Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the January 31 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.
The original game plan was to have band guests on this week's show; however, the logistics didn't work out for coordinating the interview and their appearance fell through. So we went with 'Plan B,' and continued to introduce music from new recordings that arrived in recent days. We debuted new songs from Tilted Shadows, Elizabeth Findley, Rivers, The Hit and Miss Engines, Laika the Astro Hound and Chet Vincent & the Big Bend. We also commemorated the tenth anniversary of the passing of popular area musician John Baker by featuring one of his most popular songs from 1999 for this week's "Local Music Flashback." In addition, we updated "Local Music News" and stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song by Laurel, Maryland's Sons Of The Radio.
Here is this week's playlist:

We know we will be up against some pretty stiff competition from the sporting world during our next program. So we will be doing what we usually do for Super Bowl Sunday, spotlighting the "Ladies of Local Music!" We will give attention to the women who write songs, sing, play guitars, keys, percussion, accordions and other instrumentation on area stages! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a song from a past band or (female) artist from the archive for our "Local Music Flashback," and review Sherri Mullen's Shadows CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" So turn down the sound on the football game and crank up the "Ladies of Local Music" special edition of the "Homegrown Rocker!"
Upcoming guests and specials include:
FEBRUARY 28 - Millennium Music Conference Recap
MARCH 6 - MMC Contest Winner (to be picked at Millennium Music Conference)
MARCH 13 - St. Patty's Day Special
(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

Controversy has arisen over a proposed bill by a Philadelphia councilman that, if passed, could limit the performance of live music in that city. Councilman Mark Squilla's proposal would require owners of nightclubs, cabarets, bars and restaurants in the city to collect the names, addresses and phone numbers of entertainers - such as bands, rappers and DJ's - in a registry, and to share that personal information with police upon request. The proposed law would impact venues that hold 50 or more people, and would also raise the license application fee for venue owners. The outcry from Philadelphia's music industry and concert goers over the bill was swift, with critics citing the potential negative impact on the city's music scene as well as civil liberties issues. Squilla said his bill was misunderstood, and added that he intends to amend the bill.
The Strayers have announced the end of their group after a two-year run on area stages. The members will be pursuing different musical projects.
Even though we are just entering February, the dates for the second annual Concert at the Caves event have already been announced. This year's event will take place on Saturday, July 9 at Lincoln Caverns Amphitheater near Huntingdon. The performers are yet to be announced. Ticket prices will be $20 in advance or $25 at the gate, and advance tickets go on sale in mid-February.
