Readers Poll - Top 10 Prog Albums of all time Rolling Stone

Post by Hawk »

Wow, I'm in Heaven !

Drummer Bill Bruford played with three of these bands.

The article:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictu ... e-20120725

10. Rush - Moving Pictures
9. King Crimson - Red
8. Rush - 'Hemispheres'
7. Genesis - 'Selling England By the Pound'
6. King Crimson - 'In the Court of the Crimson King'
5. Genesis, 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'
4. Pink Floyd - 'Dark Side of the Moon'
3. Yes - 'Close to the Edge'
2. Rush - '2112'
1. Dream Theater - 'Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory'

I'm surprised Mahavishnu Orchestra isn't in there.
Dream Theater dominated the polls.
Also surprised Yes' "Fragile" wasn't in there.

They should have listed the Top 25 from the poll.

I was also surprised no Fragile by Yes, no Gentle Giant, no Jethro Tull, no Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, and many other great prog groups.

I agree, but is Jethro Tull progressive, or just a folk-rock fusion band?

I have seen Jethro Tull listed as both. I guess it's who you ask.

Hey, remember when The Grammy Awards considered them as heavy metal and gave them a Grammy? Now, that was a bit of a stretch.

Even the band laughed at that when they won.

In the Court of the Crimson King was the first prog rock I ever heard. Schizoid Man blew me away, it was so foreign to my 1960s top 40 ears but I knew it was special !

By the way, Greg Lake of Emerson Lake and Palmer was the singer on that King Crimson album.

I don't think that Mahavishnu was ever considered rock. I've always thought of them as a jazz fusion band. But then again, any list that comes from Rolling Stone is usually pretty stupid. That mag represents everything that is wrong with music.

Yeah, a couple of more Pink Floyd cd's, some Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Yes would have made it awesome. So yeah, they should expand it to the top 25.

That was funny when Jethro Tull won the Grammy. All the hype was that Metallica was going to win. I liked the next year when Metallica did win and Lars said: "The first thing I would like to do is thank Jethro Tull for not releasing a new album this year"...

I also agree that Jethro Tull isn't really a progressive band.

What about Porcupine Tree though?

How about Focus:

Mike Oldfield and Tubular Bells:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaygITgll80

I think these are better albums than any of the Genesis albums that made the list.

Selling England by the Pound is amopng myu nfavorite albums. I think it should be on there. Not so sure about "Lamb" though.

I do think Jethro Tull is mostly a progressive rock band.

Focus would have been a good adsdition. Bur it is a readers poll and there are a lot of people who don't know who Focus is,

One of my all time favorite progressive bands is U.K. Their 1st album is a classic with singer/bassist John Wetton (formerly of King Crimson, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry's band and Uriah Heep), keyboardist/electric violinist Eddie Jobson (formerly of Curved Air, Roxy Music and Frank Zappa's band), guitarist Allan Holdsworth (formerly of Tempest, Soft Machine, The New Tony Williams Lifetime and Gong) and drummer Bill Bruford (formerly of Yes and King Crimson).

U.K. - In the Dead of Night

The Moody Blues progressive? They are a fantastic band, but I don't know if I would call them progressive. Unless I am missing something?

I guess its all a judgment call. At the time, they and the Beatles were considered progressing beyond the 3 minute love song.

I think they could have easily put Images and Words in there too. Dream Theater is totally unreal.

10's not much of a list, but...

Ya, I consider Tull and Moodys Prog, certainly. ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery" not on there? Kind of nullifies any validity.

I could see Kansas being on there, possibly Utopia. Marillion ABSOLUTELY should be on there. Not sure who ya'd remove, but...

Dream Theater...not a fan at all, but guess they're "prog"...but no way it'd be the top of the list.
