Here is the recap of the July 7 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

We always like guests who log mileage to be on the program. And with that in mind, big thanks to Harrisburg’s Mycenea Worley (www.myceneaworley.com) for traveling in monsoonal conditions to be this week’s guest! Mycenea updated us on her latest happenings, including her new CD, Siren. We checked out songs from the disc, and three lucky listeners called in to win their own copies! Mycenea also strapped on a guitar and played a new song for us live! Along the way, we debuted new songs by Triple A Blues Band and Monster Track Supergroup, updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1994 song by State College’s Dirges from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Eli the Hawk’s Fables in Time CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

On our next program, we will do something a little bit different. Last month, the “Homegrown Rocker” was in attendance at the tenth annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival, which took place at Quiet Oaks Campground north of Renovo. More than 20 different bluegrass, folk and Americana groups and artists showcased their music to benefit the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania. We brought back some audio from Smoked Country Jam, and will share comments from some of the organizers and participants, plus live footage from the festival. We will also review the self-titled CD by one of those groups, Harrisburg’s Colebrook Road, in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” We go “Backstage at Smoked Country Jam” on the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

And the “Homegrown Rocker” is available for digital download off either Rocky website after each and every show. In Local Music News…

Plans are coming together for a live music summer-ending tradition. This year’s annual Kids Come First Benefit: 22nd End of Summer Jam benefit concert for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will take place on Sunday, August 25 at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club. The concert will run from 1 to 10 p.m. Bands confirmed to perform thus far include the Backyard Rockers, Punk Fiction and the Rhythm Sharks, with more bands and performers pending. More details will be available shortly.

Also happening at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Club that same weekend will be the inaugural Pickin’ for Wishes Bluegrass Festival to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation. This show will take place on Saturday, August 24, starting at 12 noon, and will include performances from The Hillbilly Gypsies, Blue Shades, Trains Moonshine & Jesus, Mountain Therapy and Matt Bartin & the Dixie Travelers. Advance tickets are $10, otherwise admission is $15 at the gate.

Next Sunday, July 14, is the Mercury Poisoning Awarness Benefit for Brian Cupples at Altoona’s Bavarian Hall, raising money and awareness for area musician Brian Cupples, who is battling the effects of long term mercury poisoning. The concert begins at 2 p.m., and will feature performances throughout the afternoon and evening from Skye 2.0, The House Band, The Planet Mercury All Star Band, Nashville recording artists Fred Myers and the Redneck Majority, the Backyard Rockers, Debra Demko, Colin Lennox, Pete Caccamo and more. The “Homegrown Rocker” extends speedy get well wishes to Half Tempted singer and guitarist Ron Dalansky. Ron is recovering in a Pittsburgh hospital from injuries suffered during a dirt-bike racing accident last weekend.
