Saw some bands

Post by Jasaoke »

I don't get many opportunities to check out other bands (job, kids, my own band) but this summer, we got to play several multi-band functions and I caught a few other sets, as well. I thought I'd give some props:

*This is, in no way, meant to slight, insult, or detract from anyone. These are just some acts that impressed me:

I finally got to see D.D. and the Pub Crawlers and they were AWESOME! I admit I'm partial to horns, and I love how they fill out a sound, especially with the female vocalist. The put on a tight ska/punk set that made it impossible to keep still.

At the same event I saw On The Run. These guys had some of the tightest execution I have ever seen. Very high energy and their singer is very talented.

We got to play a show with the Sitch, as well. Their singer is an absolute chameleon! He could pull of the glitzy highs of Vince Neil and the gutteral growl of Gavin Rossdale. Halfway through a set, one guitarist grabs the bass, and the bassist, yeah dude, that's a saxaphone. (love them horns). Plus, they have one of the coolest drum kits I've ever seen.

I also caught a set from Shake Shake Shake. They were playing to a large crowd of tables and chairs, but still put on an intense show full of life and energy. The did a neat mashup medley that I loved, but then they launched into "When I Come Around"... ehh

So, how 'bout you?

I went and saw Locked and Loaded a few weeks ago. I used to play in a band with Dan years ago, so I wanted to see what he was up to. Dan's singing was probably the best I've ever heard it, and their guitarist, Brad, smokes.

Also got to play a gig with one of old sKool's friends, Barry Little, this past summer. Barry's probably one of the best guitarists around that nobody's heard. He can nail everything from Brad Paisely to Yngwie. Plus, he had about 193 Diezel cabinets up on stage with him that day. Haha!
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.

Most of the bands I've seen this summer have been ones you already know are good (Hurricanes, Flight 19, CV and Stanley Street, Zerb, etc.), but here are a few that stuck in my head:

The Felons - Surprisingly soulful for a young-dudes-playing-loud-modern-rock band. It's not just heavy and fast, they've got some feel.

Rhythm Sharks - What struck me about them is that they played close together on stage like a team instead of everybody roaming the landscape like a T Rex. Blues is a genre where it's tempting for everybody to play in a self-indulgent, look-at-me fashion. They don't.

K Band - Tight musicianship, great sound, absolute fearlessness. The quality of the vocals is unpredictable from song to song though.

I didn't get out as often as I would have liked, but I did catch a few shows. Two local acts really impressed me. One was Black Sun. The recent addition of Todd McKeone on vocals combined with the amazing talent of the rest of the band has made them a definite favorite of mine.

The other act that I fell in love with this summer is The Rhythm Sharks. I can not wait to see them more and more often. Im excited to see them grow. I simply cant praise them enough.

I have heard great things about the band Pistol Peg and the Beer Kegs. They have been drawing very large crowds and I have heard that they are a great party band. I am not a fan of much country, but I have heard other non country fans say that this band is just awesome. I cant wait to catch them soon!

I got to see some new bands recently. Mainly at the Kids Come First benefit

Emberstitch. I really loved the vocals and the band was tight. Song selection was pretty cool too. Put on a great show. I look forward to seeing them again!

Rain Must Fall, what can i say. They freaking blew me away. Great original material, the band was into it. Got the crowd going. Class act all around. Their new cd is freakin awesome. I can't wait to see where this band goes.

Locked and Loaded. What a group of guys! i love their sound, Dan has a great voice and Brad on lead is awesome (what a guitar player!). Their song selection is great. I've known these guys for a while, every time i see them they get better.

Well, I needed a catchy phrase for juxtaposition. I have a hard time remembering who played what, but I remembered that they played a Bush song...

You get the idea

THANKS!!! You guys were ... As Always... awesome as well. KBand is by far one of a kind. And anyone who can play Hanson on the fly scares me.

good times.

Thanks Kayla! Although I personally missed your set, I've heard nothing but great things about The Rhythm Sharks. Looking forward to you guys opening up for us at Aldo's in October and seeing it for my first time.

I'm going to go on to say Locked and Loaded had a great set of rock'n'roll that was perfect for the vibe that evening.

Due to time constraints I was only there for Locked and Loaded, and our own set. I really regret not going up sooner!

My favorite band of the past year though has been LIE's INC. Lie's Inc is/was an incredible band with incredible original material and a cover of "Heart" that would blow your mind.

I always had a thing for frontwomen, and Lily Taylor has some of the best pipes I've heard. Having said that, the MUSICALITY was also there, and the musicianship was as sharp as a knife. Above all though, I look for bands with the ability to write catchy original material - and Lie's Inc did just that.

Hoping they found/or will find a replacement guitarist soon.

OH YEAH - and if you're on facebook, go check out Burden My Surrender. We in Rain Must Fall played with them up in Tioga County at The Beam House and now they're booked with us for November 10th. Their singer will blow your mind. They're a band to keep an eye on as well. Total utter talent, ya know?

Saw a band this past Thursday that was superb. It was perfection all the way, They didn't move around on stage much and they talked a lot between each song but it was an amazing show. They are also the oldest musical group in the US....

"The Presidents Own" Marine Band was in Hollidaysburg and I was lucky enough to have a buddy call me up with an extra ticket last minute. I was really impressed. The saxophones in the Bing Crosby tunes they played were my favorite.
