I have had several record deals. Death row, bad boy, Lynch mob, ruthless, g unit, swan song, big vin, electra, mca... The list goes on. I actually just signed to interscope, but priority really wanted me. I just wasnt comfortable with the amount of money they wanted to give me. I mean 20 mill is just too much for yet another solo album.

Oh yea... Just kidding

Youre on a local music forum asking if local groups have record deals? Makes you wonder? Huh??? Are you that slow?? Its a local music forum, not the sonymusic website. Normally, i dont respond to troll questions...but this was a really dumbass one. Coulda be way more witty to say what you wanted to say.

I got a record deal over the summer. Waylon Jennings at a yard sale for a quarter.

This thread is causing me to rethink this whole music thing...

Now that I think of it, I DON'T have a record deal. Therefore, I'm not only worthless as a musician, but I'm doing a disservice to the art world in general. I suppose I should spend much more time trying to be popular and appealing to Corporate America. Then, hopefully, I could feel validated and important when internet weasels ask pseudo-questions that reveal much more about themselves than they intend. Everything that I've done in life so far is for naught because this anonymous porn-junkie asked some grammatically incorrect questions and was too lazy to hit the shift key. I think I'll quit music altogether.

Rockstar, I sincerely apologize for being such an insignificant moron. Please help us.
Oh, please, oh, please, oh, please, oh, please, oh, please, oh, please oh, please

Given the current state of the music business, the availability and global reach of online publishing, and the 'artists' being pushed by major labels (Katy Perry, Kanye West, Nickleback), I think a more appropriate question is:

Does anybody truly WANT a record deal?

Honestly, I don't care one way or the other. I just like to play, and I think I'd rather play dive bars and things like festivals, you know, fun stuff.

all i am saying is if i was as good as all of you i would want more than to just be content to play dive bars and what ever else i could find. I always thought the idea was to go national, shouldn't that be the goal ????

While there are some who share your thought, I'm willing to bet that most of the guys on here are just playing for the pure enjoyment of playing.

Don't get me wrong, if something(like a deal) would come their way, a fair number would definitely entertain the thought. I would.

There are some local/regional people/groups that have gone further with their music. Sometimes it works out, sometimes, not so much. If it's your goal, great. Play every show you can, sell your house for transportation to those shows, and most importantly, DON'T BE A D!CK. You never know who is listening...

Really? You think we play music to become famous? Or do you think some people just do it for the love of the music?

I know you're trolling, but I felt like saying that. We'd prefer you go troll somewhere else...

I've known a few local folk who have had bigger record deals. Unless you're really planning on dedicating 100% of everything you have toward pursuing it, it's most often not worth it. A lot of deals involve taking on a lot of debt before you "make it". If things don't work out, you're stuck with all the debt.

I have a few friends who currently have deals with smaller independent labels. That seems to be a bit more friendly towards the band, but more responsibility must be shouldered by the band to make it work.

Post by Ronnyd »

Played with a few musicians who had deals, they didn't like being told how to look ,or what to wear,or who to sound like like. Try living on a few bucks a day, they didn't like that .Did I mention the money they owed when said deal was lost? Selling your soul means giving up everything and being fed into The Machine! Did I mention my deal couldn't compete with my benefits I got at my 9 to 5 ?Besides ,I liked being home every night .

I don't think I could ever get a record deal. I like to do stuff my way and so do my band mates. We go against the grain. If someone says you're playing it too fast we play it faster. Just how we roll. Bands like Fuck Cherry and Nickelfuck make me vomit. They have talent, they just don't use it. Bands like the Foo Fighters and Green Day, that throw their middle finger up to the corps., get my vote. Gallows advice and words of wisdom are ones to follow. If you want to be a superstar your in the wrong area. Blues On!!!!

Playing the shit gigs, in order to fund the big/fun gigs, seemed to make it worth it for me. I am no longer with a band, but the group I was with up until recently found a way to become successful through hard work, hard gigging, and 0 help from any record company. Personally I feel if you depend on others to do the dirty work for you, then you fail in the end.
Videos destroyed the vitality of rock and roll. Before that, music said, "Listen to me." Now it says, "Look at me."

Wow very strong statement. How do I event respond????

Music is not my career. It is my hobby. So no it is not my goal to go national. I have Ph.D. in computer science and some other degrees that nobody here would care about. I wouldn't want to take a pay cut and be a professional musician. I happen to have a very happy life playing music as a hobby. I have a family and a big house and a great career. All I'm missing is the white picket fence. I have a job for life as a professor and I am a lead software developer for the largest and best concert touring company in the world, Clair Brothers. I get the privilege of working directly with world class musicians and industry leaders including promoters, road crew, managers, staging companies, lighting, companies, gear companies, etc. I could go on and on. My point is the **** LIFE IS NOT THAT BAD PLAYING MUSIC AS A HOBBY ******

I think its kind of offensive that you imply that it is a bad thing to play in "dive" bars. What's wrong with that if it makes you happy?

You also imply that the presence of lack of a record deal signifies your quality as a musician. We all know that there are some talented musicians with record deals. There are also some bad or mediocre musicians that do indeed have record deals. We all know that there is some luck involved in getting a record deal. In addition to luck, you have to consider politics, nepotism, etc. It is a very big risk to commit your life to getting a record deal. Maybe my fellow rock page musicians simply do not want to take such a risk. From a talent perspective, I know that there are local musicians tat can play circles around some of the "professional" musicians with record deals.

I could go on but that's my 2 cents.

Although on the bright side it was nice seeing almost 24 hours go by without an RIP post on rockpage.

I haven't seen anyone on here espousing their "greatness" I have seen people share they work that they take a great deal of pride in. And who in the world says being a national , career musician is the ultimate goal. I realized my life's dream. I worked for it, got my foot in the door and achieved what I set out to do . I love "MY" career and I'm happy with my place in this world. Can you say the same for yourself.

No. You thought wrong. I would turn down any attempts at a major-label recording contract, because I don't want to be an employee of a corporation whose main product is something I create in the first place.
It's the internet age, there's nothing they can do, that I can't do myself, and I still maintain all my rights to what I create.

I been around the local music scene pretty much all my life, and I know most of the people who play out. I can say that a couple of them were at one time or another offered a record deal but turned it down because they either, A: Liked the local scene too much, and/or B: Felt that their families were more important.

Just because someone on here doesn't have a record deal doesn't makes them any less cool, or unworthy of it. Which I know for fact that most of these guys would be very successful at it. These guys are some of the best musicians I have ever heard.

i want to thank all who gave me their opinion on this and i thank you some were right on point and others not so good but thanks anyways, now as for me if i had the chance to leave this area and go big i would in a heart beat i have read most of the post on here about how the music scene in this area is either dying or dead and yet you stay? i understand why and that's why i asked the question, but for me "its dream big and live the life!" if i had the chance.
