Ed Miller R.I.P.

Post by Jim Price »

The area music scene lost one of its most gifted guitar players on Friday with the unexpected passing of Ed Miller.

From the Huntingdon area, Ed rocked stages with some of the region's best-known rock and metal powerhouses through the years, including Thin Ice, Bashful, and more recently, Scream.

I saw Ed in action plenty of times with the above-mentioned bands, and remember him and his bands at the roots of many fun nights at places like the Hill Valley Hotel, William Penn Inn, old Sabs, the County Line Inn and more. I always enjoyed chatting with him. He will be sorely missed.

Here is one of many photos I took of Ed in action over the years, this during a November 2005 Scream performance at Mount Union's County Line Inn.

I had the honor of sharing the stage with Ed for nearly 4 years with the final incarnation of Scream. Ed was the quiet one of the band. He was devoted to his wife, his family, and loved playing onstage with us. We had many long conversations over a beer while prepping for a show, and spent a lot of time on the road talking about music, life, and all that kind of stuff. Ed gave me a lot of advice that I took to heart, and I was proud to count him among my close friends. A band is like a family, and I was probably closer to Ed than anyone else in the band. He could play those Jacksons like nobody's business, and it was almost funny how many girls wanted to hook up with him, yet he had zero tolerance for that. Total family guy.

I got to see Ed's son, Dylan perform at the Route 22 Rock-N-Blues Festival recently, and can definitely say that Dad is proud. Strait & Miller are a heck of an act, and Dylan has gotten the music bug straight from his dad.

While I didn't know Ed for as long as people like Johnny Stevens or Tood or Jeff Hoover or John Passarelli, being in a band with him was one of the best times of my life. I will deeply miss Ed, and will have a heavy heart over this for a long time.

RIP, Dutch. Godspeed. I miss ya.

If anyone would like to reminisce, I have seven videos of Scream performing out at the Shade Mountain Inn in Middleburg back in 2007 that I have on my personal YouTube page. Quality ain't great, they were shot on a handheld vidcam, but they deserve to be seen. Link is below. Enjoy, and RIP Ed Miller.

:( Sad day in the music world. S.O.S shared the stage with SCREAM on may occasions and I always enjoyed them and Ed's talent. He was an all around great guy who live down the street from me. He will be greatly missed and God Speed to his Family, Friends, Everyone who shared the stage with him, and all the members of Scream. RIP my friend.
