Ann and Nancy Wilson
The singer from Evanescence, Amy Lee?

I like old Alanis and Avril, you may consider them pop instead of rock.
Janis, not sure which category to put her in, rock and blues and you either love her voice or hate it.
David Coverdale
Courtney Love (as a rock screamer)
For Technical singing
Josh Groban
Mariah
Celine
Alica Keys
Whitney, pre Bobby Brown

The amazing thing about her voice is that she has great pitch. Most women don't!dayzichick wrote: The singer from Evanescence, Amy Lee?
I saw them in a Little Rock club about 3-4 years ago, and I was quite impressed. She looked pretty dorky sitting behind a keyboard most of the night, though. Glad to see that they made it, and that I bought their first album, Origin.

probably doesn't qualify as rock but Chris Martin (Coldplay) has a fantastic voice
my hands-down favorite for front-man is Scott Weiland....Rob Zombie is a close second - saw him live at the BJC a few years ago and it was the best show, nay spectacle, I've ever witnessed

Yeah, he had alot of Halford going on...I have Power Metal, it's interesting to hear Pantera playing hair metal...bassist_25 wrote:I was told that he sounded a lot like Rob Halford back in Patera's earlier days. I've never heard those early albums like "Power Metal", so I really can't comment.
If youth knew; if age could.
Jeff Buckley
Anyone who has never heard his voice... it will completely change your perception of the voice as an instrument. Tim Buckley (his father) as well.
They never knew each other and both died pretty tragic deaths way before their time. For me, both of them were really underappreciated, and pushed the limits of what rock and roll should be.

When I say your name, you say "here" which we will assume stands for "here I am, rock you like a hurricane."
Phil did have a good "singing" voice, but blew it out touring the "Cowboys From Hell" album. He couldn't hit those high notes anymore so he stuck to screaming from there on out. He did sound pretty cool the way he did alot of those songs live in the lower raspier voice. Most people probably don't know that that had alot to do with the Phil leaving Pantera. Dimebag and Vinnie wanted to go back to some more melodic stuff (alot of the Damage Plan album was originally inteded to be the next Pantera album) but Phil didn't want to 'cause he couldn't hit alot of the notes anymore.J Michaels wrote:When he would actually sing, Phil Anselmo of Pantera has (had?) an incredible voice - listen to Cemetery Gates or Medicine Man and a few other tunes - MAN that dude can sing - their style turned towards the growly type of vocals, but I would have liked to hear more of his melodic capabilities.....
what about?
I am surprised that no one mentioned the following:
Meatloaf
Robin Zander from Cheap Trick
Michael Sweet from Stryper
Just a couple of singers for everyone to think about

I agree, fantastic voices (esp. Jeff). Tim Buckley's song Once I Was at the end of that movie Coming Home was a real tear jerker. I just watched that old movie recently, check it out if you like Vietnam-era movies. However, I would never call them rock and roll voices. Too quiet, beautiful and ethereal (sp?) for RnR.Jeff Buckley

then tonefight said...
dude, you're kidding, right? I am the biggest Bob fan on this earth, borderline obsessed, and I think his voice is the one thing he is NOT good at. Of course his PHRASING is un-matched but the quality of his voice is not good at all. Just my opinion of course. He's all about other things for me, like only the greatest songwriter of our time.Did anyone mention Bob Dylan ?

Tony, you mentioned him just to get me going, didn't you?tonefight wrote:Did anyone mention Bob Dylan ?
This thread is for best vocalists, not poets. If it was for poets, I'd put Dylan somewhere in the top 5. I'd probably give Ian Anderson the nod at number one.
However, this is for vocal ability. Bob Dylan couldn't win a karaoke contest at a backstreet bar in Altoona.

Paul, I think becoming a SANTANIST would make you a better latin-rock guitarist....bassist_25 wrote:I didn't realize that one's theological belief determined his or her vocal ability. If that's the case, I should become a Santanist so I can growl like Glen Benton.

Ahh, touche.
I guess this means I'll have to tune up my Paul Reed Smith, find a bunch of successful modern artists to write an album with in order to revive my floudering career, and just come in after all the tracks are laid so I may wank pentatonic stuff over top. Then I can win some Grammies.

not just voice, Jacob Dylan is gorgeous!I like Jacb Dylan's better than Bod Dylan, as far as voice goes.
I think Tori Amos has a great voice...have to be in the mood for her though, she's kinda weird
