Instrumental Guitar Tune
Instrumental Guitar Tune
Picked up a Tascam DP-24 digital recorder a few months ago & really dig this thing. I have a ton to learn about it yet as well as recording in general but having a blast with it. Did a couple Christmas tunes back in December with it & just finished recording a little instrumental tune. Nothing technical or flashy, just a jam over a simple groove. The name of the tune is "Drive". When you have a chance check it out. Thanks!

Thanks! All the guitar tracks were recorded using a Blackstar HT-5. For such a small, lower priced amp that thing sounds pretty decent & you can get a bunch of different tones out of it, very "tweakable". Ran it mostly through a Mesa 4x12 Recto cab but also did a couple tracks through a Mesa 1x12 Recto (all with Vinatge 30s). It also sounds good through the stock 10" cab that's in the combo, I just like the tone through the Vintage 30s a little better.

I love the Blackstar stuff. I've played through a couple of HT-50s and a couple of Series Ones, but I've never tried the HT-5s. Sometimes cranking up a small wattage amp is just the tonal ticket. I've found that Vintage 30s are very good sounding in that application.
Having said all that, kudos for getting such a good tone on a recording. Even fantastic tones can sound flat and lifeless if the miking isn't right or the mix doesn't agree with all the tones of the individual tracks.
Thank You! Keep sharing!

I was kind of surprised to find that I actually got a better tone at lower to mid volume than cranking it up. I messed around with placement of the SM-57 until I found what I liked & the EQ on the recorder was pretty much flat. I think that helps when you don't have to try to compensate for tone after the amp. I have a ton of ideas, just have to find the time to record them. Also going to look into something like a Tube Screamer, OCD, etc to push that Blackstar for some heavier stuff. Have heard some clips with those pedals & even the Bad Monkey & they sound pretty good with that amp.

Hey thanks everybody! Greg, that's a Dime Crybaby from Hell. I love that wah. It's got a ton of tweakability to it, which is good & bad. Sometimes I find myself tweaking & tweaking only to end up where I started. Duh! I used a TC G-Force for a little delay on that "lead" tone & it really helped round off & polish the tone of the wah. And yes Bobby, an Engl would be sweet. I'm pretty happy with what that Blackstar did but I know what that Engl can do & those are the tones I'd really like to get.

Good stuff Kenny, had that early Satriani feel to it. I've been looking at 5 watt amps lately but i've been playing a little cleaner lately and not sure about the blackstar. Was checking out some custom builder but no way to try em out.
Don't bitch to me about the economy while you're still buying Chinese products.

I was always really impressed with the clean tones that old sKool got out of that Blackstar, very chimey and Vox-like. It's almost hard to believe that it's powered by a single 12AX7.
I'm surprised Dave P. hasn't stopped by yet. He's one of the biggest Blackstar nuts (nut in a good way) that I know!

Thanks Tony. That Blackstar does clean stuff pretty decent but to me sounds just a little on the thin side, but that could just be my guitar/pickup arrangement. It does a really nice clean with some grit (think Pink Floyd). I have an idea for a tune with a Floyd vibe to it that I hope to record soon & will be using that amp. I hear you though about wanting to check out amps but can't find them within a reasonable drive. For 5 watts the Blackstar will crank & I've used it at a few gigs with good monitor support. The drawback for me is that I really like to feel my amp & not just hear it & the 5 watts just won't cover that. On the plus side it was nice to carry such a small rig, my back approved muchly!

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone that has checked out the tune & my page! Muchly appreciated. Hope to have another song together here very soon. Picked up an MXL V63 mic for recording the acoutic & really like the way it sounds.
