Any songwriting activists out there?

Post by Jim Price »

I mentioned this on my latest "Homegrown Rocker" recap thread, and am helping Jerry Zolten get the word out about this. It's a unique contest for any songwriters with songs of a social commentary or activism angle. This is tied in with the upcoming "Woody at 100" celebration at Penn State in early September, commemorating the 100th birthday of renowned songwriter Woody Guthrie. Here are the details as I reported them on the "Homegrown Rocker":

Area songwriters with songs about activism and social change are invited to submit their creations for a chance to perform at the upcoming Woody Guthrie Celebration Concert at State College’s State Theatre. Part of the Woody At 100 celebration, the contest is being conducted by Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary. Song submissions will be reviewed during the “Stand Up & Sing” seminar on Thursday evening, September 6 at Penn State’s Foster Auditorium. The top reviewed artist wins a spot at the following night's Woody Guthrie Celebration Concert featuring Stookey, Si Khan and other national artists at The State Theatre. The deadline for entries is August 29. Entrants need to submit a link to the track or mp3 of the song, their name, phone number, email address, and 250-word biography about themselves. Entries should be emailed to contest@music2life.org.

Also, Jerry informed me that the song entries don't have to be in the "folk" genre; submissions can be rock, rap, punk, or any genre.

Believe it or not, I've never written a single political song, ever. I have one stewing called, "As Long As You Check With Me," but even that one's far from finished. Chris Vipond should get in on this.
