HOMEGROWN ROCKER 11/11/12

Post by Jim Price »

Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the November 11 edition of Rocky 104.9 and Rocky 99's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 9 to 11 PM during Steelers football season on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com) and WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com).

We packed maximum local and regional music into this week’s two hours! We unloaded the “Homegrown Rocker” mailboxes to check out new recordings that have arrived recently, and debuted a number of new songs! We gave first airplay to new stuff from Painted By Millions, Fist Fight in the Parking Lot, Brian Xander, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, Mike Pilgermayer, Mama Corn, Identity X and Rigel. We also updated “Local Music News,” dug a 1987 song by Lyssa from the archive for this week’s “Local Music Flashback,” and stepped “Across State Lines” to hear music from Presque Isle, Maine-based electronica/rock duo Crunk Witch! And we reviewed not one, but two new local/regional CD’s in “The Professor’s CD Corner” this week, examining Jonah Whale’s Belly of the Beast during the first hour, and Jason O’s In My Bones in the second hour. It was a jam-packed show!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

WITHOUT ZERB – “Fly Away”
THE HOPE FALLACY – “Up All Night”
PAINTED BY MILLIONS – “Come Along”

CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Shine” (acoustic)

In Local Music News…

Ganister has found their new singer to replace Ken Gray, who departed the group in late summer. Tony Irvine, whose resume includes singing duties for Torque and Scapegoat, assumes the lead microphone position. Tony made his official debut with the group this past weekend during a show at Madhatters in St. Boniface.

Former Like A Movie frontman Jimmy Mowery has completed work on his first solo recording, and will be playing his first Altoona area appearance in a year to celebrate the EP’s release. That CD release show will happen on Tuesday night, November 20, at The Island in Altoona starting at 10 p.m.

The Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble will host an interactive drum circle event this Monday night, November 12, at the Hollidaysburg YMCA. The event is a benefit for the Altoona Symphony. Directed by former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan, the Drumming Ensemble welcomes the public to join in the drum circle. The event starts at 7 p.m., and donation at the door is $10.

The 13th annual Night of Rock, Rhythm & Blues Benefit concert will happen on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 21 at Ace’s Lounge in Johnstown, to raise funds for the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic. The show will begin at 7 p.m., and feature performances from opening group the Stone Bridge Blues Band, and headliners The Billy Price Band. Advance tickets are $10 and available at Ace’s Lounge and the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic. Donation at the door the night of the show will be $15.

Three nights later, on Saturday, November 24, Ace’s will host the second annual Tunes for Tails benefit concert for the Humane Society of Cambria County. That show will begin at 7 p.m., and will feature performances from the Southside Strays, Whiskey River Panhandlers, Tree and Blue Collar Fate. Donation at the door will be $10.

And on a sad note, area music fans who used to frequent Peter C’s in Altoona are mourning the passing of Dave Kenawell, the venue’s longtime former doorman. Dave, nicknamed “RePete,” passed away on Friday morning at the age of 52. He was also a former cub scout leader and volunteer fireman. We at the “Homegrown Rocker” offer our heartfelt condolences to Dave’s family and friends.
