Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What the hell happened ?

You guys are right, and I have seen a lot of signs to show, and have strongly felt for a long time that we are in for some crazy sh*t in our lifetimes.

People get lazy and use up social services and shit like that, thus more taxes are created by wimpy politicians to pay for these people and in turn get the vote from these leaches on society....wow, that was pretty harsh....This nation used to be about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps...now it's about holding on to other's bootstraps. This isn't the case on all taxes, but it's not helping with the current situation.

It sucks when people say "cut taxes" and don't say what specifically what they want to stop funding. Very Specifically!

Don't say something general like welfare. Because there are some who legitimately need it. And welfare fraud is a drop in the ocean of the national debt.

If you think any politician is going to take a cut in pay or benefits you're crazy.

They found it in their good hearts to cut veterns benefits. How about we close the local VA. (It won't be long.) Or close the local "green monster" where people who needed personal care were. They cut funding to farmers.

Please do it this way. Tell us exactly what should be cut out, then tell us exactly how much that will save the government. Then how much that in turn will save you in taxes. If you do that I will listen to you.

And it's not true things were good 100 years ago when there were no taxes. Are you suggesting the government should never have built any roads. No Army, Navy Airforce etc. etc. etc. .

And I remember from middle school history , somthing about the government being bankrupt and having to borrow heavily from one of the rialroad magnates . He was richer than the US government and if he said "no" we would have been screwed.

Here's an idea. Lets let people who make their money in stocks stop paying taxes on that income altogether. You see , they say it's not income because they arn't working for it. Guess what, the US government has already thought of this. I haven't followed it for awhile so maybe they already passed it into law.

And why do people vote for the political party that says "We want to get government out of your lives " . Then they turn around and make the government more and more intrusive.

Wow, Sorry, I got carried away.

Do you think we'd be back in the black and out of the red zone if we started doing things like we did, back in the day? Go back to bartering and trade. Using our technology to have better crops and not be buying from other places lest we need it... that sort of thing. I mean, I know it would never happen, we're too dependent on german beer, china technology, parisian water, taiwan clothing, canadian medicine, british tea... etc.
It would be awesome if we all went on a gas strike...ended up buying a whole bunch of horses, starting the "Rock Page Ranch"...just starting to do things like we did, back in the day...maybe even getting our dollar to go back up to it's worth. And...oh yeah... start making the people that are milking the system for unemployment and welfare that DON'T need it...make them get their lazy arses off the couch and get a job. Cuz I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I want my S.S.I. when I'm old.

Yeah, now yer getting it!!!!

The Federal government is painfully inept at anything except:

1. Wasting tax money.
2. Blowing things up and killing people.

They used to be good at taxing, but they even managed to screw that up with the present confusing and maddening personal income tax code. They should remember to kiss us when they screw us.

And the economy? The scariest thing you can do is let the Federal government mess with the economy. President Reagan's elaboration on this subject is sooooo true:

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidise it"
...Oh, the freedom of the day that yielded to no rule or time...

I remembered seeing this posted on Juan Croucier's message board last year. It's fitting and pretty true.

An old Indian chief sat in his hut on the reservation, smoking a ceremonial pipe and eyeing two U.S. government officials sent to interview him.
"Chief Two Eagles" asked one official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government officials for over a minute and then calmly replied. "When white man found the land, Indians were running it. No taxes. No debt. Plenty buffalo. Plenty beaver. Women did all the work. Medicine man free. Indian man spent all day hunting and fishing. All night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled ...
"Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."
The person below me enjoys a good spanking.
