Here is the recap of the November 1 edition of "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock!
We returned to the mailboxes this week to get updated on new local and regional recordings that have arrived in recent days! We checked out a lot of new music on the program, including new songs from Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug out a 1985 number from Altoona's Rolling Rockers for this week's "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Joey Dalto's All For You album in "The Professor's CDTim Woods, Jonah Whale, Dave Nichols, We Came From Space, Hedgerow Down, The Inner Urge, Joe Konior, Dive, Sahayra, Paul Cha, Conflict Cycle and more! We also remembered longtime Altoona-based singer Steve Shiffler, who passed unexpectedly on Oct. 28 at age 63, by spotlighting his singing talents with two of his past bands for two special "Local Music Flashbacks" - the first was a 1985 song with his band XL during the first hour, and the second was a 1993 song by his band Legacy during the second hour. We also updated "Local Music News," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song by southern New Jersey's Kenny Curcio, and we reviewed Ted McCloskey's The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 2 - Monotony & Madness album in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

In Local Music News...
The Altoona area music scene was shocked and saddened this past week by the unexpected passing of Steve Shiffler on Wednesday at age 63. Steve had sung in a number of area bands over the past four decades, including XL, Detour, Legacy, Not Them Guys, 100 Proof and more. More recently, Steve would make guest appearances on stage with This Albatross, which features his daughter Autumn and son-in-law Phil Wagner. Steve was an energetic singer and onstage personality, and was well-liked in the area music community. We at the “Homegrown Rocker extend our heartfelt sympathies to Autumn, Phil, Steve’s family, friends and the music community.
We reported previously that due to COVID-19, the annual November Patched Together: A Day Of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch public concert event had been cancelled. Instead, the Patched Together From A Distance: 2020 Concert will take place online on Saturday evening, November 13 starting at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature performances from Rick Wertz, Mellissa Vella and Matt Otis & the Sound, as well as opportunity for members of the community to make donations to help out Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program.
A second Live United Live online concert event has been announced. Live United Live 2, a fundraiser for Centre County United Way, will take place on Friday evening, December 4. The event will start at 6 p.m. on the Centre County United Way Facebook page, and will present at least 12 area bands and performing artists, accompanied by opportunities for members of the community to donate online. A full list of performers for the event will be announced in mid-November.
Some area music names have earned nominations for the upcoming annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMAs). Zupe recently announced that his Christmas season song “Dasher, the Reindeer, from his new polka album Na zdrowie! (Nostrovia!), has been nominated for Best Holiday Song by the HMMAs, while the Derek Woods Band’s song “Unforgiving Tree has been nominated for Best Americana/Folk/Acoustic Song. The Red Carpet event will be held on January 27th, at Avalon in Hollywood.
