I was never a Dead fan until I started playing their music. They used the standard chords everyone else uses, just not in the way people normally use them. You're sitting on G, and it feels like the next chord is C, but no, it's implied, and you stay on G for another measure, then a quick D and back to G. If you're not accustomed to it, you're like "What just happened?"
There's no doubt about Jerry's abilities and taste in covers, but I'm a Haggard fan, and nobody will ever top Merle's original version of Mama Tried. Roy Nichols' guitar intro is classic, and Merle's lyric about rebellion and a life wasted will ring true as long as young men do wrong. Props to Jerry for recognizing, though. He had excellent taste in bluegras, too, and right now, through Old & In The Way, is probably the most influential artist in bluegrass. All the major jamgrass (the most popular form of the genre right now) artists are heavily influenced by O & ITW. A popular traditional BG festival will draw 1000 people, tops. Delfest draws 10 times that, and believe me, they're mostly all hippies. I'm not complaining. Whatever road you take to get to bluegrass is okay by me, as long as you get there.

Jerry is, IMO, one of the most underrated songwriters in the history of rock 'n roll. Plus, the fidelity of their studio recordings is incredible, especially considering the time period.
"He's the electric horseman, you better back off!" - old sKool making a reference to the culturally relevant 1979 film.
Re: Woodstock
Not too bad considering it was raining and ruining their equipment, and actually gave Jerry quite a shock. I thought they tried to prevent any recording of their Woodstock performance from getting out.Mysterytrain wrote:Mama Tried - Grateful Dead Woodstock August 16, 1969

I found a lot of cool Merle Haggard and Hank Williams from reading Grateful Dead song credits. LOL.
