HOMEGROWN ROCKER 11/29/15 (LOCAL MUSIC LIVE IN CONCERT)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the November 29 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

Most musicians will declare that live performance is the best way to experience their music. This week, the "Homegrown Rocker" put live performances in the spotlight with the latest installment of the "Local Music Live in Concert" Special, with every song played on this week's program a live performance track by a local/regional band or artist! We covered a broad spectrum from rock to blues to folk, jam, surf rock and more. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," and remembered the late Jimmy Rossi and the U.S. House Band with a 1997 live performance track for this week's "Local Music Flashback."

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE CLARKS - "Better Off Without You"
PURE CANE SUGAR - "Midnight Rider"
BISCUIT JAM - "Friend of the Devil"
WOLVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING - "Black N'Blues"
RHYNE McCORMICK - "The Train Song"
PATRICK McGINNIS - "Shades of Grey"
JIMMY ADLER - "Sweet Potato Sham"
TONY JANFLONE, JR. - "Wish You Didn't Have to Go"

HOUR TWO:

HALESTORM - "It's Not You"
THE TURBOSONICS - "Zombie A-Go-Go"
FELIX & THE HURRICANES - "My Strength and Courage"
MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS - "Bring It On Home to Me"
NORMAN NARDINI - "Little Things"
U.S. HOUSE BAND - "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" (1997, Local Music Flashback)
MYSTERYTRAIN - "What Would It Take"

Our next program will see the return of a familiar guest, freqent-flyer "Homegrown Rocker" guest Sterling Koch! Sterling is releasing a brand new CD, Rock Slide, and we will discuss and hear new songs from the CD! In addition, we will update "Local Music News," dig into the archive for another "Local Music Flashback," and review Strait & Miller's Steal My Soul CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

DECEMBER 20 - Christmas Special
DECEMBER 27 - 2015 Year in Review Special
JANUARY 31 - Derek Woodz Band
FEBRUARY 7 - Ladies of Local Music Special

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

A new acoustic duo will make their debut on area stages next weekend. Shallow Nine singer Erika Marino is joining forces with singer/songwriter Rue Moyer. The pair will perform a variety of songs from across the musical spectrum, spanning the 1950s to present, and are also working on original songs as well. Erika and Rue will debut on Friday night, December 4, at the Belmar Hotel in Altoona.

As previously reported, the third annual Caring for Kids Basket Party and Benefit Concert takes place next Saturday, December 5 at Woodside Bar & Grill in Johnstown. The Basket Party takes place from 1 to 4 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the day help out Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Performing at the benefit will be Ian Jeffreys, Justin Garman, Adam Ernst, Shades Of June, Inside Out, Under Cover and Yum. Donation at the door is $5 per person before 8 p.m., and $10 per person after 8 p.m.

The area music scene mourns the passing of two musicians in the past few days. Longtime area musician Cliff Turner passed away on Friday after a lengthy battle with kidney disease. He was 59. Cliff played bass in a number of projects spanning a 40-year career, including his most recent group, the Cliff Turner Band, as well as Cliff Turner & the Afterburners, JP Rocks and others. And Steve Buterbaugh passed away on Saturday afternoon at age 53. Steve played drums for several Altoona area band projects over the years. We at the "Homegrown Rocker" extend our sympathies to the families and friends of both me, and the area music community.
