HOMEGROWN ROCKER 1/27/13 (INSTRUMENTS DO THE TALKING)

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 27 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

With many people in our region presently battling some sort of throat bug, we at the “Homegrown Rocker” decided to give the voices the week off this week, and spotlight instrumental works by area bands and artists in our first-ever “Instruments Do the Talking” Special! We explored the instrumental realm of local music, and featured voiceless recordings and performances in a variety of styles! Along the way, we updated “Local Music News,” dug a 2001 live instrumental song by The Flame Sky from the archive for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed Wine Of Nails’ WONk Thyself CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

WIDE OPEN – “Eat My Dust”
SYNESTHESIA – “Effigy of the Forgotten”
PROJECT TWELVE(34) – “Terminal Torque”
ZUPE & NICHOLS – “Caterpillar”
RIK GOLDEN – “Cresson Gutter Bums”
TED McCLOSKEY – “Ghost Town Trail”
CLINT CAROTHERS & FRIENDS – “Mr. J”
JOHN “JT” THOMPSON – “Down at Daniel’s”
SUZI BROWN – “How the West Was Won”
RICH EDMUNDSON – “Percussive Guitar” (performed live on air 4/11/10)
THE BADLEES – “Grill the Sucker”
CHARLES MARCIANO – “Rocky Grass Blues”
MARTY RAKACZEWSKI – “Freight Train”

HOUR TWO:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Travelers Not Forgotten”
STERLING KOCH – “Taylor’s Rock”
DON HUGHES – “Go For Broke”
WINE OF NAILS – “Persia Primitive”
THE ARTS – “Cosmic Dust”
THE FLAME SKY – “Dragon” (live) (2001, Local Music Flashback)
COINMONSTER – “Anywhere on the Earth”
BLOODY FINGERS – “Rock 101”

On our next program, since we are aware of some sort of football game going on, we will present the annual installment of the “Football Widows Special,” and place the spotlight on the women of local and regional music! We will hear from the ladies who sing, play guitars, basses, drums and other instruments on the area music scene! We will also update “Local Music News,” dig a female-performed song from the archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Sucker’s On My Love CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” The ladies of local and regional music take the spotlight on the “Homegrown Rocker” next Sunday night!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 10 – RON RUSSELL TALENT SHOWCASE
FEB. 24 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL
MAR. 3 – 15TH ANNIV. SPECIAL/MILLENNIUM CONTEST WINNER
MAR. 10 – BRAND NEW WINGS

In Local Music News…

Rising Philadelphia favorites The Next announced the end of their one-year run on Northeastern stages effective at the end of this month as members move on to new endeavors. Singer and former American Idol contestant Tyler Grady is moving on to solo career work, while the rest of the group has enlisted former Steamroller Picnic frontman Paul Mullay to form a new project called Alien Arcade. The Next’s official last show happened last night at Altoona’s 4D’s Lounge.

Drummer Steve Arnold has announced that he will be leaving State College favorites The Nightcrawlers later this spring and hanging up his drumsticks to start a family; the group is currently seeking a new drummer.

Steve and the Nightcrawlers will be one of several performers involved in a benefit show this Monday night, January 28, at Zeno’s in State College to help out a former Zeno’s staffer seriously impacted by Hurricane Sandy. “Benefit for a Friend” will start at 6 p.m., and proceeds will help out Dave Burkett, a New Jersey resident who lost nearly everything from flooding caused by Hurricane Sandy’s wrath up the East Coast in October. Donation at the door will be $3, and 14 different State College businesses have donated items for an auction to help raise more funds. Bands and artists performing during the benefit include The Nightcrawlers, Erin Condo, Harold Taddy with Jon Spearly, Biscuit Jam, Pure Cane Sugar, and Ted McCloskey & the Hi Fi’s.
