HOMEGROWN ROCKER 9/28/14 (ANTI CORN LEAGUE)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 28 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 9 to 11 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com). The show can also be streamed via either Rocky website, www.rocky1049.com or www.rocky99.com.

Thanks to our guests this week, Cambria County indie rockers the Anti Corn League (www.anticornleague.com) for a fun and intriguing conversation! We met the band members and learned their story, heard tracks from their dual CD Womb I and Womb II, and were relieved to find out that their name didn’t originate as a result of strong dislikes for corn! Along the way, we debuted new songs from Full Kilt, Ted McCloskey and Caroline Reese & the Drifting Fifth! And with Anti Corn League members Chris Kupchella and Derek Gresh in the house, we dug out a 2002 song from their past collaboration, Soundrive, for this week’s “Local Music Flashback!” We also updated “Local Music News,” and reviewed Michi’s Castles in the Air CD in this week’s “Professor’s CD Corner!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

ON THE RUN – “Monsters Like Me”
BLACK RIDGE – “Chocolate Hair”
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “White (Jerome)”
FULL KILT – “Paint It Black”
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “Pot Luck”
TED McCLOSKEY – “Cameras and Microphones”
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “I Have Too Many Carnival Songs”
CAROLINE REESE & THE DRIFTING FIFTH – “Fightin’ Side”

HOUR TWO:

THE LAMPSHADES – “Police Scanner”
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “Mummy’s Tummy”
MICHI – “Stay”
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “Mystery Bus”
SOUNDRIVE – “Blue Summer Nights” (2002, Local Music Flashback)
THE ANTI CORN LEAGUE – “Lucia Piranha”

Next week, we welcome first-time guests on the program from Bedford County, as we get acquainted with Borrowed Time! We’ll meet the band members and learn their story, and hear tracks from their latest CD, Long Dark Highway! We’ll also update “Local Music News,” dig a song by a past area band from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and review Sterling Koch Trio’s Place Your Bets CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Upcoming guests and specials include:

OCT. 12 – XS FOR EYES
OCT. 19 – STAGE HANDS
OCT. 26 – HALLOWEEN SPECIAL
NOV. 2 – (NO SHOW DUE TO STEELERS FOOTBALL)
NOV. 9 – ADAM ERNST
NOV. 16 – JASON McINTYRE & JUNIOR TUTWILER

In Local Music News…

Singer Tony Irvine has parted ways with area party rockers Ganister. The split is said to be a friendly one. Ganister is currently seeking a new frontman to replace Tony.

Two prominent members of the Centre County music scene have announced they will be taking some time off. Al and Chrissy Miller, core members of such recent groups as Body & Soul and Fat Girl Slim, have decided to step away from live music activity for an extended break. They said they may surface as a duo in the future, but otherwise are on an indefinite break from live performing.

Nationally-renowned ukulele performer and instructor Lil Rev, who authors instructional ukulele music books in the Hal Leonard series, is returning to the area to perform and present a workshop. The Allegheny Ukulele Kollective is presenting the workshop and concert by Lil Rev on Monday evening, November 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Edith Davis Eve Chapel at Penn State Altoona. Lil Rev’s workshop, “The 12 Essential Strums For Ukulele,” will teach ways to improve right-handed ukulele strums, followed by the concert. Tickets for the combination workshop and concert are available through the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective for $25/advance or $35/door, while admission to the concert alone is $10 per person. For more information, visit the Allegheny Ukulele Kollective’s website, http://alleghenyukes.com/.

The “Homegrown Rocker” extends speedy recovery wishes to area musician Brett Fanelli, who is on the mend from logging some sudden hospital time this past week.
