Did you ever wonder why people who play drums are called drummers ? Why aren't they called drummists ?

But if they play multiple percussion instruments they are called percussionists instead of percussioners ?

Why aren't singers called singists ?

Why aren't guitar players guitarers ?

Why aren't keyboard players called keyboarders ?

Pianists Pianoers ?

Bassists bassers ?

Me either... But I'm a drummist for one group and a percussioner for another. WAIT...why am I the only one laughing... Never mind.

Personally, I use certain terms as a show of respect for the musician in question. I know quite a lot of people who play guitar, but very few guitarists. For me, the "ist" denotes study and discipline, not just the ability to monkey a song out of an instrument. I suppose, then, I should refer to some people as "drummists"; those who are masters of that instrument, whereas a "percussionist" would be someone who is skilled in the various percussion instruments (in orchestral terms, this includes guitar and piano). Let's face it, "drummer" is just easier to say than "drummist".
