold it, im positive that davey would want to do anything to help out. Ryan and I (Falling Higher) arent a huge band or anything, but we pull a following, and im sure that we could get a good sized crowd to come down if we knew about it a couple weeks in advance. I really want a part of this because my friend's little sister Lindsey is the one who passed away in the hospital today. If anyone starts anything, please let me know, i really want to do this. Im good friends with a lot of the depto's in hastings, and Im dying to find a way to help them out.

Rob, hats off to ya !!!!! Its the second time I know you've come through to help out. I heard about this but didn't know it was right there or that Davey was involved, Davey is a good guy and has always treated me well both with Bands and personally.

Now my Rant : I'm not sure if my facts are right but hearsay was that the family had no electricity so they were using candles, candles are OK but if its you're only source of light its bound to cause a problem sooner or later. What sickens me is that we live in a society where some people live in $200 - $300,000 dollar homes, own 2 vehicles worth more than $50,000 and then other people can't afford electricity for there $10,000 dollar shack. I know natures rule is only the strong survive but I thought we were supposed to be civilized also. So if you weren't blessed with brains or a rich Daddy is it you're fate to die this way ? Anybody out there with a $200 - $300,000 dollar home and a $50,000 dollar vehicle I hope you feel like shit when you get in it.

As you said tony about davey being a good guy. My great aunt was the old lady that lived by him and past about 10 years ago. But davey was always there to help her when she needed, he would take her to the store at times and help when she was out doing things, he was a good friend to her and to the family as well. It is hard to find people with those kind of ethics

I hope that all the families directly affected by these tragedies and misfortunes find the strength to make it through. I've heard a lot of great things about Davey Gunther over the years, hopefully I'll get to meet him soon and shake his hand. Hang in there Rob.

Davey is an AWESOME individual. He would give you the shirt off of his back if you were cold, thats the way he is. He has always been that way. I've known davey since i was about 8 years old. My mom would always take my sister and i over for wings. He is an extremely nice guy and I've always felt that it was an honor to know a guy like him. He's faced a lot of ridicule over the years, but always stays the same, and you cant find a man like him around anymore, they are few and faaaaar between.

And the question still stands, anyone want to try to get a benefit show in the works? If so, let me know and i can go over to talk to Davey about it. It would be a great way to pull some money and support together for the families that are associated with the tragedy that took place. If it does happen, it should be an all day - 2 am thing. on a weekend, either saturday or sunday. Give people time to stop in, show support, listen to some music, and everything. I would love to participate somehow, and i know that a lot of you have hearts the size of jupiter, and want to get in on it. So, now would be a good time to start planning for something like that.

If it does happen, i think the planning should start early that way we can advertise at all of the shows we have coming up, and get some street work done. If you wanna start some planning, let me know. I want to help too, and will put some equipment towards the cause as well.

I spoke to Davey after our show this past Saturday & he definitely wants to get something going. He's willing to put together or help with whatever we need to do here. Do you guys think an all ages show would attract more people? Davey offered to use his club but if we're getting alot of people involved here do we need a little more space? As far as a day probably a Sunday would work better to accommodate more bands. Everyone agree? Big thanks to everybody that's responded here. Kevin, man it would be cool to jam again. Hope you can get involved here too. Ok let's make this happen. Thanks again.

BTW, an all ages show would be a lot better, because we could pull in a lot of the younger crowd who go to Cambria Heights. Anything to pull more people in, get more money raised for the families, and everything, would be a lot better than limiting it to an over 21 crowd.

Kids in this area are so devoid of music because they have nowhere but the poolhall in NC to check out bands, and all the bands that play there are emo/screamo bands. So i think that an all age show would attract a TON of kids from the hastings/patton/NC/carrolltown/nicktown area because they are constantly seeing the same bands over and over, and would be interested in seeing more of the local talent, and helping a great cause.

Hey I just read this thread (haven't been home all day) and I know we haven't discussed amongst ourselves, but I think a benefit should be in order. If we were to do it on a Sunday, I think the day before Memorial Day would be awesome. The only problem is that gives us only two weeks to organize and promote. I don't know if that would be sufficient time. Anyways, keep the suggestions coming.

And yes, I also tip my hat to Davey. Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't kiss ass, but I do give credit where it's due and credit is due for Davey. I've been playing his club for a while now, and he's always been nothing but fair if not generous with the bands I've been in.

This might be the perfect time for me to finally take action on an idea that I have been thinking about for a very long time...

the "Northern Cambria County - Music Capitol of the World" Concert
to showcase the wealth of musical talent that we have right here in our own backyard. Perhaps we could hold it at Patton Park? Or one of the High School Stadiums? I don't know, I'm just pulling ideas out of my ass right now. Just off the top of my head I can think of at least 20 active bands/groups/entertainers who could get involved. What do you all think?

I think that if we get to planning it and working out now, by that sunday we should have it advertised. If Jim can advertise the hell out of it on the backyard rocker, and we can get street teams to hit certain areas with flyers, and promote it at our shows, hand out flyers there, and just work it til it comes, the people will flow, but we all need to hit an exact date. We need a lot of radio advertisement, and as i said, some street teams to hit towns/grocery stores/malls, i think that it would be a major success. Hell, put flyers under windshield wipers in wal mart parking lot. If we can do all this, we are garanteed to have a massive turnout, especially if its for a good cause. charge $4 at the door for the venue, and just get as many bands to show up for an all day, all age show. Im sure that after 11pm the PLCB isnt gonna bust a benefit show, and no one will report it if they know what its about, so we should just have an all out jam-fest, all day. Anyone agree?

While I agree this needs to happen, and that a Sunday would be ideal, I think rushing in to it would be a bad idea. I will be more than happy to coordinate this effort, and it's apparent that at least two of my bandmates are behind the idea.

I'll start doing some sniffing around and laying the groundwork beginning tomorrow. Please hit me with an e-mail ...

Rob@BadDazeRocks.com

... if you wish to contribute in any way.

Thanks to everyone who has come forward already. No amount of money will change what's happened, but it's apparent that these people were financially strapped as it was and funerals are very expensive.

I feel we all have a responsibility to come to the aid of these people in their time of need. Thanks so much.

Billy & The Inmates would make for a very awesome show! Rick Ramsey is a band unto himself. Homers Army..well, if ur full show is anything like the acoustic show i saw u guys do at crazy daves...well...kick ass is the only word to describe it. Hy-Tyde is awesome. There is a band from Heilwood called Brother Trust that i think would be a pretty good addition to the list, they play some pretty cool stuff.

What would be awesome tho is if we could pull in some of the bands from altoona, indiana, and johnstown, that the people in this area dont normally see due to travel issues.

Me and my brother used to play in Davey's old bar as well as his new bar in our Nightwing days. Some of my favorite gigs I've ever played were at Davey's. I played there with Stix and Stones and another one of my favorite bands I was in called Impact (with my brutha Griff). Davey's brother Alex is an AWSOME drummer and soundman. He and Davey are both great guys. They were both always more than fair to me. Stix and Stones used to rent Alex to do some sound and lights for us. I'd love to see the show fall on a Sunday. I'm booked every Friday and Saturday to run sound so I wouldn't be able to make a show on either of those nights. I see so many benefits on here that I've wanted to play at :( I'd like to bring my acoustic act (there's 4 of us) and/or jam with any musician there. I'd bring my drum kit and let all the bands use it. I'll bring my conga and tamborine for all to use too. :D

I feel bad for those poor people who's house burnt down, it's one of the saddest things I've heard of in a long time. But your statement about how people should feel bad because they live in a nice house or have nice things is one of the more ridiculous things I have read on this board, especially when it doesnt help the issue of this thread. What about all the people with the $30,000 bikes that post on here? Should they feel like crap when they get on their nice new Harley to go for a ride? Or should everyone think twice before making extravagant purchases, like a new $3,000 drum set, or going on vacations, or buying themselves a new outfit, and donate it to the government to dole out as they see fit? Are you advocating socialism, where no matter how hard you work, everyone has equal housing & equal wealth?

Good God, let's not start a fight here. WHo cares what people's political views are? This is a "Helping Out A Family" thread, not a fucking pissing contest. Get the hell over it, you two.

Let's focus on how we, the Rockpage community, can help these folks out.
