Here is the recap of the August 24 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com). Thanks to our guest this week, Ron Gallucci (www.rongallucci.com), for an interesting and insightful interview! Ron has just issued his third solo CD, Strength; we featured songs from the disc, and got Ron’s thoughts on his new music, the creation of the album and his career at the moment. Along the way, we debuted new songs from the Sterling Koch Trio, Borrowed Time and Felix & the Hurricanes, updated “Local Music News,” dug into the archive for a 1997 song by State College’s Box, and reviewed Blues Evolution’s Inspired CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

We will check out new local and regional recordings that have arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters in recent weeks, meaning a lot of new music will be played! Along the way, we will update “Local Music News,” dig a song by a past area band from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” step “Across State Lines” to explore a piece of recorded music from an out-of-state band or artist, and review Matt Otis & the Sound’s self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

In Local Music News…

Several music-related events are coming together for next month. The second annual Halos & Harlots concert and female artist showcase will happen on Saturday, September 27 at McGarvey’s in Altoona. The event is being hosted by Lies, Inc, and presented by Placid Promotions. Starting at 2 p.m., Halos & Harlots will feature a day-long slate of female-led musical entertainment, beginning with acoustic acts and leading into hard rock acts by evening. Some of the names already confirmed for this year’s Halos & Harlots include Lies, Inc., Sucker, Melville Walbeck, the Leeja Stark Band, The Signature Vibe, ShadowBurn, Mycenea Worley and Miss Melanie and the Valley Rats. Proceeds from the event will help out Family Services of Blair County.

Family Services of Blair County will also present their fifth annual Family Fest on Saturday, September 20 from noon to 5 p.m. at Duncansville Community Park. The event will feature games, food, face painting, children’s activities and musical entertainment. Musical entertainment announced thus far includes the Backyard Rockers, Strings Radio and Mo Yon. Admission to the event is free.

That same day, September 20, area country performer Elaini will host the Sing A Song contest as part of a three-day festival presented by the nonprofit organization Our Community Cares. The singing contest will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Captain Jack Lion Club Park in Mill Creek, Huntingdon County (near the traffic light intersection along Route 22). There will be two age divisions, 12 and younger, and 13 and older. Registration for the 12 and under division is $5, while registration for 13 and older is $10, with entry fee proceeds helping Our Community Cares. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in both age divisions, and winners will be determined by a judging panel of local and regional musicians. The event will also feature singing performances by Kira Burley and Elaini.

And registrations are now being accepted for next year’s 19th annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. The event will be held from February 19 through 22 at the Best Western Premier, the Central Hotel and Conference Center in Harrisburg, with music showcases taking place at some 30 different venues throughout the Harrisburg area. The conference features two afternoons of music business panels, clinics, workshops, networking, day stage, one-on-one mentoring & demo listening sessions, and industry trade show. Early bird registration is being accepted through December 31, and the deadline for performer and band submissions to showcase at Millennium is November 20.
