Tis the season for Christmas tunage!
Just recorded an instrumental Christmas tune for fun. Here's my take on O Holy Night. Nothing crazy or anything, just a little jammin' for the holidays. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm using a Tascam DP24 for recording & have been very happy with it. All in one unit & fairly reasonably priced. Still have a ton to learn with it although it's not too difficult to work with. So far the hardest part is getting the time to use it!

Great to hear from you Joe & thanks! Still using the Charvels & Jacksons. On this recording I used a USA Charvel ProMod & a Mesa Roadster. First that I've recorded with the Roadster so still dialing it in but love it. Tons of different tones in that amp from cleans to crunch & everything in between. TC G Force for effects. Hope you're still jammin' dude.

Right on bro!!!
Yea Im still playing and collecting guitars, which are starting to over run my living room, so Im thinking about thinning them out to a more reasonable amount. I think I have 13 or 14 at last count, and they are all from 1983 to 1993, except for a 2012 Standard Strat, and one of the 2013 BC Rich Gunslinger re-issues (1 of 6 made in Retro Yellow)
Im so hoping for an Adrian Smith Jackson, and I hear tell that there might be a Charvel Jake E. Lee sig guitar in the works for 2014 to coincide with his comeback (Red Dragon Cartel is the band name, and they're coming to McKeesport March25th,2014 $20 tickets and Im there!!!!)
The G-Force is a nice unit for sure, and it's one that I have on my list of rackmount effects units. Right now Im using a 1995 or 96 Digitech RDS1900 effects unit, but it's gotta go because some of the buttons aren't working and they stick, etc.....
Im still using my same rig, which consists of my old 1985 Engl 620 tube preamp and my '93 Marshall 9200 poweramp.
Im most likely going to shoot for either a smaller rack (ADA-MP2, Marshall JMP-1, Mesa Tri-axis, through a 20w poweramp) for practicing purposes.
Or perhaps a low watt tube combo like the Marshall Class5 or maybe a Blackstar HT-5 or something of that nature....
Sorry for being so long winded in my post....
Keep up the good work buddy, I really enjoyed hearing you again!!

Charvel's website says that the Jake sig model is a go. Saw some videos from their first show & Jake sounded great to me. The singer was off but they said he was sick, etc. Hope things pull together for them cause Jake is one of my favs & glad to see him getting his life together & back playing at the level he should. Jake & Warren DeMartini (two of my all time favs) just did some Charvel clinics in Japan. Wish they'd do something like that over here. Sounds like you've got quite the collection going there-awesome! I really dig the Engl stuff & actually was going for an Engl but found an unreal deal on that Roadster. The Blackstar stuff is pretty good as well. Prior to the Roadster I was using an HT5 for recording. You can get some cool tones out of that little thing. Want to check out the new HT Metal series, revoiced with a little more gain & tighter sound. Heck yes!

I sent an email to XLGuitars to see if he would check and see if Charvel would do a small run of those Jake guitars. *fingers crossed*
I don't care much for their singer, and if he is indeed sick, then that must be a heck of a cold he has! It just wont let up! LOL
Oh well, Im just glad that Jake's back in action! I did read about Jake and Warren doing that clinic in Japan, and I agree it sure would be nice if they would do that kind of thing here in the states...
Do you personally own a Blackstar HT-5? Im kinda tossing that and the Class5 around at the moment.
Yea I have accumulated quite the collection over the last few years, and it's becoming a pain just keeping them all up and running because I play them all on a daily basis. I try to run down through them all when I play, but even so, it's quite a hassle to keep them all up to par.
I don't believe in keeping guitars tucked away in their case, theyre meant to be played!
I have a little of everything: BC Richs ESPs Ibanezezes, Kramers, Fenders and of course Charvels and Jacksons (which I had 4, but Im down to only my Black 93 KV2, but I remedied that by buying another Black 93 KV2 this Monday, so Im excited for that to get here!)
I currently don't own a Gibson, but Im headed to guitar center in Monroeville this weekend to see if they can get me a Black SG Junior. According to Gibson's site, that model is discontinued, but I cant get a straight answer from anyone, so I'll hopefully get an answer in a few days. I'd love to get one of those puppies for sure!! I have a Gibson Tony Iommi humbucker still in the case that I bought specifically for in an SG Junior (1humbucker SG), so with any luck I'll finally be able to use that....
All I played for like 10years were Flying V's and King V's, and I despised the Strat body guitars, but now that's all I own pretty much! Kinda funny how styles and tastes change over the years. So once I opened the gates to the Strat bodies, I was buying everything cool that I ran across. I bought/sold/traded a lot of guitars over the last 4 or 5 yrs, aside from the ones that I currently own.
Im so tempted to hit the Music Emporium and order up an American Strat in Blizzard Pearl, or Lake Placid Blue with a Maple board of course....LOL
Those Charvel Pro-Mods are so badass, I really wish they'd make them for us backwards players.....Which color did you get? I personally like the White ones, and the Black ones...
I have a Charvel Star body ordered right now,(KNE guitars) so Im hoping to have that sometime soon so I can get started on that build. I always wanted a Star body, so Im very excited about this one!
I'll try to catch up with you tomorrow...til then keep on Rokken to Dokken!! Hahaha!

I'm glad to see you coming back around, Joe. And I definitely hear you on how tastes change over the years. For years, I was never really an Ampeg guy, but I decided to pick up an SVT-II non-pro at the beginning of the year and wondered how I went so long without playing one.
I've always told Kenny that he needs to either get a Jackson V or a Kelly to add to the collection. I'm still holding out for that day, haha.

Right on Paul, everyone should have a V on stand by..Haha
And, yeah it is strange how your personal tastes change over time that's for sure my man. I guess for me I just chalk it up as getting old...Lol
Ampegs are very nice units, so you didn't down grade in the least bit sir
I've been 'around', just haven't been on here at all. I did some forum browsing late last night and read up on a few things, and it was nice to see some old faces on here, but some are m.i.a. like Ive been...
As you can see, I did not forget how to hi-jack threads like the good old days....Hahaha.
My apologies Kenny, but I'm sure you are cool with it, as long as we keep on the subject of shred guitars.
Not as much traffic as I expected to encounter. What happened?? Did a lot of guys/gals get banned, or what???

Yeah I do have an HT5 & love it. Really good tone for the price. Sounds great at low volumes so you don't have to crank the thing and bother the neighbors, etc. As far as the ProMods I have the white, the orange & the slime green. The necks on those guitars are so comfortable & just dig the vibe of them. Never been too crazy for Vs, just feel awkward to me. Now these Charvel Stars are growing on me so maybe just maybe. Been curious about the KNE stuff so let me know what you think of that body when you get it. Also waiting to check out these new ProMods coming out of Mexico. Terry at Guitars-n-Stuff is now a dealer & waiting for them to arrive. I've heard good things about them and the prices look pretty decent. Terry also started to carry Grover Jackson's new line, the GJ2 stuff. They are awesome! He has a white one with the black pick guard & single hum. Could swap out the pick guard and do a Jake set up on it (well it has a Floyd but you could go for the basic vibe), but since I didn't hit that Mega Millions last night I'll just keep dreaming!

I bought 3 bodies from Mitch at KNE, and his work is very good I'll vouch for him any day, so if youre looking to get into a full on project, he is your man, man lol.
Those ProMods are just awesome, which it seems you agree with me there
I saw those GJ2's and I agree that Rhoads 'Concorde' body is really nice, but I'm not too keen on paying Custom Shop prices for a production guitar imo. If I'm going to be paying that kind of cash it better have everything that I want from a guitar spec wise, and Ive yet to find a guitar that covers all the bases so to speak...
So, I'm guessing that the HT-5 has a Master Volume? That's something that the Marshall Class 5 does not feature, but Voodoo Amps has a mod for that, but that there kind of goes along the same lines as the guitar thing I stated above, meaning that Id be paying for something that doesn't have the specs I really want, so therefore, I'd have to pay out again just to mod it the rest of the way to my liking, hence me almost just going the rackmount route yet again....
With racks, as you know, you're pretty much the guy that specs it out, because essentially you are.
That's one thing that sold me on rackmount stuff years ago, because I can build my rig piece by piece, and if I grow out of something, or what have you, I simply yank that particular unit in favor of something else...
Speaking of racks, did you see the Eleven Rack yet? That thing really piques my interest despite it being all digital and crap, Im a staunch proponent of analog units, because it's just less that can go wrong, but as you are aware, this day and age, most everything is digital it seems...
Another day, another dollar....
On a side note, I talked to Dave @ XLG Guitars, and he is expecting the Jackson Adrian Smiths within the next 4 months or so. He put the order in for those almost 2-1/2 years ago!!! Here this whole time I thought I missed out on them, and Im so glad to hear that was not the case.
They are priced at $2,200 which is borderline Custom Shop pricing, so idk about that one just yet...
Most likely Im going to get one because this is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to own a guitar such as that. It really really sucks being a lefty, you guys really have no idea...
He also put an order in for an ESP-LTD ST-213 Strat with a Floyd, avail in 3tone Sunburst only. I already put my deposit in for that one, so Im committed to that purchase, but if it turns out that I don't like it for whatever reason, it will sell fast because a production lefty Strat with a Floyd is more or less unheard of anymore...Too bad it's a lower end guitar, I think it's around $400 out the door, but it'll make a nice beater for sure.
$400 doesn't buy a lot of guitar these days.
That's one reason I prefer to buy the older guitars, because for example I can jump into say an 87-93 Ibanez RG550 for around $600 that will stand right there beside a $1000 guitar now a days...
Im trying to have him get some ESP Gus G Star bodies, but we're not sure if ESP will play along. ESP and BCRich are kind of weird about what body styles they offer up in lefty.
We were so damn close to having an Ironbird made in a limited run of 6 guitars, but BC backed out at literally the last moment. All 6 were sold before they even hit production too...Go figure....

If I understood Terry correctly those GJ2s are all built to order by just a few guys & Grover. They make a Glendora model (which is what he has in stock) that's around $1500-$1600. In today's world that's not too bad for a "custom" ordered USA piece. The HT5 does have a master volume. I have the older one that doesn't have tone control on the clean channel, the new ones do which is a big plus. Voodoo amps do some pretty awesome mods. Was going to get my ADA MP1 modded but they quit modding that unit. Bummer. The Eleven Rack is pretty cool but THE all in one unit is the Axe FX. Haven't played one myself yet but the clips I've heard are killer & seems like a lot of the big names use it. A bit pricey but it does a ton. Ah still like my Sansamp rack preamps for live stuff. Got a second one for a back up rack for less than $200. Heck yes to that!

I was speaking on the account that I'm a lefty, which has the usual 15%-25% mark up. For you guys, yea its a hell of a deal, but for me, its approaching C/S territory. I guess Id really have to want a GJ2 to justify the price for the lack of options Id want. For example, Im not much for the GJ2 headstock, and I highly doubt he would do the old Jackson headstock. Basically what he offers is nothing that I couldn't get elsewhere. I'm not knocking him in the slightest because he continues to make awesome guitars, and lets face it, without him, we wouldn't have what we do today. He is a pioneer for sure. Im just giving you my perspective coming from a backwards player. LOLold Skool wrote:If I understood Terry correctly those GJ2s are all built to order by just a few guys & Grover. I just saw the BlackStar HT-5th anniv combo unit, which is essentially the same thing, but in a 2x10 chassis. Nice units for sure either way.
Im sort of leaning toward the Marshall Class 5 though to be honest. Aside from the absence of a Master volume, (which can be modded at home, from what I gather), its pretty much what Im looking for.
Theres always an attenuater (sp), or I could drive it with a stomp box as use that as my master volume, and simply dime the amp out.
Id likely swap the tubes to Tung-Sol's and go with a Celestion Greenback or something of that nature.
The SansAmps rule, and heck yea, good score on that 2nd unit for that price!! Would you take $205.00 for it, just for a quick profit on your end?

Good stuff indeed Kenny!
#RokkentoDokken
I agree with you on the GJ2 headstock, not crazy about them either but have seen worse. Didn't know they whacked you that much extra for a lefty. That sucks! As for that 2nd Sansamp if I do unload it & you're interested I'll cut you a real good deal on it dude. I have enough pieces laying around I was going to build another rack but put that on hold since I got this Roadster. Just got a Mini Amp Gizmo so that I can use my TC Nova System to switch channels on the Roadster as I change patches on the Nova System. I'm really big on switching everything at once & not tap dancing on a bunch of pedals. Nothing wrong with pedals & to each his own, some guys pull it off really well. I just like having my effects & amp switched together. The Roadster is a combo so I can go in with just it and a board with the Nova System & a few other pieces. Little less involved than the rack & all. Will always be a rack guy but this combo is pretty nice.

The GJ2 headstock isn't too bad in reverse, and I could live with that if I had to, and yea I have seen worse theres no doubt about that one.
The mark up for a lefty sometimes isn't all that bad, sometimes its worse, but sometimes it's the same price, but a general rule is 15%-25% give or take.
I think its like 1 out of 10 ppl are lefty, and how many of those play guitar, and how many of those play these style of guitars...See what I mean?
The SansAmp would be pretty cool, I haven't tried one yet. It not a biggie though, I was half joking, but yea Id be interested so keep me in mind...
I hear ya on the tap dancing, and it's not for me either, but some guys do it like it's their job or something.
I'll always be a rack guy as well, but it would be nice to have a simple rig for a multitude of reasons, which Im sure you are aware of.
Are you gonna look into grabbing a Charvel Jake when they hit the market? Id really love to cause he is one of my fav players, so Im really hoping I can get one made.
All these limited runs of 6,10,12 guitars at a clip from BCRich,ESP,Dean all sell out really fast, so if that's not reason enough to do atleast 6 of them, then I don't know what...
I personally know a lot of guys who have bought one of each, because we don't know how long they will do these runs for us. Just 3 yrs ago it was virtually un heard of, but Dave at XLG is doing a great job going up to bat for us, so hopefully he changes things for the better....
Have you tried one of those RTM pickups from Seymour yet? I hear they are pretty awesome, so Id like to try one out for myself sometime for sure.
I had an old Seymour JB in my Charvel Jake that I built, but I swapped that out for a mid-90's Seymour Allan Holdsworth pup, which is what Jake used on the Bark at the Moon album. That pickup is a rock n roll rebel to say the least! (sorry I had to..
) Im going to try taking two TB-1 '59B pups to make a hybrid using the screw pole bobbins from each pickup to make what they call a Double Screw '59. Its supposed to be along the same lines as the AH1-B Holdsworth I have... Fairly easy to mod too.
Good times indeed sir!

I'd like to get one of the Jake models but before that one I'd like one of the DeMartini's, either the snakeskin or the blood drip. Going to have to find a deal cause they're way too pricey for me. Haven't tried the RTM yet. Looking to try an Alternative 8 in my ESP. Have a JB in it now which is my fav but in this guitar (mahogany body, maple cap) it sounds thin compared to the alder body Charvels & Jacksons. The Alt 8 seems to have a little more meat in the mids, and a little "more" overall. Oh, and touching on a previous discussion, just read today that Jake took the blame for the poor 1st show saying that he knew they needed more rehearsal time & should have put off any shows til they were ready. He sounds pretty grounded & committed. Be awesome to see some good riffage from him again!

I thought you had the BloodDrip already? I knew you had the Crossed Swords, but for some reason I was thinking you had 2 of his guitars. I like the BloodDrip, but that Skull is kind of cartoon-ish for me. The SnakeSkin is prob the one I like the best though. Either one will be a nice addition to your collection.
The Seymour Alt-8 is an awesome pickup, I had one in my Gunslinger, and it flat out ripped! I swapped it out for a Bill-n-Becky Lawrence L500XL, and in hindsight I should have kept that pickup, but my buddy was on my nuts about trading it to him, which I did. Don't get me wrong, the L500XL is a noteworthy pup in its own right, and in fact it's my fav passive pup without a doubt.
If you haven't tried one yet, let me know because I have 3 'BnB' L500XL's, so I could prob spare one if you're interested. Im confident that you will fall in love with it bro! Actually, I have another L500XL on the way, because I swapped a Seymour JB straight up for it, so there will be 4 of those in my parts box.
As far as passive pups, I have 3 guitars with an L500XL, my Jake Charvel has the Seymour Holdsworth pup, and my 87 USA Warlock has a DiMarzio Super-D/PAFPro combo. (Been really wanting to swap these out, but this guitar is super rare and all original, so Im hesitant to do so...)
The rest of my guitars have EMG-81s w/18v mod. And if I remem correctly I have one guitar with an '85/18v, I'd have to check, to make sure I didn't swap it out for an 81 though....
The Seymour Alternative-8 features an Alnico-8 magnet (which Im sure you knew), and Ive been really digging the Alnico-8 and the Alnico-9 mags, so Im going to order some magnets from Addiction-FX and do some mag swapping here really soon. Some dude online did a pickup shootout, where he'd take a pickup and do sound clips. He'd do a stock or baseline clip, then he'd swap the mag to an Alnico-2,3,4,6,8,9, and Ceramic, Double thick Ceramic, etc....
The one that really caught my ear was a DiMarzio Breed with an Alnico-8 mag. Its so hard to explain how it sounded, but I'll just say that I was very impressed, and now I want to make one!
To go back to Jake; I did not read the interview or statement that you were referencing, but from what you said, it really speaks volumes about him as a person and an artist. He is a professional in every sense of the word, and I truly hope that he has a good year in 2014. Its so awesome that he is back, after being literally off the radar for the last 10-15yrs.
Everyone online is about as stoked about his comeback as me and you are. He is one of the last of the guitar heroes of the 80's. Most everyone from that era has sold out, or they're washed up or dead, so its nice to have him back to show everyone how it's done! Haha
Did you see that George Lynch has a guitar company called MrScary guitars? All the models I saw feature a top that's like his Tiger graphic, but it's carved into the wood, and either stained or burnt, or both.
His prices are out of this world though...He also is making his own pickups which are like $180-ish. Which both of those are just odd because he is, and has been endorsed by ESP and SeymourDuncan since the mid 80s, so it's weird that he feels its necessary to try to top those by doing his own thing. I mean he is entitled to do as he wishes, but Id much rather see him do something different with ESP instead of only having the same 4 or 5 graphics that have been offered since the dawn of time.

Didn't know about Mr Scary Guitars so thanks for telling me about them. Just checked them out. Holy expensive Batman! I mean yeah I'd expect a guitar built by George to be a bit pricey but wow. And before I'd pop for one of those I think I'd get the J Frog skull & bones (or better yet the X-Ray Guitars Bootleg Bones-have you seen these? Look pretty much like the J Frogs, carved and all but less than half the price.). It is weird like you said that George is doing is own stuff while endorsed by others. As far as the Bill Lawrence, I've never tried one before. How does it compare to a JB? I have a couple guitars with a Duncan Custom which seems to work real nice for drop tuning- doesn't get muddy or flubby on the bottom. Also have a Duncan Distortion in my Charvel 750. Went thru several pickups and that one so far seems to be the best although I'm not 100% set on it. Always thought a Distortion would be too hot but in that guitar in works well. I've tried EMGs and liked them for a while, even better with the 18v mod, but after a while they just seemed lifeless to me. Again, to each his own. No right or wrong, just whatever works for ya. I read about that Jake interview on Rig-Talk. The Jake fan boys & haters seem to go with the wind on there ha ha.
