Queensryche

Post by tornandfrayed »

This is kinf of a strange thing happening with this band. Tate was fired but a judge ruled that both parties could continue to use the name until the court date and subsequent ruling. KKind of strange but now we have two Queensryche albums that are both new...

Interesting. I got both of these on vinyl but have not had a chance to listen yet, I will update when I can. Thought it was kind of unique..

Queensryche ain't shit without Tate. In a lot of cases, the singer makes the band and this is definitely one of them. Geoff was playing in Akron last year and I had tickets to go, backstage and everything but we got a hellish snowstorm and I didn't want to make the drive; very unfortunate.

This is even weirder than J. Geils suing the J. Geils Band for touring as the J. Geils Band without J. Geils in it.

I think "Peter and the Wolf" was already a registered trademark haha

As for Queensryche, Chris DeGarmo leaving was a major blow in the first place, but at least Tate was still there. Now that hes gone, the other 3 have alot of audacity trying to carry on. Just my humble opinion of course.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

I definitely cannot fathom a Queensryche without Geoff Tate, and also +1 to the band jumping the shark when DeGarmo left. Two acts touring and releasing albums under the 'ryche name is lame. It reminds me of when there were two versions of LA Guns on tour, and ironically Traci's version was the shitty version.

Great White is also doing the same and I've worked with both singers. The tall guy was the real deal and still sounded like he did on the albums of the 80s; the new, shorter guy is OK, but is just meh IMO.

The only example I can think of that two "bands" touring at the same time playing the same music and have it turn out well is Trans-Siberian Orchestra. But they don't have a figure-head like the other bands mentioned do/did.

Not to take anything away from the rest of that band, they were a big influence for me, but I always associate Queensryche with Tate and DeGarmo. Maybe they should patch things up and run with the name...

Bands that have splits and use the same name for both bands is not only confusing, but stupid. LA Guns, Great White, now Ryche. Out of all of them, the Great White story is the most mind numbing to me. Jack Russell has had issues with addiction for a long time. His bandmates stuck by him and let him try to get better in rehab. He told them he wasn't sure he'd ever come back. Then out of nowhere, he sends a letter to his bandmates through his legal department stating he was coming back to tour, but that the entire band was fired. So Russell hires an entirely new band and the old band hire a new singer (Who is the singer for the obscure 80's hair band XYZ Craven) and roll on. At least with LA Guns, it's Tracii and Steve Riley using the name to piss the other off. They both can legally use the name. And since Riley's version of the band has Phil Lewis, who sung all their more popular songs, they naturally do better. I like Geoff Tate, but he was taking Ryche in a strange musical direction. My hope is that with Todd LaTorre as the singer, it may eventually entice Chris DeGarmo to come back to the band.

Ok, I lestened to both of these albums and I have to say that the Geoff Tate Ryche sounds very poorly produced and the songs sound like they are knock offs, does not sound like a lot thought went into it.

The album with only two origirnal memebers sounds really good and does have a good feel to it. Does not touch Empire but sounds decent..

Either way kind of sad..

Wow, I never even knew about that Great White story. That is indeed strange. And it kinda sucks, too. Great White was one of the unsung heros of blues-based hard rock in the 80s. I always said that the only thing sadder than the band being associated with the club fire is them being associated with that Ian Hunter cover, 'cause their own material kicked ass.

As far as Queensryche...I think I'm one of the only people on this planet who liked Hear in the Now Frontier. I honestly prefer it over Operation: Mind Crime. Please don't taz me for that statement.
